@@jeanlasting5467 No, get a real pet. These lizards are wild animals and shouldn’t be kept in captivity. What’s worse, people often buy them then realize they’re too big/temperamental to handle and release them into the wild where they wreak havoc. If you insist on having one then it should be kept in a custom built enclosure in lots of space, ie, not in DC. But, as someone who has worked with snakes/reptiles before, my best advice is to get over your “exotic pet” fascination. They aren’t meant to be captive and keeping them that way is unhealthy and dangerous (for the animal, for you, and for others). If you have a desire to work with such creatures then there are ways that don’t involve keeping it as a pet (because it isn’t one). Exotic pet people are the reason we have pythons ruining the Everglades.

Talking about nile monitors and shows a video of a black throat? Well Niles in the wild usually only reach 2-3ft but may not be including tail, opposed to the idea that they reach 8ft? In captivity, yes but even that's rare.

The media do make me laugh, first show a picture of a different, second clip they showed a black throat ether are nile monitor it's just stupidly funny
@alexcrowder16738 жыл бұрын
I work at a reptile shop aswell as raise Niles at home. They actually get the same size in captivity and in the wild, which is generally 6ft. No recorded nile has ever reached a full 8ft, although, there is a lake in Africa where niles grow much larger than normal. They are still nile monitors but they are genetically larger than normal niles. The largest nile from that lake topped out at 7'11" making it the largest nile ever recorded. However captive niles are not imported from this location so captive niles almost never grow longer than 7ft and anything over 6.5ft is extremely rare. My huge male will probably get to about 6.5ft but he's an absolute monster. He's easily twice the size of other niles his age. He was already 4ft by the time he was 9 months old. He's currently 5+ft and still growing. You can find his videos on my channel. He's pottytrained, comes when I call him by name etc. They are actually incredibly smart.
@infamousgamer2898 жыл бұрын
not every Nile monitor gets to eat like the next, like if you see a video of a rescued Nile monitor that hasn't been fed like it should, more than likely even after its cared for it will not reach to the size of something like your monitor; if a monitor lizard eats better in the wild than in captivity somethings wrong :p, the point is some Niles in the wild never get to reach its max potential due to lack of food where others are able to eat better, they will also grow larger but that's basic.
@infamousgamer2898 жыл бұрын

Raised him from baby 21” to 6’ in about 5 yrs. had him for 15 yrs. painful loss. Yes, somewhat potty trained. He lived in my detached garage, no cage, when he was full grown. Scratched at the door to go out, same to come in when the sun dropped. Too much. Awesome. And very, very smart.

Own two Niles male and female both tame, leash broke and respond to their names, I swim with them as well. So for all you idiots out there who know nothing about Nile Monitors save the rest of mankind your petty bullshit that you have read or heard. Niles are naturally aggressive but really which reptiles aren't? If you've owned a Nile and couldn't handle it enough to tame than your just a ill advised pet owner that didn't understand the reptile. Their highly intelligent and take alot in unlike a dog you have to start slow and build trust with them talk to them so they familiarize themselves with your voice. And hand feeding is a must for taming and better to feed deli meat or dead food to reduce their aggression. In their youth being bit is an eventuality with Niles it will happen sooner or later.
@alexcrowder16738 жыл бұрын
I agree, I've got a Nile as well and the news is giving them a ridiculous reputation. I've been lucky enough not to be bitten but my Niles an oddball. I've been bitten by other monitors but oddly enough he's never even tried. He's a 4ft Male just barely 10 months old.

I think its funny that theyve only caught 20 in over a year... I bet over half of those "Niles" that they caught werent even actual Niles. I mean this whole video is just one misidentification after another. Do the people at florida fish and wildlife even have any training with monitors? It sure doesnt seem like it.... How do they expect to erradicate the species killing 20 per year anyways? A single large female Nile lays about 60 eggs at a time. 20 captures a year just isnt going to cut it..... Something tells me the Niles in florida arent leaving anytime soon haha. I guess north america finally has monitor lizards for good.

I live in the desert, but the surrounding forests have taken a big toll from Bark Beetles. I've never been to the swamp but I would hate to see anything happen to our forests here in Arizona. As for the desert itself, aside from plants and some insects, this is an ideal place to live if you have exotic pets. I can't name one invasive animal that survives in the desert.

Correct, BUT baby Nile Monitors are cheap and the people who buy them have no idea what they're getting into. It'd be nice if there were other qualifications to owning any kind of pet rather than a valid credit card......
@ColinS892 жыл бұрын
Lol stfu. Dogs have evolved over millions of years with close contact with men. Lizards/snakes/spiders/etc haven’t, it’s just a simple fact. Maybe there is some universe out there where lizards are man’s best friend, but it isn’t this one, and pretending it is is harmful in numerous ways. It harms the environment, it can harm normal peoples real pets, and it can harm other people. If there was some sort of licensure or training program as a prerequisite to buying these pets, then that’d be a different story. However, atm, anybody in denial or with a “desperate to be different” mentality can own one with no regard to how it can effect the world around them. If you’re so desperate to be different then dye your hair blue or something, leave the dangerous animals to the experts.
