Keep in mind that eugen don't have a publisher. They've been historically pretty strapped for cash and this early access release is another way of funding for them. @dougf12492 жыл бұрын
you both rare and part of the problem as a consumer. Multiple that trust but with less understanding as to why this funding price tag is there and you get most consumers. Look at Bungie and Destiny 1. I remember an Angry Joe rant about Destiny 1 that forever shows my point. He was cobra commander in the skit. Joe: “No they bought it on the name alone” Time and time again, with no guarantees, publishers put out garbage unfinished games but slap stickers like “early access” on it and try to syphon money out of us gamers. And even more of a tragedy is that it works. That’s why cookie cutter CoD games come out every year. Sure this developer may be different. They may actually finish this game and have it be worth $40 or more. And your faith may be in good placement. But industry shows otherwise. For me, a $40 (that’s 2/3 the price of a full game) is a huge red flag for what I saw.
@lookslikeEzio2 жыл бұрын
@@dougf1249 think further than 1 meter for once, please. What good would it be for eugen if they left the game ultimately unfinished? Their reputation would be ruined and no one would ever buy from them again. They're not a big studio like dice that can afford to treat their customers like shit at every turn. Additionally, all the assets they already made for the game (including the maps, which look really freaking good), would effectively be wasted time. Additionally, releasing in early acces due to a lack of funding (and free beta testing lol), is far away from "milking gamers dry" as you claim. After all, when they ultimately finish the game, many players will already own the game, leading to a lower income in the long term. If the game had a plethora of pre-order and early access DLC, i'd absolutely agree with you. But as it stands, i believe early access is due to the lack of a publisher on eugens end as well as the desire for player input (and free bugtesting lol).

So now my full question towards Eugen about this as their EA post mentions "we want the basic scope completed after 6 months". I read this as "Ok they want to complete and refine the core features and balance using User reaction (Like this entire video)". So they basically gave us a Prototype or Alpha build of the game. And told us they want us to help refine it to Beta. And made us pay for it. The key part is what comes after: "If players are satisfied, we will want to release WARNO after in full after 6-8 months." Is this 6-8 months in ADDITION to the 6 months previous? Or are they saying they want to take this game, finish its basics in 6 months then release 2 months after. I could accept and feel hopeful for the project if they plan on releasing the game in a full year from now. Is this a shitty move? Yeah it is. I'd recommend against the title right now as some aspects need radical redesign (UI Mainly). And the issue with damage settings being very very very placeholder right now. Basically every unit has 10 HP, and those IGLA units do 4 damage. Which is just ridiculous as the heaviest helicopter and the lightest helicopters have the same HP values. I think that AT unit with no AT is only in the armory as it isn't actually in the 79th Deck (Despite it saying it is) which continues my thoughts that this is a full on Alpha build. Hopefully this means that Eugen plans to work on this for a year in Early Access before it comes out, but TBH I kind of wish they just did what they did with Steel Divisions where we get a "Beta" for like a month before release for the testing period. So what is it Eugen? You gana release the game in a year or six months?

But don't grab your pitchforks and try to sabotage the game before its even finished. Imo, them doing EA for this is a good thing because it means that the community can help shape the game to exactly what they want. I knew the game would basically be functional enough to experiment with, but unbalanced and buggy. Also to those saying "well they're asking a lot for a buggy EA game", and to that I say, so do a lot of indie studios.... Like, Ground Branch for example was hardly playable up until very recently and they actually RAISED the price. While its still not even out of EA and won't be for a long time.

@@squashiejoshie200000 Except that in reality how many aircraft are ever shot down by a single AA missile hitting both of them? Honestly I wonder if it's ever happened, it'd be cool to see. @chiken65592 жыл бұрын
AA missiles do have splash damage(if you can call it that) though in real life. Only missiles that are intended to intercept ballistic missiles are using kinetic energy instead of fragmentation to intercept targets, like PAC-3 for example if i remember correctly. There is just no point in trying to strike target kinetically unless it requires total destruction - like a ballistic missile, that will land on its target anyway no matter what kind of damage it takes unless it's actually destroyed. Helicopters and airplanes, however, can be put out of commission with just fragmentation damage - there is no need to spend additional money on improving guidance systems to allow missile to reliably hit targets all the time - it's much easier to make it explode and send a cloud of shrapnel towards its target. So yes, one missile can take down two helicopters flying close together. The problem is that a stinger has only a contact fuse and a tiny ass warhead. Stinger couldn't do it, but missiles in general could.
@OverG882 жыл бұрын
S300 missile works like a shotgun. It will probably never hit you directly, but rather explode firing a shrapnel at you. Regarding taking down multiple targets with one missile, that actually even happened during Iraqi-Iranian war. His points regarding the game when talking about general topics like Early Access are still valid regardless. And besides, there is no defending a company that decides releasing a game, early access or not, in a bad state and then improving it later, should become the norm. That's not fair on the customers, it's not fair on the developers, it's not fair on the publishers. Because if a franchise gets a reputation for being terrible on Early Access, bad on release, but good after a few months, then people will just not buy it in early access, won't buy it on release, and just wait till those first few months pass to get the actual full proper release game. I legit don't know if this is what Eugen does, I don't play War Game, but I have seen companies do this tactic where they weaponise intentionally releasing a game poorly and restrict the ability to get refunds by making sure the game is 'just' good enough that most won't do so because the game is good, and that "it's just in a poor state for now", effectively imprisoning them until they break their delusions. It's one thing to have one bad launch that becomes good later, it's a whole other thing to have that become the new trend going forward. People hate getting ripped off even if eventually the money spent is worth it, because either the company just won't care enough to keep the customer coming back because they now have their money, or they decide continuing to support an action like that is not worth their time and money. It's why despite Helldivers 2 fixing the balance of the weapons, I and many others refuse to come back, because it's not worth getting betrayed again when they literally just had to do anything but what they did. The correct path was obvious and they waited till now to do so; why should I care about their future projects if they can't even maintain the thing they were perfectly maintaining without issue before. Having a bad launch followed by improvement should never become the norm, and must remain the exception. It's the devs responsibility to make a functional game that follows up on its promises, and it's the publishers' responsibility to release the product in a functional way that sells the product well for all groups involved in the product's creation. It is not the responsibility of the customer to replace their jobs for us so that we become their unpaid beta testers.

This has been quite the odd duck of video to me. Stealth17, Razzman and VulcanHDgaming (all of whom are clearlly fans of eugen/focus style RTS to some decree or other) Praised this. Vulcan is already posting matches and Stealth17 has made a tutorial video. Even Rangroo who gave the most negative review i had seen up to this point simply said "wait and see how it turns out". Again i must echo the statements that have already been brought up. Voicelines, UI(Yes UI change might be difficult but not impossible as SD2 has shown and if you don't like it well other certainly do, Rangroo certainly does), and units and their balance can be changed. Also i you did not compare a low-end gunship with BASIC infantry but what is on the scale of the 3rd Armored an ELITE INFANTRY. Mech-Inf has the highes number of men, most machineguns and an AT missile, no other unit in the third has that level of firepower. And the infantry is still the cheaper option. You talked about Scale i think Normandy 44s is the smallest (At least in how many units per BG). The developers acknowledged the speed being a problem in their official discord server. I can see a way how the aircraft can work even in such a small maps. The Nations vs Divisions debate is really a subjective one. To me the Nation system of Wargame always did give you more options but at the cost of elegance and being too messy. Trying to parse the differnesses between units in a heat of batte and at a distance was very difficult. Also going for divisions was valiuable from a realism stand point. No not the kind of BUT MUH REALIZUM bull but the kind that actualy plays to the kind of Tom Clancy style realism and authenticity which has been the corner stone of these strategy games. Like you would never see LAV-25s APCs and AH-64 Apache helicopters in a same battlegroups because they were never part of the same branch. This has been mechanically and thematically a correct choice in my opinion. Also there is a picture here from the WARNO official discord server of a discussion between a player and developer: www.reddit.com/r/warno/comments/s8m06r/absolutely_loving_the_communication_thus_far/ If this is the communication then i'm cautiously optimistic that most of the things can be fixed. Also wheter this was EA or not is immaterial. The point is that from the get go before it was in EA the Developers were transparent that this game wouldn't be wargame and about what to expect from the game itself. The burden of you wanting a Wargame, of a game that has clearlly been stated that it wouldn't be that, is on you my friend. While you always do what you want as is your right, making a flame war video out of a just "released" game in public testing instead of a well thought out review that addresses the strenghts and weaknesses of the product in a calm and measured well thought out way would be a much better and fair way to go.

I think its pretty clear what happened here. It's no coincidence that Warno was announced a day after Broken Arrow released gameplay footage and got a lot of online hype. I think what happened is Eugen had been quietly working on Warno, with plans to release it for EA at a much later date, but panicked big time when they saw all the hype Broken Arrow got. Being made by former Eugen employees, I can see why Eugen would see BA as a threat. Anyways, I think Eugen tried to get ahead of BA by scrambling to release Warno much earlier than anticipated. I mean, we didn't get any of the previews, gameplay videos, deck build videos, etc, that SD2 got. BA seems to be following that sort of approach, gameplay vids, deck showcases, some dev blogs, etc. The heart and soul just doesn't seem to be in this game. We got no preview of WARNO. Just a "hey guys, Wargame 4 in a month!". I think the Eugen devs panicked and rushed out a broken, unfinished product here.

"core design, art style, focus; all of these things are absolutely judgeable" *proceeds to not talk about any of the above when criticising the game* This is a terribly made critique full of self-contradictions. Instead of following through on the initial promise of criticising the core design aspects of the game, the majority of it is spent on nitpicks and criticisms devoid of any actual substance ("it's just not good" without any clarification, etc). At the time the review was made, the game was in a rough state, but since then all of the things actually criticised in this video have been fixed save for the voice lines, which incidentally is one of the worst parts of this video - writing voice lines is absolutely not "zero effort", far from it. The video not only fails to demonstrate its first point (that the game is fundamentally flawed); in focusing on nitpicks it actively sets up it's second point (that the game is unlikely to be redeemed) to be disproven, which it since has. Personally i believe in the benefit of Early Access games. I think they are a great way to steer the game into a great direction (if not *away* from the bad direction, at least), that's the entire POINT of Early Access! My only issue is, people just... don't see it that way anymore. No matter what side of the argument, it seems like people just treat early access as already a finished product (and by "finished" i don't just mean the technical state, but the finality of the design choices). Did Eugen do an oopsie by selling the game with the price of a finished one? Yes. Is this common practice for the company? *Yes* . Does that excuse them from doing that? No. But I, myself, with my low standards, had a blast. The game *does* have great potential, and i loved the entire vibe of it. And besides, in my opinion, the game is anything *BUT* "wargame + steel division". It's the new sibling to the Wargame and Steel division franchise, and if Eugen realizes that, i think this game will do great WITHOUT being in the shadow of it's older "brothers" (that's a big "IF", yeah).

Just bought this on steam. Didn't realize it was even a wip. Been waiting for a more modern rts like this, also just got a new PC so I jumped on it. It's been a month since this video was posted. I've only played a couple games. But the way you're bashing this games mechanics is kinda dumb. It pretty well balanced atm. Fact is, you need infantry and most other units. But they've implemented it all very well in my opinion. If you had it your way it would likely be broken. I did stop the video at 2:54.

Early access needs more critique then release as its still in the stage where stuff can be and is being fixed so saying "its EA dont be critical" is dumb because that is the point of early access to be critical of a non released product.

This is really disappointing, I was hoping that WARNO was going to be a distillation of what worked in both SD44/SD2 and WGRD. Ah, well. Real shame that the single best Cold War-themed RTS to date is World in Conflict, which is an absolutely incredible game…from 2007.

I actually wouldn’t listen to Rimmy on this one. He’s mostly just being pedantic over stuff that doesn’t actually affect gameplay. The game has minor balance issues but it’s really fun to play and I’ve had amazing matches.

8:40 On the topic of Splash damage for AA missiles/SAMs. SAMs generally have proximity fuses going back to WWII. Hit to Kill didn't exist until Patriot with PAC-3 missiles in the late '90s. I can't find it right now, I thought it was Nike-Ajax, but there's a good video of a missile coming down well off to the side of the test aircraft (F9F or something?). It detonates and the aircraft just combusts from the blast (and shrapnel). So yeah, aircraft flying close together can be taken out by one missile with many proximity detonated AA/SAMs.

Something I never understood about people that defend early access, is that the entire point of early access is to get a feel of what the game is going to be like. A rough idea of what to expect moving forward. If you ignore the problems because "Its early access" then what is the point of early access at all? Sure early access is a rough draft But its not going to be worlds apart from the finished product
@chiken65592 жыл бұрын
Yeah, early access is to get a feel for what game is going to be like. But the thing is - absolute majority of things shown in the video can be fixed. UI can be changed. Balance and prices can be changes. The way grouping works can also be changes. There isn't a single bad fundamental thing in this game that can not be fixed. It's not bad in terms of design, come on, design is literally improved version of Wargame. All the other things are not related to design - they're just how that design was implemented, and that can easily be changes. You shouldn't completely lose all hope for the game if early access it bad, give it a chance to improve.
@RimmyDownunder2 жыл бұрын
There's much that's worse in terms of design, it's not just Wargame. The focus being much smaller in terms of number of units, maps and divisional limitations rather than country limitations. The game feels like the maps are way too small and the units are way too big and too fast. Especially for death row and two ways. The visual effects are far too heavy for the ground though they look cool for the air. The actual effect of most weapons for their visuals is completely out of whack as well - artillery is near useless but looks like its devastating. The UI needs a total redesign. It's easy to say that all of this CAN be done - it can, just like they could totally overhaul the entire game like say Rust did. But they won't. I don't know why you'd put any trust in the team that designed the SD2 UI (a godawful UI) and then designed the awful WARNO one to suddenly get really good at designing UIs - and not to mention to implement not only the UI, but the campaigns, the editors, all the extra divisions, game modes and maps in just 6 months. It's an insane time frame they've set.

They cannot upgrade Wargame. Nor can they legally make a successor. That is the point of WARNO. The point is to restart development, and add new stuff to a new engine. You were quite critical about a lot of things, however, I do not see any of them as problems, that cannot be tweaked down the line. Game speed, unit stats, UI efficiency, bugs, whatnot can all be improved over time. But Physics and Graphics, Networking, handling the amount of units or effects, and very core game rules and abilities, these things have to be ironed out early on. I think the danger of early access is not to say "they will just stop developing it", but more how mature the critics are on it. If a developer is dedicated to a title, they will improve a good base, and they already showed us with Wargame Red Dragon, that even as a small studio who lost the full rights over their own game, they tried to meet player demands.
