Storms like this used to unnerve me when I was on an oil platform in the North Sea, and could feel it shaking, let alone in a boat. I once got caught in rough conditions in a 13ft speedboat off the coast of Greece, on half power with a blocked carburettor and no bilge pump. It was a lesson I will never forget. I pray for the safety of everyone caught up in this hurricane, and for the fortitude to recover soon from the damages.

@@howlinhog I haven’t experienced Lake Superior in a storm but it sounds pretty grim. I remember those colossal waves in the North Sea, I was sent to the top of the drilling rig derrick with a grease gun once in a storm, even with a safety harness it was scary stuff. I think it's safe to say that most of the larger yachts going out were probably making there way out of the path to calmer waters till the storm passed then would come back alot of these larger boats would be safer at sea than tied up and tossed around like bath toys inland where the storm surge would most likely push it on land then capsize it or severely damage the hull

i am a native hawaiian and son of our islands. we seriously learn to swim before we can walk and treat the ocean as our personal playground and most of its dangers (like giant sharks) as possibly annoying and probably amusing. fishing and fish are not just a way of life and staple for us, they're practically religons... we have an ancient saying among my people that roughly translates as, "dont go fishing in a hurricane moron."

When I was in the Coast Guard when big storms were imminent we always headed out to sea because it was safer riding out the storms at sea than it was keeping tied to the dock. At sea there are no docks, piers, pier pilings, bulkheads etc to get your ship smashed against, true sometimes hitting some waves head on it felt like we were hitting solid objects, but in fact they weren't.

Interesting. That makes sense. I’m from California. I always wondered what happens to larger boats with a ton of windage when winds are over 100 knots at the dock. Even smaller boats too though. Knowing hurricanes are fairly regular occurrence in these places how does anyone keep a boat, especially a sailboat? Do they have to take the mast off multiple times a year. I imagine that is a hell of a load on a mast with 145mph winds. Do people just pay a lot for really good boat insurance?

Honestly the only one at risk so far is that kite surfer. Aren’t the yachts just heading out to sea south of the hurricane till it’s passed over and then return to port? Miami is far enough south of really getting blasted by Ian, I’d only worry about hitting the docks myself.

I tend to agree about getting south of the storm. Being at dock when the storm surge rolls in snapping moorage lines and then it’s a game of bumper boats with 80,000 lb yachts against fishing boats!! Haha. Not enough bumpers available to give then a rubber barrier 360 degrees around.

Would’ve been neat to see where these boats all ended up after the hurricane passed through. I wonder if all these people took them and got out of harms way further out in the ocean somewhere away from the storm or if they all got caught off guard and was swept up with all the rest of the boats?

I'm a life long Miami boater. I grew up running boat through this inlet and I'm almost 50. Every size from a 20 footer to my current boat which is a center console just shy of 40 foot. I don't know why anyone would ever run a boat in these conditions unless it was an emergency or to move a boat from an area that might have worse conditions. Even these 50+ footers, fishing in this? Hope they came in with full fish boxes.

@@Stephen85 They probably knew they weren't getting any fish that day. The fish goes to deeper waters when it's this rough so they likely won't be feeding and seeking refuge
@Stephen85
@Stephen85 Жыл бұрын
@@cheeseslice9826 actually the bottom fish go absolutely nuts feeding after a big hurricane. The storms push in huge amounts of grouper and snapper and the fishing for these species is as good as it gets for a couple of weeks after a really big hurricane. It takes at least a cat 3 to do it though. Those boats usually fish in really deep water anyway. Up here in the panhandle we fish for bottom fish deep dropping out to 800' and fish for pelagics in much deeper water than that.
