This is really strange to me, because about a month ago I started working out after a long period of being primarily sedentary, with the only heavy thing that wasn't immediately necessary I could find; an old sledgehammer. I started doing stuff like the curl here, and the splitting wood thing, just because I could really feel it in my biceps and shoulders. Kinda weird how you can accidentally discover something that's been around for so long, and it turns out you totally weren't special or anything. Just kinda blows my mind.

I found the steel mace after using an old sledge hammer too. I decided to search and see if anybody's written a sledge hammer workout and I then found the steel mace

I have Kshyatriya ancestry.In India our ancestors used to fight.The main principle of mace work out was to improve endurance of back,arm and fore arm. Training with mace makes handling of sword easier as you will find it light compared to mace. My great grandfather fought Britishers with 12 kg sword on horse back.The Akhada system is very popular in Rural North India.These trainings give strength,agility simultaneously.

Thank you for acknowledging the source so honestly. Though id like to say that wootz steel is from India. So, there has been a long tradition of fighting with metal maces. It’s simply cheaper to use a stick with a weight for the common village akhada/ open air gym.
@njsteere9 жыл бұрын
A sledgehammer will work fine for all these exercises, you dont need a dedicated mace. That said, I just sprang for an Onnit mace and it's great. The thicker bar is good for your grip strength, and the longer handle lets you vary the challenge. It's also knurled like a barbell, very useful. Either way, these exercises are going to make you sweat while building functional strength.

I have tested many different objects (my favorite substitute being large wrenches for tractors), and for the most part yes you could just use a sledgehammer. I find the advantage of the Onnit mace is it is balanced at the weighted end, where a sledgehammer has two heavy faces causing the resisting force to be a little lopsided. Additionally, while 'splitting wood' a sledgehammer can hit on an angle, causing it to rotate in your hands. If you're dead set on holding on, it may cause injury. TLDR; A 10 lb sledgehammer around here is anywhere between $20 - $40. The Onnit 10 lb mace is $40. Both work, the latter is designed specifically for working out.
