Not sure if this is a perfect example but, your car starter motor isn't exactly huge it has a reasonably thick cable to it and it will get hot in excess of 5 seconds on the key. Then your household AC runs all day on those itty bitty wires. But I do remember there was a difference for using 240v AC circuit breaker/fuse on a 12v DC system only reason I remember is because they're cheaper to buy and just allow the difference because I'm a tight ass... Anyway just waiting for the electrician to chime in with a proper explanation..... I'm gonna leave now....

By my estimate, 40A should be doable. No claims of the gum being good/cold afterwards. It failed on the aligator clips, probably due to it having connections on many(few) small points instead of the full width. You would need a different wider flat-ish clamp for higher current. I didn't expect it to be able to handle >10A of current before checking the video.
@WarpedYT5 жыл бұрын
I thought about that too, originally I wanted to cover the whole area of each side of the gum wrapper, but in a practical situation this isn't how you would use it, so I figured the alligator clips covering 50% of each end was pretty realistic, I mean the foil of the gum wrapper at its widest point was getting very hot at 30 amps, I still can't believe I even did a video on this, I was literally blown away at how much amperage does a gum wrapper handled
@erlendse5 жыл бұрын
@@WarpedYT True about simulating a hackjob, not connecting the full width. There is even the case of unrolling the foil and connecting it, with more surface area to cool it. It's also similar to traces on a PCB, just thin coper foil instead of aluminium the current goes in. The traces on a PCB is generally impressively flat.

Do the math: I used the 7pcb website's trace width calculator. Quick online search indicates (from alibaba and such) that the thickness of aluminum in laminated gum wrappers is 5-7 microns. Converting to mils, 5 microns is around 0.2 mils. The dimensions of an opened gum wrapper are around 3 inches in length and 2 inches in width. From the calculator, we see that a 10A input with 0.2 mil trace thickness with ambient temperature 25 and temp rise of 10 with trace length of 3 requires 2000mil or 2 inches, so this gum wrapper in air can handle 10A no problem - consider the cross sectional area of mains carrying circuit boards!
@WarpedYT5 жыл бұрын
Wow that's great information, the one variable though is you don't really know what type of aluminum they are using for the gum wrappers, some of those PCB materials are alloys of some sort to make them more conductive and heat resistant. Nonetheless that was awesome math!
@mailboxesgalore5 жыл бұрын
@@WarpedYT Alibaba lists 8011 alloy, which is supposedly 98% pure aluminum (hopefully very pure since it's food grade, but we're not using Chinesium anyways). If you assume that you're dealing with aluminum alloy that has conductivity of 60% that of copper, making the trace thickness 0.2*0.6=0.12mils to compensate for increased material resistivity, you wind up with approximately 20C temperature rise in steady state conditions in air. If you consider the foil inside an insulator however as actual wires are, the rise could be much much higher and you'd probably run the risk of melting insulation, short circuiting, and burning something down (aka don't wrap the wrappers in used gum and expect them to be safe wires lol).

To anyone wondering when he is showing the “amps” on the meter but the meter says “mV’s” this is because he is using an amp clamp accessory, it has its own 9 volt battery inside it and you plug it into your meter and set it to mV’s and the reading in mV’s on the meter is actually amps.

11:48 How come you say Amperage and the meter readout says "Mv" ?
@WarpedYT5 жыл бұрын
Yeah I'm sorry about that, I should have clarified, so the meter reads milliamps from the clamp amp meter. Basically every whole number is an amp, so if it says to milliamps that equals 2 amps. I'm so used to using the meter, that I forgot to clarify for everyone. But I'm really behind my production schedule so I'm cutting a few corners on these videos. I really wanted to put this gum wrapper through some more extreme tests that I had in mind but unfortunately I didn't have enough time. I am so behind

@@WarpedYT If you make quality videos don't worry about making quantity. The only thing that really wasn't scientific was the last test since there was no load and the setup had the advantage of destroying the wrapper since it used open spark gaps. Ampwise, I'm not really that surprised because once you take in account all the surface area on the gum wrapper it's a fair amount. Would have been nice to include that math, too, but you can't have everything.

Why do you have a 220V Outlet with 100A? And how did you connect the load devices exactly to it?
@superstealth3855 жыл бұрын
Not heating at first means it can handle the power without much resistance

Now we should try paper clips

Measures the resistance and shows ohms and uses a fluke meter but not sure how much electricity the wrapper conducts

Why dont you get an extension chord, with several outlets then simply pull the wires apart and bridge them by the gum. Then by turning the extension on by the on/off switch in the chord itself you'd be closing the circuit thay way you can simply plus2, 3, 5, 6 items at once easily
