Stretching the holding period from 12 months to five years and you’re more likely to make money. Between the brief period of time, only a few five-year periods would have resulted in a loss in the S&P 500. A 10-year holding period performed even better, with returns averaging about 13%-and zero negative returns. So the longer the holding period, the more likely you are to make money. Have a look at these numbers. For example From 1928 to 2021, treasury bonds rose in 76 of those years while stocks rose in 69. This reflects the short-term volatility the stock market experiences despite rewarding investors with higher returns than the bond market over the long term. so you see it is also about the perfect timing
@Stephaniemac-cc8wc5 ай бұрын
Impressive I actually like ❤the way you put this up, but I think a key to building high stock market returns is to let your portfolio weather the periods of price drops due to economic events that are bound to happen over time. Although portfolio values can decrease, investors won't realize an actual loss during these periods unless they sell their investment(s). Simply by holding on to investments during rough market patches, you give it the opportunity to recover to previous levels and grow even more in value with the market values, with the awareness on when to enter or exit a trade loose can be minimized.

When the case of volatility set in one must try and understand the different ways to handle and settle the possible risk that may arise but first understanding the basics and how volatility works can really guide against challenges like this. Therefore Volatility is a statistical measure of the dispersion of returns for a given security or market index. In most cases, the higher the volatility, the riskier the security. Volatility is often measured from either the standard deviation or variance between returns from that same security or market index. From this you can know the exact period to trade on withdrawal from a trader.
@CharlseRansom5 ай бұрын
Looking at the the securities markets, volatility is often associated with big swings in either direction. For example, when the stock market rises and falls more than 1% over a sustained period of time, it is called a volatile market. An asset’s volatility is a key factor when pricing options contracts and many can still make huge gains during these periods of proper decisions are made.
@GabrielKnox-er4yt5 ай бұрын
Nevertheless the properly examined market can be captured and the right task followed to minimize losses. One way to measure an asset’s variation is to quantify the daily returns (percent move on a daily basis) of the asset. Historical volatility is based on historical prices and represents the degree of variability in the returns of an asset. This number is without a unit and is expressed as a percentage. One should take note of it.

Since cash, money market, CDs aren't doing well due to both low rates and now some inflation, people are going to look to financial companies to invest in something such as possibly TIPS or a REIT, which equals more business. Second due to Fed actions and stimulus a lot of people have extra money they might want to invest rather than just spend.

Basically look for companies that have competitive advantages, are scalable, and can pass on the cost of inflation to end users. Examples: Apple, Facebook, Microsoft.

You just have to provide new customers with a license and a copy, and maybe some support. On the other hand if your business is selling ice cream, you can't increase your sales 10x or 100x without spending a lot of extra capital for managing supplies, equipment, ingredients, additional logistics, store fronts, and human resources to serve your product.

1:45 I personally don't think this applies to stocks as inflation decreases the purchasing power of the dollar but in the stock market you're not holding the dollar you're holding shares of a business. Inflation is a direct result of the fed printing money and causes the prices of everything to go up. This also causes the prices of stocks to go up because hypothetically if the fed gave someone infinite money and they started buying millions of shares of AAPL. The people selling those shares would start to think they can raise the amount they ask for when selling a share(I believe this is happening right now in the stock market just on a smaller scale). This is why I think inflation effects stocks because it increases the demand for shares therefor raising the price.

I don't think the current inflation is caused by the fed printing money. We've had ultra low interest rates and unprecedented levels of quantitative easing since 2009, but inflation has only really recently started rising 13 yrs later. I think the real reason for the current surge in inflation is pent up demand in the economy since the covid pandemic and lockdowns etc. Loads of people in well payed jobs, working from home etc during the pandemic, and unable to spend their money. So they saved a lot of money as they couldn't go on their holidays, or out to restaurants, shopping etc etc And then the lockdowns lifted, things returned to normal and those people were able to start spending all that money they had saved, supply and demand. There was suddenly a big demand for many things including oil. Plus energy companies and other businesses, and builders etc started profiteering, ripping people off
@chrishasty14443 жыл бұрын
I think there's a big, obvious, thing you missed here. Even if a non dollar-denominated asset sees no real gains during inflation that's still much better than holding cash and seeing your real purchasing power undermined. In other words, sometimes you have to chose between the lesser of two evils.

Great explanation of inflation’s effects on people. Policy makers trade our long term well being for short term pleasure all the time. You can tell it’s happening when they start harping about “crisis” and “emergency”, or the more recently fabricated “too big to fail”. Starting with the most powerful, in descending order we are given some “stimulus” to smooth out the bumps, they say. But when regular people start getting thousands of dollars/euros/marks in the mailbox, you know savers are going to pay for it all. Soon.

@chaigtin2592 жыл бұрын
@@insofferente I agree. It's best to avoid depending on salary to pay back debt, and establish multiple income streams before taking on any debt. If an investor's income stream is not from a business that has the ability to raise prices in step with inflation (i.e. from a business that has "pricing power"), then even a fixed-interest rate loan would not become easier to pay off. Unpredictable high inflation can even cause problems for well-diversified investors with multiple such income streams because the government may unexpectedly impose excess-profits taxes (while at the same time exacerbating the supply shortage by issuing economic stimulation to consumers).

Instead, they may be earning just a few percentage points in bonds or CDs. That's not a recipe for growing a nest egg that will provide for a comfortable retirement or fund your children's education.

I think simple on this matter. Needs over wants. People will buy needs over wants when money is tight. When it comes down to having food in the house or having an iphone. I don't care how good a tech company runs. Ya it may be great but needs always come first. It's nice having electric in the house, running water and food.

Perhaps but in todays world iPhone or any smart phone has become a necessary commodity. Its a computer, a payment system, banking system, E commerce, a phone, can run a business from them, a calendar/contacts, camera, video, entertainment, texting, emailing, social media, news device…etc…I would argue not to many people in modern times will live without one. Our whole life is on these phones. In digital world we live in has become a need and will be more needed as we continue to advance.

First an error- Inflation makes existing debt _Easier_ to pay off as the real value of the funds owed and interest paid decreases. Main point- Inflation is a crummy time for investors but not nearly as crummy as it is for those who hold cash. Investing, even at a negative real return, is better than holding cash and watching it lose value. It can be a risky time to invest as you point out, some businesses will suffer. On the other hand, changing market conditions *always* brings new opportunities.
@suntzu61229 ай бұрын
Did you get a 20% raise in the 18 months the federal reserve deleted 20% of the value of the dollar? NO????? Then your debt is HARDER to pay off not easier. EVERY stock or thing you would invest in is tied to inflation. Outside of maybe bitcoin. Which is why if you look at the stock market and compare to inflation, stocks might be up 10% in a year.. that inflation is up 9%. Meaning they essentially barely broke even with this joke / scam system.
3 жыл бұрын
Here's what's worrying: Buffett has previously clearly expressed that long periods of low inflation will result in higher real returns for investors. And conversely, in high-inflation periods, real returns for investors can get to very low numbers. But the good news is that the best businesses in the world that can pass on increased costs to customers and some can even increase prices faster than the rate of inflation. Your job is to find them (and then not to overpay) - sound simple but can be very hard.

In time of inflation one should purchase valuable stuff beforehand. (like good businesses, good education, lots of materials and other resources, etc.) But you have to have a mountain of money in advance to spend on valuable stuff, meaning, you need a lot of luck to be born with and live within a very rare set of circumstances. There is also the free access problem called "the free market" that makes most people poor as any free access problem does.

Inflation has to happen, we’ve been in a race to the bottom for 20 or 30 years if not longer, there’s nothing more to cut and the credit cards are maxed out and people aren’t getting paid enough relative to cost. I use the fund to sell SPY puts at strike price $390, $380 and will keep roll up the contract if they don't get assigned. I think equity is the best inflation hedge. Among them especially the growth stocks since they can commend their price better, and can raise money from the market with relatively low cost. Example will be Apple's extremely low bond yields.
