Ryan.... this is painful to watch so can imagine what it’s like there. Working on a 240z at the moment and took the plunge and got a rotisserie. Man it’s life-changing. Take a weekend and build one and you’ll never look back. This project really needs one. Plus it would be a nice project to film for others thinking about making one. Otherwise you are doing a sterling job. Chin up... and crack on!

Learnt a trick off a posh German car-body builder - been using it all week & it works. Instead of cardboard he grabs a sheet of plain A4 paper, holds it in place with small magnets (I've been using little neodymium ones) & traces the ope with a dirty finger. (I always have a dirty finger to hand). That gives a REALLY precise template, cut it out with scissors & then bang onto the fresh sheet steel with the magnets - cut out, voila, precision fit panel. Far more accurate than cardboard & far easier to do. Works great for holes big & small. :-)

I had a 1977 Datsun 280Z, everything was great until the rust started, it rusted out so fast even after stripping down and repainting the rust started again two years later. These cars are the biggest rust buckets ever made. I finally had the second round of rust repaired and got rid of that rust bucket.

This is like an archaeological examination of car repair standards of the past 40 years. The evolution of car repairs and how things have improved and acceptable standards have changed significantly, each layer is a piece of automotive repair history. The majority of that would have been stick welded or oxy acetylene. No signs of any brazing so far.

They've repaired so much on this car they're well past the point of no return. The entire offside and most of the engine bay area are done. Since they're creating most of the panels themselves it's not even really a matter of money, just time and energy.

Haha there was just rust everywhere, just had to show the boot filled with Rotsun rust :D. There was just so much rust on the floor, that throwing the pieces back at it didn't really make much more of a mess. And unfortunately it didn't work when I threw the new floor pan in at the end. Somehow I though it would be fixed, but it isn't :( haha! Yep, at some point all the rust will be gone and we can get to mechanical stuff and prepping for paint! Long ways to go though. So, multi-layered floorboards and chassis rails weren't designed like that from the factory and are the result of a previous restoration?
@Ragnar8504
@Ragnar8504 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. The original part started rotting and no one bothered cutting anything out, just plated over the top to get the car through another MOT. And by the looks of it they just grabbed some flat sheet and hammered it around the part they wanted to repair rather than shaped the piece on the bench.
@yorkshirecarrestoration
@yorkshirecarrestoration Жыл бұрын
They are indeed a result of a previous repair. You can see the bad welds and this side was a lot different to the other side (the other side didn't have 2 layers of chassis rail!) And yes, Ragnar is completely correct
@TheScubapez376

If you add aluminium to all that rust, you may inadvertently make Thermite. That may be a fitting result for this car!! TBH Ryan, yours and Rocco’s dedication to sorting this car out is phenomenal. Hats off to you Sir, Well Done. I don’t think they actually repaired the car, they just welded over it to hide the problem.

The question is would you have started it if you’d known what a disaster it was going to turn out to be? It’s going to be interesting to see you fabricate new cross members for the floor especially the one that appeared to carry the seat mountings. Are you going to brace it before you go any further with that sill repair as I can imagine the shell distorting if you take much more out….
@joescully566
@joescully566 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts entirely stu. You would have thought if you knew how bad it was, it would have been scrapped. The good thing is no guilt for taking the restomod route, because it would be crushed by the majority of us.

Yes, we would have done. I wont give up on this project and no matter how bad it gets, we will still continue. The bracing gets welded in the next Datsun video. There is very little chance of distortion as in front and behind the removed panel is still intact. We will ensure that the door fits before welding the new panel in as we still have more to cut out. Thanks

i mean the question everyone wants to know is it really worth it and how much is this costing? any car with hidden repairs can never be rust protected properly so is it just going to rust again in 5 years. i'm glad we don't salt our roads.

I honestly don’t know your line.. That is that the amount of work required is Beyond Economic Repair & that materials and man-hours are a higher costing than the return of the sale of the car. OR there is no line, it’s about returning the car to its former glory and about the car itself. The satisfaction of getting a disaster passed its MOT and making it last for another 20+ years.

Is anyone else finding this insipid music annoying? An electronic voice repeating the same phrase over and over... UGH. I have to turn the volume off through most of the videos. I'm really interested in following this build, but... I'd rather hear the grinding and the metalwork than this canned electronic crap.

If you can make a decent looking and safe car out of this load of oxide then almost anything is possible. How many replacement panels do you have, or are available, and how much are you going to have to fabricate from scratch ? There's not a lot there to use as patterns is there.
