Warriors Ball Movement

The Golden State Warriors won 67 games during the regular season. They finished in the top 10 of all-time highest point differentials (they seemed headed for a top 5 or 6 finish but lost some steam down the stretch). Steve Kerr didn’t win Coach of the Year (hats off to Coach Bud), but 67 wins (including a 39-2 home record) is very impressive, especially for a rookie coach.
This may or may not be common knowledge but Steve Kerr won 4 straight NBA titles from 1996-1999. He’s also worked with some impressive coaches in Lenny Wilkens, Phil Jackson, Gregg Popovich & Mike D’Antoni (as the GM in Phoenix). That’s just Steve. That’s not even including the impressive resumes of his coaching staff (Alvin Gentry, Ron Adams, Luke Walton, Jarron Collins) or any of the myriad of ex-players and coaches he worked with as a broadcaster.
Point being, he’s has a wealth of experience to draw from having been on or around so many great teams. One thing that those teams surely have in common is ball movement. The willingness to share the rock and become better than just five guys on a court. To become a whole, greater than the sum of its parts. With players moving in relative unison, and the ball swinging and zipping all over the court, it seems hard to stop this team. Mike D’Antoni used to say “the ball finds energy,” and when the ball moves around like Kerr and his crew want it to, the energy is practically unstoppable. Plus you get to see the weave (multiple dribble handoffs out on top) a whole bunch. Who doesn't love the weave?
I should note, none of these plays are from the playoffs, so all this fun is from the 82 game run.

It's actually inspired by Mike D'Antoni Kerr was the Sun's GM back in the seven seconds or less days

+Ron Mexico Yes and no. I'd say Kerr was influenced some by his time as the Suns GM, but also, Gentry was his lead assistant, so it borrows heavily from that time too. Gentry and Kerr are both Pop disciples as well, plus Steve also clearly uses a few Triangle sets to initiate...so it's a Triangle/Motion/Spread PnR & Drag hybrid.

Evin Gualberto Fair enough, but something to consider is that Kerr only played for a couple seasons with the Spurs in the late nineties/early 2000's when their offense was pretty much just Tim Duncan and David Robinson post ups
@EvinGualberto
@EvinGualberto 8 жыл бұрын
+Ron Mexico not entirely...it was a double post or high-low action but it's still Motion offense. I agree that it was way more bare bones when Kerr was there, but the fundamentals of a motion offense are still in place. Sure, the Motion Weak or Strong of the 13 or 14 Spurs is predicated on a lot more movement, but it's Steve's relationship with Pop that should be talked about..I'm sure when he was doing broadcasting for Spurs games, Kerr would at least pick Greg's brain a little.

The Spurs single-handedly brought back the old-era style of basketball from the 50's-80's. The 90's - late 2000's was the ISO-Ball era. All about giving the ball to your best player and letting them go 1-on-1 to create something or off the PnR to try and attack. Popovich brought back the PnR-Motion Offense that involves moving the ball at a high rate to create space and have the defenders trying to catch up to the ball at all times, as well as create mismatches off of switches and then trying to exploit that mismatch. It's a copy-cat league and other teams have started doing it as well over the pas 4 or 5 years. Notice how the Hawks and Warriors both have started running the same offense, and they're both coached by disciples of Popovich? It's good to see. Much better and more effective than ISO-ball.

+Brandon Van True, but there are plenty of Triangle influences as well. The corner option of the Triangle is one of the most obvious components. Both Kerr and Pops have also stated that they were heavily influenced by the mid 2000s Suns. Mike D'Antoni's spread pick and roll, and the myriad drag screens, or pitch to trailing big, which initiates both Motion Weak and Strong, should be recognized too.

Steve Kerr's knowledge of the game really translated with everything he did after his retirement from the game as a player. When he was an analyst for NBA TV, it was so much fun listening to him break down players and the game, especially on Open Court. I will say though that he has had two of the greatest coaches in the last 25 years and has won championships with both. So it's understandable for him to have such an acute knowledge on the Triangle and PnR offense, and you can see how that translates to getting the best out of his players.

This is the best offense I've ever seen. Although I was a fan of the bulls and lakers back in the day when Phil Jackson was coaching and running the triangle offense because it was a very good offense with MJ and Kobe. But I am impressed by coach Steve Kerr because he has done a great job on making this warriors team play great basketball. Even though they lost 3-1 lead in finals against the cavs last year I'm still a huge fan of them hoping that they would win it again with KD.

I bet the Sacramento Kings from their Greatest Show on Court years (1998-2004) are seething in jealous envy at both the San Antonio Spurs and Golden State Warriors. Those two teams took their brand of unselfish, team basketball the Kings made in their heyday and made it even better. Also, those two teams added a defensive identity to go along with their own brands of unselfish, team basketball which led them to NBA World Championships.

@ smith lovy. Kerr is the head coach, he has the final say on both offence and defence. He runs the timeouts and is the one who talks to the players. I guess Popovoich and Phil Jackson get to much credit, lets just give it to there assistants. Yes Alvin was the offensive co-ordinator, but in the end it is Kerr who is the main communicator to the players and decides substitiutions, minutes,combinations "in game"..so if any coaches need to get the most credit it is the head coach.

@EvinGualberto
@EvinGualberto 9 жыл бұрын
JAN2MARS Definitely would not have won a ring. In the weak east, they could've made the playoffs but it also depends a bit on his coaching staff and the personnel changes they would've been able to make. Remember Gentry is an offensive genius and Ron Adams is a defensive guru. I'd say given a decent roster and a healthy Melo, the playoffs would be reasonable for Kerr's Knicks
@MrYoumitube

+smith lovy Even if he didn't create this offense, he still the one who overlooked the team, offense and defense, and motivated the players to work together to win. The year before that with Jackson was horrible, they were really close of trading D lee, Bogut and Thompson. I glad steve was our coach. and you're right about Gentry's, he is a great offensive coach, and will be greats with the Pelican. Im looking forward to this upcoming season.

Spurs have more play types than Warriors.I just seen many Screens Here in GS.
@IanLEAU
@IanLEAU 7 жыл бұрын
That's because they tailored that PnR motion offense for perimeter play. They don't have post options, or at least any good ones. GS don't have any decent post players this season either so we'll probably see KD as an option for attacking the basket. He'll probably be setting more picks this season with Draymond.
