Those yachts are just mindblowing. I was in Monaco many years ago and Lionheart v.1 (or maybe later - but definitely not the current Lionheart) was moored. Huge. And to later find out that (sir) Philip Green who destroyed BHS and blighed many pensioners futures now has a newer, bigger, shinier boat to evade tax on is galling.

If I remember other episodes correctly he uses marinetraffic (just Google it). Probably one of the paid tiers. The free tier hides certain interesting data and only tracks ships with land based AIS receivers. You have to pay for full registry/GPS/history data and satellite tracking.

How deep is the draft on this $1M yacht that couldn't get out of the port of Baltimore? Am I missing something here? Did it require the deep water channel that was blocked by the container vessel, in order to depart? I think not. Or was the yacht transporter vessel stuck in the port of Baltimore?
@williamlloyd3769Ай бұрын
Thinking the constructor of yacht didn’t want to place it in seawater before delivery or that placing it in water would have trigger tax of some sort once commissioned. Seems they could have placed on a barge and taken it further down the coast to any number of ports for export.

@ycplum7062Ай бұрын
Actually, it is done all the time. An accident does not relieve you financially. It only relieves you of criminal charges. This is particularly true if you did not properly maintain the ship or take proper precautions as alleged by the yacht dealer. Note that the city of Baltimore is alleging something similar.

However : LVMH owns Royal van Lent … that is one of the shipyards that is part of Feadship ( like Lurssen Feadship is not one shioyard, it’s several yards - just that they have different owners) So the owner of LvMH got a yacht made by a company he owns. @markmiller9838Ай бұрын
I feel I must disagree or you must clarify what you said at 4:40 minutes about the gross tons not being the weight of the yacht if placed on a giant scale. The displacement is the weight of the water pushed out of the "hole" the ship makes in the water, but that is the same as the weight of the yacht if on that giant scale. Here's what Google says about it: A ship's displacement is the weight of water it displaces when it's floating, which is the same as the weight of the ship and its contents. Displacement is calculated indirectly by using Archimedes' principle to first calculate the volume of water displaced, then converting that value into weight.
@DAVIDMILLER-nc9voАй бұрын
Well said!
@dominicbuckley8309Ай бұрын
Gross registered tonnage has no relation to weight or displacement. It is a measure of the useable VOLUME inside the hull ('ton' in this context being derived from 'tun', a measurement of 100 cubic feet). It is used for merchant vessels as an indication of cargo-carrying capability (large yachts are registered as merchant ships and therefore measured similarly, even though they do not carry cargo).
@firstlast1047Ай бұрын
Gross tons and displacement are not related. Gross tons refers to the nominal cargo carrying capacity. The calculation involves ignoring dead space, machinery space, galley, crew quarters, the bridge, etc.
