The damage salt-water does when it gets into even the best protected places is still one that will cause the next owners a problem, forEVER..... that's a tough thing about boats. peace

In many cases an open transom can save a boat from sinking. For example - I was on a 21 foot center console with an open transom when it took a rogue wave over the gunwale. The boat was half full of water. The owner was at the console - put it in gear and hit the throttle - 90 percent of the water went out over the transom. In a closed transom boat - we would have capsized on the next wave. If you forget the plug - or have any kind of major leak - a closed transom will not save you.

It wasnt going anywhere. There was 4 rescue personnel before it even went over, plus 2 smooth brains on jet ski's and the charter boat... well they couldn't be bothered.. they were fine and where the boat was when the anchor finally caught was kicking out into calm water. That's an easy swim without a pdf.. and on the down side of all, that easily could have been his entire business that he lost because a jetski couldn't hold on (questionable) and a charter boat said "ahh it's going to sink why bother" The dude who threw the anchor was screaming for help, not picked up in this vid be he did comment on another said he was begging for the jersey guy to help tow in but... he also said first thought was throw anchor, which I agree dead motors in a strong current you can't steer best you can do is anchor, sadly, the anchor caught after the motors were sunk which is usually 75% of the cost. Hopefully he had insurance or soaked the motors and cleaned the salt water out then... oh damn I'm watching them drag the boat back, it's missing a motor. Thats a cool 20k gone.. f diving in that tide to float a motor. Atleast he didn't cap himself once he knew it was a lost cause. Depending on circumstances I totally wouldn't blame him

My guess is they either forgot the plug (I've done it too) or ran out of gas in the worst possible place for that specific boat design with a low transom. They then dropped the anchor, which would have helped, except they were in the worst possible place because of that low transom. With it anchored they were bow into that strong current, forcing the bow up, while their transom is forced lower and facing into standing waves over topping that transom and sinking the boat.

18:19...Now that IS hard to explain to the prospective buyers casually lounging in the stern. Too much 'Luxury", possibly consider an automatic ladder.

It's still floating/foundering. Get a line on it and tow it toward the beach!🤦♂️

So when these boats sink here by Haulover, and they actually go down, to the bottom, what happens to them? Do they sit on the bottom, forever, becoming structure for the underwater critters? Or do diving crews go down and somehow salvage them, somehow bring them back up? Or.....?

In this scenario some dumbass in a blue Towboat hooks a line on it, parbuckles it upright and gets the water pumped out and floating again. (That’s me, I’m the dumbass in the blue Towboat at 12:30)

@@CaptNickRivelli that's a sweet looking towboat

@@4exgold thanks man, the 900hp makes jobs like this a lot easier. I can usually flip them by just getting a line on the trailer eye and pulling hard. On a smaller boat with twin 200-300’s you usually have to throw a second line on the stern to help roll it over.

Dont think the thousands fleeing (hundreds drowning) across the Mediterranean would agree that those were "two of the most tragic" boating events.

Once that anchor was dropped, and they saw the water coming in over the transom, the anchor line should have been cut so the boat could float freely. It may have ended up on the rocks but would have had a chance of floating out to sea for a proper rescue. This could happen to anyone but the captain saw the waves coming over the transom and still let the mate play with the bow anchor.

I have a CC with a similar open transom. He likely lost power, they dropped anchor from the bow which allowed waves over the stern. Perhaps they should have dropped anchor from the stern so the bow would take the waves or not drop the anchor. The positive of the open transom is that I can stuff the bow or take waves over the stern but as long as I have power, i kick up the bow and all the water rushes out the stern in seconds.
