This is not the first time Buffett has sold off his holdings and raised cash. In 1969, he completely closed his partnerships, in part because he could not find any more undervalued companies in which to invest. He told his partners that to get the returns of the first 10-12 years of the partnership, he’d have to change his method and “gamble” and he refused to do that, so he closed up shop. However, before he completely shut his doors, he personally obtained a controlling interest in a horrible textile firm, called Berkshire Hathaway, which he has on occasion called “one of my worst investments.”

At this point, anyone who does NOT see a major financial issue (several, actually) coming isn't paying attention or is full-on denial. Prudence dictates that you conserve what you can within your means, and then prepare to be flexible. Having cash on hand enables you to buy-low what it inevitably happens.
@TimezUp234 күн бұрын
Or the market crashes up and inflation drives that move. Theoretically the federal reserve can print money and this will drive market prices up. However, if the fed truly addresses the inflation issue, it will need to pull currency out of the system and allow interest rates to rise. This will lead to a cash is king scenario and people will sell their holdings and there will be a crash, potentially 80%. The fed is not allowing that to happen so it’s potentially a hyperinflationary situation where the stock market crashes UP and not down. If the fed did pull currency out of the system and respect the dollar, people will see valuations of everything crash and the value of the dollar go UP. Warren buffet said cash is not king and is a bad investment, especially if it is being inflated into oblivion

Warren Buffet is probably the most venerated investor of all time. However, i do find it funny how most investors quote Buffet religiously, but hardly anyone actually mimics what he actually does. Buffet isn't prescient or clairvoyant. He can't see into the future. Buffet's super power is patience. Buffet only swings at his pitch. His cash position, is only an indication that nothing is currently undervalued. So consequently he is sitting on an inordinate amount of cash. But it doesn't mean an impending crash is on the horizon.

After the crash of 2008, the NASDAQ recovered completely by end of 2010 and surged from there. The S&P 500 recovered by Q2 of 2013. The "Lost Decade" of 2000-2010 was only lost (meaning $0 gains) if you held what you had and invested $0 additional. Dollar cost averaging was key. How exciting to be a young investor today! I personally love the NASDAQ, it can fall hard, but comes back harder and faster!

In spite of how everyone is frightened and calling the crash, there is already an excessive amount of demand waiting to absorb it, which is another reason it's less likely to happen that way. This forecast was not made in 2008, at least not by the general public, as I will explain below. The ownership rate peaked in 2004, according to the other comment. We reached a peak in the second quarter of 2020 and are currently at the median level. From 2008 to 2012, it fell by 3%, and in the second quarter of 2020, it dropped from 68 to 65. how can a young man with 200K survive?

With all that cash BRK.B is now a market hedge. "The end of a speculative boom can be inevitable but not predictable. Unsustainable things can last a long time. Identifying something that can’t go on forever doesn’t mean that thing can’t keep going for years. Years and years and years. Unsustainable trends have life support if enough people think they’re true, and once people believe something’s true it gets hard to convince them it’s not. Well... In my view, it doesn't make much sense to look at an average when you know that 7 - 8 large companies make up a large part of the "average" and the value set is unimaginably high. We see the same in Denmark, where Novo gives some nice average values. If you take Novo out of that equation, you get a completely different picture.

@@thetubeshows Minors cannot enter into contracts, be it buying an insurance policy or entering into a contract to own property. That's the law and no way a 11 year old kid owned and rented out a farm. Also, Howard Buffett, Warren's dad, was a stock broker who founded his own brokerage firm and served as a multi-term US Congressman representing Nebraska. You are referring to Warren's grandparents, Ernest P. Buffett & Henrietta Duvall Buffett, who ran a grocery store. By the time Warren was 11, his dad hooked him up with free trades and financed him capital to buy his first share. Think about it, even as early as the late 90s, Merrill Lynch was still charging $30 commissions a trade by phone with a broker before E-Trade came along, so you think an 11 year old kid is going to afford 1942 stock broker commission? It isn't like it is today where you get commission free trades. Warren's dad totally helped him get started. I'm not saying Warren isn't a genius, totally acknowledged it with my original post, but let's be honest with ourselves here. Most kid his age was shinning shoes for a nickel during that era. You'd had to have money already and be connected to a broker to get in on the market as a kid in 1942.

@@thetubeshows First, children cannot enter into legal contracts (i.e. insurance policies, sale of land, etc), no way he owned a farm at 11. (2) Warren's father owned his own brokerage firm and was a 4-term congressman representing Nebraska, you have mistaken that as it was his grandparents that ran a grocery store. (3) Given his dad owned a brokerage firm, his dad helped him acquired his first share (by providing capital and helping him acquire the share, as children in 1942 at 11 years old did not typically have access to equity markets). In 1942, when Warren bought his first share of stock for $114, many Americans were encouraged to invest in war bonds to support WW2 efforts rather than stocks, further limiting stock market participation. So, you mean to tell me that Warren as an 11 year old didn't get help from his dad to access the markets? They didn't have online brokerage accounts back then and children can't just go and open an after tax brokerage account. He had help from his dad that owned a brokerage firm and gave him capital to invest.

Thanks for the educative video.... With Trump's presidency, economic shifts are expected to be significant, especially given the current recession and the potential impact of future rate cuts. Although rate cuts might not boost inflation as hoped, they may lead banks to further restrict consumer and corporate lending, contributing to a deflationary period for various assets. This environment could result in declining stock values, retail and housing sales, and rising unemployment due to layoffs. For investors, a diversified portfolio especially with stocks and cryptocurrencies offers some protection, serving as a hedge amid volatility. Both long- and short-term trading strategies can help manage risks, providing stability as markets adjust. Excellent video. I agree 100% with Buffett and yourself; no one can predict a crash or major downturn, precisely. But what you can do is recognize when all the conditions are in place for a certain market move, and then position yourself accordingly. This is what Buffett is doing. He doesn't know when there will be a major downturn, but he's certtain there is one coming. Micheal Burry did the same with his big short. He saw that conditions in the mortgage market were unsustainable, so positioned accordingly. But he had to wait nearly 3 years for the crash. His reward was a huge paycheck. Everyone knows a crash is coming, but no one knows how long and deep this "trump slump" is going to last. The Hoover crash lasted 25 years until Eisenhower injected massive Infrastructure spending, healthcare spending, and added SSI Disability to Social Security. The Reagan crash lasted 6 years, and cost George H.W. Bush his re-election because everyone blamed him for Reagan's incompetence (Bush told us in 1980 it was "VOODOO ECONOMICS"). The Bush/Cheney crash lasted 5 years, and Obama couldn't get more infrastructure and domestic spending past McConnell's Senate, and the Middle Class still hasn't recovered. I can't afford to lose everything for 5, or 6, or 25 years waiting for the markets to bounce back, so I've already cashed out.

I mean, investing that much in a company that is losing money is just insane amount of risk.

@@ju_p9011 I did something similar, I put a lot into the oil sector during COVID and figured I’d ride it out with small dividends, then Russia invades Ukraine and oil sector triples. Diversified back out in 2022 and the S&P then goes hog wild exiting the COVID shutdown. Pulled more than half out recently, maybe 6 months too early, and am waiting like Warren.

These are very valuable rules for anybody who wants to get rich. Unfortunately, most people who will watch this video will not really be able to apply the principles. We may not want to admit, but as Warren Buffett once said, investing is like any other profession-- it requires a certain level of expertise. No surprise that some people are losing a lot of money in the bear market, while others are making hundreds of thousands in profit. I just don't know how they do it. I have about $89k now to put in the market.

Understanding personal finances and investing will most likely lead to greater financial independence. By being knowledgeable about money and investing, individuals can make informed decisions about how to save, spend, and invest their money. I know someone who made over $350k in this recession influenced market, but to the best of my knowledge, it was through a financial advisor.

True, initially I wasn't quite impressed with my gains, opposed to my previous performances, I was doing so badly, figured I needed to diverssify into better assets, I touched base with a portfolio-advisor and that same year, I pulled a net gain of 550k...that's like 7times more than I average on my own.

I wonder if the Buffet indicator accounts for the number of people investing in the market, and the total amount of money. I'm not a pro investor or economists, but I would imagine that might have some effect on things as it's might be a type of inflation? Also, does inflation factor into the amount of cash Buffet keeps, so 2008 cash value is different than 25?
@gentronseven4 күн бұрын
It's not difficult to understand why if you think about the profits of a business as it's yield. Buffett has the same percentage of cash based on the value of Berkshire Hathaway, so 25% of Berkshire Hathaway's asset portfolio. The thing that needs to be adjusted for is interest rates during the market cycle, the lower the interest rate is the higher PE a company can have and still be a worthwhile investment. That's why PEs have climbed towards their current levels since 2000 - Interest rates were 35% higher in 2000. The reason for this, is that at a 40 PE, Apple is yielding about 2.6% a year in profits. This might be a good investment if interest rates remained permanently at 0% because 2.6% > 0. If the interest rates are going to remain consistently higher for the next several decades, as most people expect, why would anyone hold a 40 PE company at 2.6% returns, when they could hold a treasury with 0 risk yielding 3% or more? A company's expected profits are the same as the yield, so if interest rates remain higher like from 1940-1980, we're going to see PEs fall back to the historical ~20 averages rather than averaging in the 30s and 40s like we've seen the last two years. So even barring any type of financial breakdown, the valuation of Apple and other stocks Buffett is selling can't be considered reasonable to hold. And the S&P is market cap weighted, so this mismatch in return expectations will likely be a very serious problem for the index going forward. It's all about business yield expectations vs treasuries.

theres not gonna be a crash any time soon, as long as there are still trillions of dollars floating around in the system and QE till infinity, the DOW could get to 100,000 or more, it will just be worth US$ that are worth less and less of course, the only way stocks in the US will crash is if they raise % rates from like 4% to 7-9% but they wont do it as the US will get into a depression, the FED and US govt would rather have inflation than a depression, inflation eats away the govt own debt, we could get a 5% or 10% correction of course but no way we will see a 30% drop any time soon, im still buying dividend stocks when i can and re investing to make passive income.

Nobody knows what the market will do. S&P P/E ratio is higher than 10 years ago because companies are growing faster than before. It’s common sense.
@IKilledTheDodo4 күн бұрын
The P/E doesn’t work that way. It’s price-to-earnings ratio, meaning the price of the stock compared to company’s earnings are higher now than 10 years ago. Companies might be growing faster now, but for your argument to make sense the P/E should be the same or lower than 10 years ago. The reason the P/E is so high is that people are flooding the market with cash, often because they believe that earnings will grow significantly in the future, aka speculating.

No one knows what will happen to the market in the short term, long term it is generally designed to go up. However, when we are on a massive bull run like the past few years, I believe a 70-30 or 60-40 ratio (stock to bond/cash) is good so that one can buy the dip by dollar cost averaging, perhaps they are thinking about this. He (or they) is not the only investor that does this, it's a common knowledge to all the investment firms. But like I said, you cannot time the market unless you are from the future.

I think Buffett sees sustained, long-term, higher inflation (not necessarily hyperinflation) and higher long-term interest rates as the federal government inflates its debt away. This will hit consumers hard and lead to a reduction in both consumer discretionary spending as well as bank lending, coupled with an increased level of defaults on credit cards and mortgages, which would adversely affect the profitability of banks. This would explain why he’s reducing his position in Apple and liquidated pretty much all of his bank holdings. It also explains why he’s doubled down on Occidental Petroleum because of the energy sector’s ability to ride the inflationary wave and Occidental’s policy of growing by acquisition rather than drilling new wells and returning capital to shareholders in the form of dividends and share buybacks.
@V2RocketScientist3 күн бұрын
He's not selling because "the market" is high AND he expects it to drop. He's selling those specific shares because they're over-priced and there just happens to not be any other good deals out there so money is on the side-lines waiting for that buying opportunity. Also, bonds are high so it only makes sense to "hold cash" because of the high return for little risk vs low return for high risk on the equities.

I’ll attempt an interpretation. In my opinion, Warren Buffett foresees massive changes in international markets. This is evidenced by the sale of American stocks like Apple and Bank of America. It looks like a lack of confidence in the dollar, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he used the proceeds to buy gold or yuan. Buffett recognizes what’s happening in the market and the significant political tensions. From a geopolitical perspective, the rapid rise of China, which has caught the U.S. off guard, poses a threat to the USD as the global reserve currency. And as we know, the entire American financial system is built on controlling the printing of the world’s reserve currency. Meanwhile, the U.S. no longer has the same level of military power projection to maintain the order established after World War II. Furthermore, the U.S. also realizes that free trade no longer benefits them but rather China. China is reaping the most benefits because it has adapted excellently and, most importantly, has upward momentum and the greatest growth potential. The U.S. must therefore respond. They want to change the very system they created. But on the other hand, they no longer have the strength to build a new system where the U.S. is the sole beneficiary. It’s time for a multipolar economic world. The China-Russia tandem is too strong to be subdued. Hence, Russia must be weakened with a prolonged war in Ukraine, ideally involving Europe as well. The weaker Russia and Europe are, the lower the chances of China forming an alliance that completely dethrones the U.S. The global situation is highly dynamic. What new order will emerge? That remains unknown, so it’s better to sell stocks of companies and institutions likely to suffer the most from the upcoming deglobalization and weakening of the dollar (Apple, Bank of America).
