Steph really improved his defense. He was always trying to improve his defense and that improvement showed in this playoffs. That's what made him great. At 34 years old he's still yearning for improvement.

The average fan will see a guy like Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown backing down Curry and shooting over him and automatically think Steph can't play defense. But defense is so much more than how well you guard a guy who's got a physical advantage over you. It's about keeping opponents in front of you, knowing when to help out, switching and fighting through screens, anticipation that leads to deflected balls and steals, etc.

It’s all built around draymond. Thinking Basketball made a video around 6 months ago which goes into deep analysis of the warriors defense. He concluded that draymond is the anchor for the warriors. Also, even though the warriors defense has always been elite, they stepped it up this year. That’s why even with their worst offense in all the years other than 2015, they still dominated the playoffs.

I actually think draymond is the most valuable player to the warriors right now, because poole can somewhat fill that steph role already (averaged 25/5/5 when steph was out) meanwhile they have nobody who can come anywhere close to what draymond can do. The biggest concern for the warriors dynasty to continue is for the warriors to find someone to take over draymonds role.

What people don’t realize is that the warriors defensive schemes are built around draymond. He is the anchor. He is the system on defense, the same way steph is the system on offense. He is the second most valuable player on golden state, and has been for years, including when KD was here.

Its not like that. Every player in NBA, especially guards, know how quick Steph is. He can't beat physics and his body size and reach limitations (because he is not a big guy by NBA standards). But he can hustle on D, he can position himself on passing lanes and he did it really well. You don't have to have Looney Tunes arms to steal, you just need to know where and when will the ball go.

Best Draymond Statline was in the game 2 finals blowout. Credit to Draymond for always racking up stats that do NOT show up. - Marcus Smart 4 fouls and 2pts. Early exit - Al Horford 2pts. Early exit - Jaylen Brown with his feelings hurt. 2nd half exit. That's about 30+ PTS given up right there. Draymond was being a MENACE in that game. If you're not threading ( the needle ), you not tryin.

Great video. People tend to over-value just the box score and look at who scored the most points. Some people say Curry did a carry job because of his point totals. Im not saying Curry did not have masterclass on offense but the warriors team put on a defensive clinic and it took the entire team effort to make it. Lets appreciate good defense more

FYI, When Jackson was Warriors coach he's instilled a defensive mindset. Warriors have been a very good to elite D for 9-10 years with the exception of '20 when injuries plagued team. Don't believe me? .... go on ESPN and filter team D from 2013-present. Warriors pretty much were either among the best or top 6 in all defensive categories. Also to note, Curry's defense is better than average ('21 was his best individual showcase) he was never a bottom guard defender. His D only gets overshadowed by his scoring and shooting skills. Oh, and that 2015 and 2016 Warrior D was nasty.

2022 warriors series and defense... someone had really done their film work on different players' tendencies for spin dribbles - the double downs that deflected and recovered steals were really high. Some of it was just good solid basic defense, but some of it was someone, somewhere building up some intel they shared with the players. You could see them just biding their time and then pouncing, beyond what happens in regular season. Tendencies were tracked and targeted extensively.

What's interesting about the Warriors Celtics match-up was that the Warriors scored between 100 to 108 points every game. They were never under 100 nor ever over 110. Boston scored 116 and 120 in their wins, and couldn't break 100 points in their 4 losses. Boston never had a great offense to begin with, and once the Warriors got used to their tendencies and weaknesses, put the clamps on and never looked back.
