Nearly two decades ago I purchased on a whim a device called "Check - Go" by Techasonic (yes, I still have the box). It is cylindrical in shape and the top part of the device lifts off. A ball is placed on the "cup", the top part is put back on the button of the back is pushed and the ball spins. There is no indication of how fast it spins but, it is very fast. You can hear the sound of the ball spin and then if you watch the rapidly rotating dimples (you can hardly see them) you will be able to see it stabilize. With a sharpie I place a dot on the top of the ball and them I touch the sharpie on the equator of the ball and a line is drawn around the ball. This line them becomes the "high & low" circumference of the ball. It will rotate over that line when the ball is squarely struck and you can see if the ball was squarely struck by the perfect line on the ball as it rolls toward the spot at which you were aiming. Like automobile tires, they are not perfectly round nor are the in perfect balance. Some brands are better than others but NONE are perfect. You have the tires on your vehicles balanced to make a smoother ride and help eliminate vibration. This vibration you feel when you drive faster is the same wobble the golf ball has when it is spinning after being struck by any of the golf clubs. The more spin a club imparts on the ball the more it will vibrate off line. This test done in this video was very well done to show the lightest spot on the golf ball. Having to buy a bag of salt and take this much time is a waste. The Check - Go is very reliable and quick. I spin every ball I play with. There are NO PERFECT BRANDS OUT THERE. I have spun every brand of ball that I have found and sometime you can't even get the ball to stay on the cup as it spins. It literally vibrates off. The top that goes on before it is spun keeps it from flying off. I've been using the Check - Go device for over twenty (20) years and I swear by it. It does make a difference and the line that is drawn on it as it is spun it the perfect alignment line. The ones placed on balls by the manufacture has NEVER been on the line drawn as the ball is spinning. FACT! I can't remember the price exactly but, I believe it was in the $20 - $30 range. Well worth it, as it is still working and, I can spin and mark a dozen balls in about 15 minutes.

I use the Check-Go-Pro as well. It finds the balance point of the ball. A good check to see if it works is to place the ball BACK into the rotator after marking the dot and you'll see the dot comes up on top again or 180 out on the bottom. It's NOT a "bad ball", just one that has a specific balance point. They instruct you to place the dot facing you and the line pointed at your target, whether teeing off or putting. I've found this works extremely well when putting. If the line doesn't wobble on the putt, you've struck it correctly and the balls natural balance point rolls true.

Gabe, this was a very interesting video and test. I remember like others have mentioned a couple years back when it was pointed out that Callaway had an issue with their balls, so they re-worked the manufacturing process to correct it. They must be doing well because the chrome soft X is a four-piece ball, and they were still well balanced with the multiple layers, which I'm sure is not easy. I normally play a Srixon ball, but I think after this test I might start using the Titleist Pro V1. I need all the excuses I can get.

This is a simple static balance test. I was given a device as a "silly" gift called a Golf Ball Sweet Spot finder, which looks a little like R2D2, which spins the ball up to a few thousand rpm (don't know the exact number) and you can then use a sharpie through a couple of apertures to mark the dynamic equator or the axis of rotation. The vast majority always return to the same axis of rotation, which is one of the principal moments of inertia of the ball. I'm guessing the few which don't return to the same place are "perfectly balanced". But, as long as you align to the dynamic equator, the ball will still fly and roll straight - can't eliminate a bad hit unfortunately.
@YoungMoneyInvestments
@YoungMoneyInvestments 2 жыл бұрын
Problem with this is that you can’t touch your ball and align it after every swing. Approach shots into the green are especially when you want the proper axis of rotation and if your ball isn’t balanced, you won’t get that.

Great stuff and good to know there are other engineering geeks out there checking their balls. Been doing it for years with both salt and high speed spinning (DIY Dremel spinner and then the Check-Go.) I mark a line using the a primary rotational axis for refence (90 degrees off the center mark). My DIY conclusion: centered balls hit the mark 22% more AND out of balance balls driven along the marked rotational lines hit pay grass 38% more often. I'm not a statistician, but in practical terms it seems like that means anywhere from 2 to 4 of 10 shots that would have been offline are online. I'm an honest 21 hcp so for me, that seems a worthwhile figure.

Not mentioned in the video is that Callaway (a) makes their own balls (instead of having them made in a factory in Asia) and (b) they had SERIOUS issues along these lines with the 2020 version of the ChromeSoft and ChromeSoft X. Cutting them open, you could actually see how out-of-round they were inside. So they re-tooled their manufacturing and quality control processes in order to eliminate the problem. This video is the first I've seen that looked at this issue specifically with the ChromeSoft. It looks like Callaway was successful. This was a much bigger problem back when tour balls were built around a liquid center, with windings inside and a balata cover. Not only did they come from the factory in all kinds of shapes, they tended to go out-of-round due to routine play. Professionals would test each ball before putting it in the bag, and they'd switch balls after 3 or 4 holes as a matter of practice. They were also easy to scuff and cut. But now, with solid, multi-layer balls with urethane covers, you can play the ball until you lose it.

I've found that 2/3 of the off the shelf pro v1, pro vx and Tour Speed balls run out of balance. Even the test balls Titleist sent me . I found the new laser Chrome Soft balls were in balance, as you found. I tested other balls and found Kirkland, Bridgestone TOUR BRX and TOUR BXS ran between 75% and 83% balanced. I also checked out Dicks Maxfli TOUR X came in at 70%. I think the two piece balls, like the Ultra stand a better chance to be balanced. Balance really comes into play when putting. Your test is simple. You still have to find the ball that fits your game and has the fewest flaws built into it.

I have been using a Check-Go ball spinner for years, playing Titleist ProV1s always. Years ago 90% showed balance issues. Today less than 10% do. Fortunately, with the spinner you can draw a line around the ball that catches the heavy/light axis. But orienting that line vertically, and along the axis of the strike or putt, it negates the effect of a heavy spot. They stay on line. My experience is Titleist balls are exceptionally well balanced these days.

Part of my job is vibration analysis. I can assure you there is a very big difference between static balance and dynamic balance. A golf ball will spin at thousands of rpm’s when struck with a club. Until you watch the ball spin at thousands of rpm’s you cannot tell if it’s dynamically balanced. Putting is another topic. At low rpm the visible static imbalance will have more obvious effect.

This only tests the fact that there could be trapped air bubbles in the core polymer manufacturing process which affects the buoyancy point of the ball. The fact that you had to add all that salt to the water to increase the buoyancy of the water, indicates that there are imperfections of trapped air inside. The way the ball flows through the air or roll on the green should be little affected given gravity and the density of the ball. Use the stint ramp and roll the ball with the “balance” point end over end vs left/right on a level surface to see if it rolls one way or another.

The unbalanced ball should roll straighter if you put the heaviest spot forward while rolling it down the ramp, and it should be worse when rolled with any other orientation. You're making me want to buy a stimpmeter now ... great video!

2 piece balls are easier to get consistent in density it would seem. But I heard that if you have a balance point determined you put that on the line you draw on the ball to align putts and the ball will roll straight.

I am surprised that any of the cheap two piece were out of balance. You have the core and the cover so it is hard to screw that up but apparently they did. The premium balls are three & four piece so they are much more difficult to manufacture and more likely to be out of balance. I am really surprised about the Pro V1 because they tested best during the My Golf Spy quality tests. A couple of years ago the Callaway Chrome Soft tested really really bad but you have to give credit to Callaway. They owned it and expended over 50 million dollars upgrading they factories to stop those quality issues. I had stopped playing Callaway balls for that reason but it looks like they got their shit together. I might have to switch back to Callaway CS from Titleist ProV1. Thanks for the great video.

The speed at which it returns to the spot also determines how out of balance the ball is. If it returns very slowly, you're actually pretty good. If it returns quickly then you have an out of balance ball.

This is not necessarily determining if a ball is bad or not. Youre simply finding the heavy side of the ball. Next step would be small 50mg of lead tape on the dot and then see if the ball flips over. If so then the balls center is close enough. If the tape stays on top then you would know the center is too far off to be used. Also larger tape could be used depending on your preference of tolerance.

you need to add some jetdry to take the surface tension off the water. You'll find that just about any ball has a slight imbalance. I've been doing this for years and actually balance the balls before I play. I use epsom salts to condition the water.
@paliprincess7864
@paliprincess7864 11 ай бұрын
@stevenhope3697 You are exactly correct! Jetdry or WD40 as David Lake the founder of Gravity Golf showed in his youtube video. I'm sorry but this test does NOT work unless you use Jetdry. I have been doing that for about 8 years and I have never found a perfectly balanced ball like this guy is finding due to the lack of Jetdry added to break the water tension.

@@LetsPlayThru So unfortunately I didn't have the most optimum test, because I'm a cheapo and I bulk purchase the AAAAA used golf balls. So that may play a factor in my results. I did have a sleeve of new 2020 Chromesoft x ls, as well as a sleeve of new Vice Pro Plus. Results: Bridgestone Tour B X - 6/15 passed (9 being bad) Vice Pro Plus - 3/3 passed. Impressive. 2020 Chromesoft x ls - 1/3 passed (2 bad) I'm unsure if the Callaways I used are when they started using the laser to fix their QA issues -- it doesn't say it on the box so my assumption is no. So, bad results for Bridgestone but again these were the used 5A golf balls so that may be the issue. I think a cool follow-up to your video would be to play a few holes with one of the good balls you tested, and see if anything changes. Would be great to know how long you can play a golf ball before it becomes a "bad" ball.

I thought it was me until I looked at them closer and rolled them across the table and noticed they didn't roll straight. Now granted these were used but my thinking is how many times can you hit these before they go out of round.

Only four spins, all touching the side of the cup. A fun game to win if you can get the dot nearly to the top. A better test would be ten or fifteen spins, placing a new dot each time. The "out-of-balance" ball would show all twelve dots in the same spot. Balanced ball would show green dots - twelve- fifteen dots all over the ball.

Hogan did this with all the balls he played with; he knew this back in the 50s, exactly the same method you present. with the common person’s bad swing this is probably a waste of time. Except if you want to use it to the advantage; as stated above, when putting put the center of rotation on the putt line. It might roll truer, if your stroke can roll it. And maybe if you slice maybe it can be figured to not slice as much.
