Something that separates Warrior from similar shows is that it looks at EVERY aspect of fighting, marital arts, and combat sports. Things like size, endurance, environment, weapons, technique, and conditioning all play key factors in the fights and shows the characters either using them or failing to use them in their defeats or victories. Just because you know kung-fu doesn't mean you're going to automatically win. Ah Toy for example was nearly killed because her two opponents were three times her size and she didn't have her sword. And when she won she took a serious beating that would have resulted in her death anyway if Mai Ling hadn't helped her. Here, Ah Sahm has Leary beaten in technique and speed, but Leary is still a big, durable motherfucker who just tanks everything Ah Sahm throws at him. Leary also fought smart, closing the distance between them and making sure Ah Sahm can't use his typical kicks. Even when Ah Sahm starts to target Leary's knuckles it's still not enough and the fight devolves down to who can take the most punishment. And then finally Ah Sahm manages to win, but even then it clearly took everything he had. E This is an incredible show that displays skill very well without making its lead characters untouchable beacons of kung fu. They still take major damage and have to learn from their opponents both before and during the fight to win. It DESERVES another season. Hell it deserves a full five season order, there's so much more to tell.

I completely agree bro! Not just in the fighting though, but the incredible plot and storyline. We have 3 different tongs, the irish, the police, politicians, all bleeding into each others world (now more so then ever) and things are just pumping up! If this show doesn't get another season while Cobra Kai does, I don't even know what to think of the general tv audience anymore. Not even trying to be rude, it's just a travesty something like that or stranger things gets millions more views then a beautifully crafted series like this.

Don't forget that bare knuckle fighting and Pugilism is the style Leary is using. In the first episode in Season one as Leary tells his tale of experiences at his bar there is a clear portrait hanging to his right side depicting two pugilists. The creators of the show have done amazing job in researching the styles of fighting. In Season 2 Episode 6 there are also many different styles shown. This is a homage to Bruce Lee as he was known to study many martial arts from around the world.

@@JesusLittleBear Cobra Kai started off with a massive fan base from The Karate Kid trilogy, has a PG rating, and obviously costs far less to film than Warrior. That’s why it’s so underrated and most people don’t know about it.

What I absolutely love about this fight is the difference between this and the last season 1 fight with Li Yong. In s1 Ah Sahm didn't have the same conviction that Li Yong had. Li Yong was fighting for Mai Ling who he loves, and Ah Sahm was fighting for the Hop Wei yes but his loyalties were conflicted with them and his sister. But in this fight, Ah Sahm is essentially fighting for Chinatown. He has the conviction and something to fight for (just like the guy who owned the saloon in Nevada hoped he would find) and that gave him the strength to win because he's found a purpose that he didn't have against Li Yong. ANYWAYS I LOVE THIS SHOW SO MUCH.

So he's going for a different kind of power now. Also people are jumping to conclusions about Leary's character. He spat on the Chinese for two seasons as being inferior and subhuman. Only to be comprehensively bested by one in hand-to-hand prizefighting. The one art he respects above all. This event has shaken the foundation of his beliefs. As a Chinese person, I really empathize with O’Leary / the Irish and how they relate to how some contemporary minority groups view Asian-Americans as “rivals” or a model minority. The community means well and they just want jobs, but their insecurities at being “replaced” by recently arrived communities is often intentionally magnified by populists who seek to divide minorities against each other. This scene may show Ah Sam triumphing over O’Leary in the fighting pit, but on the greater scale, both immigrant communities are losing because they’re expending their energies beating the crap out of each other. Meanwhile, the puppet masters at the top tug their strings and the show goes on…
@lamontcranston17162 жыл бұрын
Nah man the Irish back then were wild. They were more of the kid that gets beat at home bullying at school. Look up how they acted during the draft day riots. Setting a black orphanage on fire, is more than “we just want jobs.” Thank god they got all the kids out the back. It was a lot of “I might be the lowest version of white, but I’m still above blacks and Asians and they’re gonna know that.” I would say your assessment is closer to black/Asian than it is Irish/Asian. The racial purity aspect isn’t there with blacks and Asians. That tension is due to cultural differences (blacks are more likely to buck an unfair hierarchy, and cause trouble, Asians seem to tend to have a: “get along to get along” vibe) what the media shows, slights, both real and perceived, and a very keep to your own vibe on both sides. Which Is wild to me, because black and Asian culture mixes so well, elevating and enriching both, and the cultural exchange is so apparent ,If you didn’t know any better you’d think we were best friends. I do think that Asians and blacks in harmony is a real problem to the elites. It’s the same with blacks and Hispanic people. Legendary team ups. Makes me sad thinking about the missed opportunities some times.

In addition to all the compliments everyone already has for this show's fighting, I would ALSO like to note that if you pay attention to the specific moves being used both by Chinese and white combatants, the combat styles are historically accurate. Many of the tenets of modern western boxing didn't exist yet, and you see that reflected in Leary's style. Likewise, a lot of the stuff you see in modern Asian martial arts, and all of the innovations from styles such as those of Ip Man and Bruce Lee, do not yet exist. Not only is the fight choreo here amazing, but they got it historically accurate to the history of martial arts as well.

The fear on Leary's face as he realises that last punch stopped his heart for a second is easily my favourite part of this. It's like a combination of existential dread from knowing that could've been it as he realises that Ah-Sahm isn't finished yet. The following POV shot as Ah-Sahm charges is the cherry on top. I haven't read Bruce Lee's books (though this show is making me consider it) but I'm already picturing how this near death experience is going to change him for season 3. A real challenge for a show like this is that they can't just cast for acting talent, they need to also find people who can fight competently and make it look good. Some of the best classic Jackie Chan/Jet Li etc. movies would cast champion kickboxers (Benny 'The Jet' or Billy Chow) and former martial arts champs in villain roles so they could choreograph intricate fight scenes. With how character focused this show is, they need and somehow got the best of both worlds for everyone in the show.

@TarkusLives3 жыл бұрын
I mean are we watching the same fight? Ah Sahm definitely didn't "destroy him" It was close as hell. If Leary hadn't been a showboat (similar to what cost Ah Sahm the big fight in season one) he would have won. I also don't think Leary is the type to turn down a rematch. Regardless it was a great fight scene and final episode. Also just as a final note, I'm not hating on Ah Sahm at all, love his character and the show. Just saying that he definitely didn't "Destroy him".

@@TarkusLives Ah Sham wasn't go full out until about half way Imo. You can tell he pulls everything he learned this season at the end of the fight. It was all AL Sham
@TarkusLives3 жыл бұрын
@@smolek898 Once again, it's like we're watching a different fight. No one in this show wants to be hit multiple times by Leary, what the man lacks in technique he definitely makes up for in raw power. Obviously Ah Sahm deserved the W, but do you see the condition he's in by the end of the fight? The man is beat to hell. Once again calling this a one way fight, or saying that he "destroyed" Leary is just wrong. The only thing I'm arguing here is that it was a one-sided fight or that Leary got "Destroyed". He was up the next day at a city council meeting. After the big fight in season one (Where ah Sahm got destroyed) he was unable to get out of bed for at least a week or so. Still a great fight and I can't wait to see season 3. Honestly because of Leary and Ah Sahms back and forth/on-screen chemistry I wouldn't be surprised to see them have to team up for a fight scene against a bigger bad at some point in the seasons to come.
@smolek8983 жыл бұрын
@@TarkusLives I agree on a few fronts but honestly if Ah Sham used his head instead of his heart and kept his distance this fight would be over in 3 minutes. Leary excels when you get close to him. Ah Sham didn't care. He had rage mode.
@TarkusLives3 жыл бұрын
@@smolek898 You can't say "oh if he did this it would have been over quickly" How he fights (With his heart or his head) is how he fights. Its his strength and weakness. He didn't keep his distance, and so the fight wasn't one sided, and Leary didn't get "destroyed". Using hypotheticals doesn't make your point more valid. This isn't a discussion on how the fight could have gone. If we do that, Leary easily "could" have won the fight the first (second? I'm not rewatching) time Ah Sahm was knocked down for a bit and Leary chose to showboat. He "could" have just walked over and beat Ah Sahm into unconsciousness while he was down. See? That does nothing to prove my point. The only thing that's being argued here is that the fight wasn't one-sided. From what we see on screen, and how the fight actually went, without throwing in "well he could have fought like this" It wasn't a one sided fight. Ah Sahm deserved the W and got it, but calling this fight one sided is just wrong.

Leary is stronger and punch harder, but Ah Sahm is the more complete fighter, able to use both punches and kicks to match Leary's strength. Ah Sahm tried to go toe to toe and blow for blow and lost that part of the fight. However, when Ah Sahm started fighting like Floyd Mayweather/hit and avoid being hit against a slowed down Leary, the fight was over! A Rematch: Ah Sahm being the more complete fighter/martial artist should beat him again after learning how to best fight against Leary's hands during the last minutes of this fight. However, you know they are not going to make it that easy.

And even after eventually losing, having his knuckles shattered and his heart temporarily stopped, Leary (spoiler!) shows up for a city council meeting just a couple of scenes later, looking little the worse for wear aside from a few bruises.
