In this video, we provide an update on the boat that capsized yesterday at Haulover Inlet. This weekend was ruthless for boat captains. Strong currents combined with choppy waves made for a disastrous combination for many. Don’t miss this video.

Why do people take these small open bow boats designed for lakes and rivers, like Yamaha and Tahoe, out on the choppy sea. Oh and having 5 to 8 people on board with none wearing life jackets 🙄
@BoatZone5 ай бұрын
That’s a question I keep asking myself. I think it’s due to lack of knowledge; most of them are rental boats or first-time owners. There are calm days when it’s a smooth ride, but if it’s dangerous, why go out?

We had this old lake boat cabin cruiser as kids and for some reason my dad thought the only way to drive it was full throttle. We all hurt our backs and got tossed around and the boat always overheated because the engine was not meant to be driven like that. The boat couldn’t even get on plane. It would have been great to just cruise around in! It was then that I realized not everyone is meant to be a boat captain!

In many countries the maritime law has a 5 knot rule, "Go no faster than 5 knots (a fast walking pace) within: 50m of another vessel or swimmer. 200m of the shore, any structure, or any vessel flying a dive flag." As that inlet is only about 100m wide it would mean every boat would be restricted to 5 knots when passing through.
@Phushywillow5 ай бұрын
I think that's a good rule to have depending on the conditions and behavior of the area and water they are in. As you may have noticed, most of the boats that are travelling at a faster speed, zip right on through the inlet with very little front to back rocking or "stuffing" the bow into the next wave in front. Of course some boats can't handle that speed or have enough mass to carve through the waves at speed, but boats like that really shouldn't be going up the center inlet where the waves are biggest, and roughest. I do think that some people enjoy being tossed around, and aim for the "rapids" or "waves" for a wild ride, then put themselves in a spot that they quickly regret, and some pay the ultimate price.

Just out of curiosity, where do these families go once they're out in the ocean? My local inlet is the Manasquan, NJ inlet and once you leave the Manasquan River, there's nothing for a family to do (unless it's a super fisherman family that will go 100-200 miles or out to the Canyon to fish) - but there's nothing to do that would require roll up mats, inflatables etc.
