Lyrics:
Just for the record let's get the story straight
Me and Uncle Tom were fishin' it was gettin' pretty late
Out on a cypress limb above the wishin' well
Where they say it got no bottom say it take you down to Hell
Over in the bushes and off to the right
Two men talking in the pale moonlight
Sherriff John Brady and Deputy Hedge
Haulin' two limp bodies down to the Waters' Edge
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin oh yea
I know a secret that I just can't tell
They didn't see me and Tom in the tree
Neither one believin' what the other could see
Tossed in the bodies let em sink on down
to the bottom of the well where they'd never be found
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin oh yea
I know a secret that I just can't tell
I know a secret down at Uncle Tom's Cabin
I know who put the bodies in the wishing well

cm_xxvi, It wasn’t supposed to be on the album. The album was finished, and named after this song. The record label told Jani they wanted a catchy hit, so he wrote this in 15 minutes (or so). The label screwed him, promoted this song as the first single, and renamed the album, without informing the band.

Cherry Pie would have made a good b-side song but yeah it's been overplayed to hell and back by every classic rock station. i hate it now too. it's just like a drunk's bar karaoke song, it's not really all that fun to rock out to.
@Andrew_NJ
@Andrew_NJ 3 жыл бұрын
This song was too heavy for radio play, it needed more work in the studio but it was close it just needed the heavy riffs dialed down, they are generic and too loud for no reason, a good lead guitarist would have made the whole song blend much better. The intro and chorus are wasted in between sloppy guitar work. The first time I listened to this I had high hopes until the lead guitar blasted out of no where with a generic overly loud guitar riff that does not fit the song and ruined the transition. It recovers in the chorus but that cannot redeem the song. Unfortunately the record label was right about this.

Always enjoyed that acoustic opening of this song. To me, it showed some great versatility in their song writing. Tried to learn it on guitar as a teenager, but it was a bit more difficult than my amateur skills were able to do. I recently saw a video from a guy I went to high school with, taken the year we graduated, in 1992. It was recorded that summer, and was him playing the Hendrix tune Villanova Junction, featured on the Woodstock album. Seeing that reminded me of how much I would’ve had to put in if I wanted to play this acoustic open. Mf’er was playing Hendrix, making it look easy!

@@38Achilles I agree, the best guitar riffs were in the 70s, you just can't beat Iommi, Blackmore, and page, when it comes to guitar riffing. A lot of the catchiness coming from this song is not from the guitar riffs, but from the vocal harmonies.

This album was originally slated to be named "Uncle Tom's Cabin." All the tracks were laid down and ready to go, but the record company didn't think the title track had enough hook, so they told Jani Lane to come up with an anthem type song. Word has it that he wrote it that night, laid down the track, and always hated it.

+scott gorham In this particular case though, the record label does deserve some of the blame for "Cherry Pie." This album was recorded and mixed, and was called "Uncle Tom's Cabin." It just had to be pressed and distributed. The record label came to Jani and said that the album needed a commercial hook song, which he protested, but the label said the album couldn't be released without it. He went home that night and wrote "Cherry Pie" and the name of the album was changed. He has always regretted writing the song and hates that it is the song that it is associated with Warrant. On the other hand you are correct about music buyers not demanding better quality music. If buyers weren't sucked in by gimmicky songs then the labels wouldn't feel the need to push them. It is a vicious circle, and that ends up pushing bands to flee to independent labels (which often don't have the big money needed for promotion) or for bands to start their own labels (which has been successful for some and not for others). I worked for an independent label distributor and we sold many artists who were then picked up by major labels. And while their sales got bigger, and they got much richer, the quality of the music often suffered and they lost their ability to have creative control. Some artists deal with it, and others don't.
@moviegirl6677
@moviegirl6677 8 жыл бұрын
***** There's an interview on here with Jani Lane where he explains the story behind "Cherry Pie" and how the record label pressured him into writing it and filming the video and then wouldn't release the album unless it was the lead single and the name of the album. It's hard to fight with the record company when under contract, they pull no punches when they don't get what they want. It's pulled from a 4 part documentary called "The History of Heavy Metal." Each part is about 40 minutes long, so it's probably easier to just do a search for "Jani Lane interview" and find it that way.

Then they have the audacity to say grunge music cancelled so called hair metal bands. Which is unbelievably ridiculous cuz that's like saying all horror, action, comedy etc. Will be cancelled cuz only drama movies can take the stage now!! Seriously WTF let the consumer decide what kind of music they want why the fk couldn't hair metal band n grunge music co exist?? There's no logical explanation besides record companies greedy mfn desires
@evenlytoasted
@evenlytoasted 2 жыл бұрын
@@frankfrega1302 the basic explanation is that it was a flicker in time, and within a year or two became outdated. That happens when you form your music around a gimmick. It wont last, it becomes representative of a moment in time, just like grunge only had a moment in the light. And yeah, the industry sucks, but change is the only constant. If you want something like music to last make it more universal or expect time to move past you. Just the way she goes boys.

Kevin Curl I’m almost 20 and this quickly became my favorite track from Warrant after Cherry pie. With most of the music industry being hip hop and rap, I started to think how unfair it is that I had to be born right as the 80s and 90s were ending. I will never get to see a lot of my favorite bands because of this. Not to say that all rock and metal nowadays is bad (which most of it is let’s be real) but these two decades, specifically the 80s, just had that edge that cuts. I’d say the blade has dulled a bit over the years.

Most people only heard the cheesy ballads or radio hits they were forced to write, but to discover the real gems you have to go deeper in their catalogues. This is the song Warrant and Jani Lane should be remembered for, certainly not Cherry Pie.

Considering this song tells with metaphors about how he was raped in the 80's by two guys that were and still are big names in heavy metal, maybe not, maybe yes. Look at his eyes in the end of the song..

@@livingbeing1113 It surely is a great song but the lyrics, they are just pure geniusness. It looks like a one simple story but almost all word choices refer to something else than the obvious storyline. The sad part is that he could have gotten help, speak about it in therapy and might have lived a happier life.

@@ro--M Agreed. Many of these victims of abuse though have their reasons for not speaking out, especially a male frontman like Jani Lane himself. Must've felt truly embarassed and emasculated by that shocking episode, and speaking out against a big rockstar in the scene back then wasn't the easiest choice to make. Due to certain evidence i suspect it was indeed Rob Halford, his manager or Priest's old drummer.

Metal has evolved since then. We've had bands like Dream Theater (who started out in the 80s, but have only gotten better since), Testament, Killswitch Engage, Death, Beyond Creation, Opeth, Jinjer, Within Temptation, Nightwish, Cannibal Corpse, Carcass, etc, since then who have blown the gates of creativity wide open.

Hey the 1950s were real to me, 11-11-1951. And the music for the 60s and 70s had top artist, that put their talent put for all to hear. Go on use KZbin and listen to both decades, sure there are stinkers, but enough to give your ears a satisfying climax.

I saw them that tour in Portland Maine. Janey could truly sing. He pulled a fast one on us too by having everyone's attention on the main stage for encore and then he somehow hopped up on top of something in the rear of the place so the people in the back now had front row for encore, which noone expected. Only band to this day I have seen do that. I still have my Cherry Pie concert shirt. RIP Janey Lane.

This song always made Warrant stand out from among their hair metal/glam rock peers and contemporaries. This sort of bluesy, country rock storytelling song had shades of Lynyrd Skynyrd, one of the true greats. This song alone should have helped Warrant weather the banishment of hair bands with the advent of Grunge and alt-rock. It's a shame it didn't get more mileage.

Well that's the thing about a lot of the Glam Metal dudes, a lot of their good stuff was overshadowed by the ballads that MTV and the record execs wanted and pushed to sell the albums. Prime example of this is Cinderella, everyone knows them as ballad dudes, yet if you dig into their discography, they got some really good hard rockin' stuff.
