Sorry I can't make a direct comment, but a really nice way to make mash is to bake the potatoes for at least 90 mins, and mash with the skin on. Much nicer!

try adding some frozen mixed veg you do not have to precook it just add to your meat base..you must let the meat chill..it will form a skin on which your mash can sit ..then bake in the oven i add sliced tomatoes and cheese to the top of my cottage pies and also its lovely to add some herbs to your mash for extra flavour ...nice video and thank you 🙂

Brave attempt, Gareth! I'm sure you've got the message about cooling the ingredients before combining. Also, drain most of that liquid off the filling, leaving it moist but not swimming, and use the liquid to make gravy. We serve ours with a big pile of peas and the gravy.

If you wanted the gravy a bit thicker then just use some corn flour, mixed with cold water, it is not detrimental to the taste.

Top tip for not peeling potatoes. Cook them with the skin on and put them through a potato ricer (like a big garlic press) straight on top of the cottage. They come out mashed, fluffy and skinless, but you will have to pull out the skin from the bottom of the ricer between loadings. You can also add butter, salt and the garlic if you want. I got a grand stainless steel potato ricer from the charity shop down the road for £1:50, well worth the investment, even if it’s another item to clutter the kitchen.

Wow ! well done Gareth, I've just made one for me and the wife to come back to as we're going to the pub at teatime and we can just heat the cottage pie up when we return. Dead easy to make from scratch which I did. Tips, keep the meat sauce relatively dry, let it cool off in the dish, make your mash creamy and place on the meat sauce with a dessert spoon size blobs all over, then smooth. Add cheese and bread crumbs if desired. Great Effort, keep em coming. 😀👍

My signature meal is cottage pie, which my whole family loves and often ask me to make. I have been using the same basic recipe for over 40yrs now and I have never had need to change it, (although I have experimented a bit from time to time). I have found the best way to stop the mash sinking into the mince is to let the mince go cold and 'set' in an individual portion bowl. Make the mash very smooth, almost soft, and carefully spread the mash over the mince with a long spatula while the potato is still hot. Before heating in the oven, brown and crispen the potato under the grill, (you can also freeze your cottage pie after browning the top}. Loved watching you make your cottage pie Gareth, though I did cringe when I saw you dump all the mash onto a still hot bowl of mince.

For southerners or non-British people wondering what Henderson's Relish is, you would use it as you would Worcestershire Sauce, it's similar but does have a distinctly different flavour. Unlike Worcestershire sauce, Hendersons is vegan and does not contain anchovies.

The reason that pie was so good was that beautiful cheesey mash you made, and the carrots and garlic you added. I reckon if you'd done that with plain old fried mince it would have been just as fantastic. The can probably saved time, but can plainly see you can make wonderful cottage pie from scratch. I'm a big fan of cottage pie meself!

Excellent result! The finely chopped carrot fried off was a brainwave. For putting a layer of mash on top you really need a piping bag, and it helps if the mash is not too dry. When you were contemplating whether to put some milk in, I would definitely have done so.

Do what you did put your vegs in and your seasoning then put your cook mash and cheese on top. Delicious 😊 I used the stewing steak to make a pie straight from the tin as it already cooks in the oven. ❤😊

M&S does some pretty good tinned meals including mince, bolognese, chicken tikka, chicken curry, steak and kidney. We found them useful when we originally used a motorhome to do some touring up in Scotland. Best way to make mash is to use a ricer. However, I often cook the potato as big as possible and then slice. Cover the top of the mince and either brush with plenty of butter or cover with grated cheese ..... Pop under grill to golden crisp up the top.

I tried this - being wheelchair bound I'm in favour of anything quick and easy. I went the whole hog and used supermarket mash. Meat straight from the tin into the pie dish, mash straight from the fridge on top - it didn't sink - then 30 min in the oven and dished up with tinned baby carrots and Bisto onion gravy. Easy, surprisingly good and, more to the point, my other half (who is a picky eater) thought so too. The supermarket mash was a bit soft and 400g wasn't quite enough, so next time I'll probably do proper mash, but without your video I would never have thought of using tinned mince and onions so thanks for that, Gareth. (I didn't add anything to the mince and onions except for a few splashes of Maggi seasoning, which I use with pretty much anything containing meat.)

You could put the tinned mince with a pack of browned mince using it as gravy for fast tea topped with mash. Give the tinned mince a bit of bant 😂

Well done Gareth, it sure does look good. Now you should petition Lidl to get a shop in your town. So far, you've had pretty good success with the food you bought at Lidl. A lovely vlog, thankyou!😊.

Nice one Gareth 👍 Yes a piping bag definitely would've made applying the mash a lot more evenly. Another method is to spread the mash out on a greased sheet of baking paper and then carefully turn it onto the cottage mince. Tip is to trace the cooking bowl size onto the paper and use that as a guide. Turn the paper over before adding the mash. You don't want ink or pencil in the mash. Cheers mate 🤤😀

I think you did an excellent job, adding ingredients to the beef and onion whilst boiling the potatoes. Nothing tastes better than a bit of butter; I use Kerrygold butter, nothing like it. Plus, someone I know his relatives sell their dairy to Kerrygold so I feel I'm helping the family! Great job Gareth! Cooking is always an improvisation, I do it myself quite frequently!

Hi Gareth, I like adding a bit of chopped fresh tomato, and a small handful of chopped frozen sweet peppers, to those ingredients, just to lighten the mince up, but otherwise this is pretty much one of my regular quick meals, and very good it is too. It's always a bit of a faff getting the mash to spread over the top, but it can be done with a bit patience, and I've found it helps if the mash is a bit thinned with some milk or indeed cream, but yes overall a good result! It is the eating that really counts... Oh and PS - for added amusement almost the same filling makes quite a decent meat pie...

I like this type of video Gaz. It gives folk ideas of how to make simple tasty meals for, let's face it, not a lot of money. Maybe a new "budget cooking" type of playlist is coming?

You are a better cook than me! I would have used tinned carrots, put the mince straight from the tin and into the dish and topped it with Smash. lol Try tinned mince in a bread roll, delicious.

For a change you could also make a suet crust pastry with 8oz self raising flour 4 oz of suet couple of tablespoons cold water pinch salt. Roll it out stick it on top of tinned mince. Easy pie.
