I was in the British Merchant Navy from 1969 to 1999. Quite often we came across private yachts (Super Yachts was not a term used at the time), all with the odd exception were very well designed yachts with a nice funnel and sleek lines. They were a pleasure to see. Nowadays it's extremely rare to see such a yacht. Nearly all (in my opinion) are ugly, as time goes on they become even more ugly. During the latter days of my sea going days I was offered a senior position on one of these 'yachts', I flew out to the yacht in question. I took one look at the yacht and caught the next flight home, I didn't even board the vessel. Thankfully I'm now retired so all a distant memory.

It's CRAZY SCARY. I went to Egypt with my wife in 2004, I think, or around then anyway. We went to Sharm El-Sheikh as we have been to all places to do some diving as we'd done alot of cool sites. Egypt was 1 of the places on our list to do, we wanted to do the Pyramids an vally of the kings. We got a few days of diving in, then took a drive to Cairo for a couple of nights. Then come back to do more diving. I choose Egypt as I wanted to dive "The SS Thistlegorm" as it happens after Cairo I was ill with a deli belly. So bad that I was unable to go diving and didn't get to do the thistlegorm which at the time I was gutted, however it was a blessing in disguise as stuff went wrong with the comppany at the time of us supposed to be doing the dive. It saved us from something by cancelling the dive trip that day. We also had an issue with going out for a dive in a group as my wife's tank was faulty which we only found out while diving out in the blue. I don't know what it was that made me just check her SPG (she was my buddy aswel lol) it literally had a few breaths left in it when I checked the SPG. The guide come over to us as I'd signaled him. He said to ascend, as I was giving her my spare regulator and went to fill her BCD it was completely out and couldn't be filled up. I had to manually fill it for her, I took off her w8 belt so she could ascend easier. that was 1 of a few close calls on that dive trip. Didn't realise at the time as we was only 21 & naive to the world.

For the UK MAIB to issue such a statement is a new one from what I have heard. In aviation this is now quite common where severe safety breaches lead to airlines or countries being effectively blacklisted - so this is a positive step by the MAIB.

Did a number of snorkeling trips in Egypt three years ago, several near Marsa Alam. What surprised me was how many 50+ foot vessels were powered by a single screw, something I never see in Chicago. On one level. these underpowered vessels were just irritatingly slow; one trip took 2+ hours to travel 20 miles in relatively calm water. But I also imagine that these vessels would have a hard time fleeing from an oncoming storm; moreover, from my own experience captaining a 30 foot cruiser, having twin screws was much safer for maneuvering the ship when docking or in other "tight" navigating situations.
@robertlevine21524 күн бұрын
Stability issues usually come into focus before sea trials. In the weeks before sea trials the Classification Societies require that an inclining test be done. The inclining tests are used to verify centers of buoyancy and gravity, righting arm, metacentric height. The tests are done to verify vessel stability. Having to remove a deck for stability reasons is an unthinkable error. One ship that would have benefitted from an inclining test was the Vasa, Sweden's flagship to be. In 1628 the Vasa capsized and sank about 1,300m (1400yds) into her maiden voyage in Stockholm's harbor

What do you think the cost of those "modifications" to REV cost?
@barroosa4 күн бұрын
Regarding the Bayesian, it keeps being mentioned that there was ballast added to the keel to offset the longer mast. What is not being mentioned is that the "keel" is a centerboard that is articulable. I wonder if the engineering on the changes was done while the centerboard was extended. If so it's righting effect while retracted would be considerably reduced and would change the righting moment and many of the angles that are discussed. Novice observation.
@anthonybeaumont47804 күн бұрын
Yes, you are right, this boat was doomed to sink..😢
@philhawley12194 күн бұрын
The lifting keel was mentioned as an important factor by eSysman in his very first report on this sad incident.
@deerfootnz4 күн бұрын
Very much a novice observation. The key issue with Bayesian and others like it is the very low down flooding angle. The change in righting moment due to the keel would not have materially changed the unfortunate outcome.
@daniellarge97844 күн бұрын
The ballast in Bayesian is part lifting keel and part fixed in the hull. I can't remember the exact figures but its something like 200t in the hull and 70t in the lifting keel. The ballast added was to the fixed hull ballast. The lifting keel remained unchanged. I'm sure this info was in a previous esysman video.
@deerfootnz4 күн бұрын
@@daniellarge9784 The boat was knocked down by extreme local wind to somewhere close to 90⁰. Down flooding of the hull commenced when the boat reached something like 45⁰. Keel up/keel down/extra ballast etc would only make a few degrees difference. The water would still have poured in, and the boat would still have sunk.

@@deerfootnz You have learned exactly nothing from the last time. Tourism is lifeblood to Egypt, and you can talk highfaluting theory about Cultural Heritage till the cows come home, but the reality is extracting as much dosh as possible from the punters at the lowest possible cost, and if some don't survive, such is the will of the Almighty. If Egypt isn't going to lift a finger to ensure basic human rights are applicable, this becomes piracy, no better than at the other end of the Red Sea. And it hasn't, as the evidence of the last decade shows. Well, if the bakhsheesh is all that matters, then isn't it time for the outside community to bell the cat?
