Muyang Cheng actually you’re wrong. Battleships started to show up as a term in the 1880’s to 1890’s. It started with ironclad battleships, but then it turned to battleships. However, it wasn’t until the British Majestic-Class Pre-Dreadnought Battleship that the term actually took major flight. I know a thing or two about these things. Just saying.

Nice video, although I would have preferred the title "Warship Length Comparison", since ship size is generally measured by displacement. There is a reason why the Yamato is considered the largest battleship of all time, despite being shorter than the Iowas. Same with Enterprise and her younger cousins, longer, but lighter and therefore smaller in size.

Thank you for your feedback and insight! I appreciate your point about ship size being typically measured by displacement rather than length. @hickspaced Tell that to WW1. Also, German Battleships did have succesful operations in WW2.
@Frenchfrys17
@Frenchfrys17 4 жыл бұрын
@hickspaced Yet the German U boats sunk a grand total of ZERO British Battleships. They were still very useful for any naval operation that required staying power. Much more so than heavy cruisers. Most naval vessels are gone from one torpedo. Battleships on the other hand generally require an entire operation to take them out.
@Frenchfrys17
@Frenchfrys17 4 жыл бұрын
@hickspaced Devoting more resources to other projects does always translate to an equal amount of total gain. Japans ability to improve their army was not just limited by resources but also by their engineering ability and experience. The usefulness of Battleships did not die with the introduction of the Aircraft Carrier. It was made more niche, sure, but conventional Battleships did not become obsolete until the introduction of Ballistic Missiles and especially nuclear weapons. Yet many people can also argue that these newer missiles are also making Aircraft carriers obsolete.

Jeez, if you took a US Navy supercarrier to Trafalgar...even without aircraft, you could destroy the combined French, Spanish, and British navies just by ramming!
@CountScarlioni
@CountScarlioni 4 жыл бұрын
Easily. Their armour is invincible to the guns of the era, and even an aircraft carrier could run rings around any slow, lumbering sailing warship. But that unfair fight potential became apparent all the way back in 1859-1860 when France and Britain launched their first ironclad warships. In one fell swoop the navies of the world were reduced to two ships - and a load of floating matchwood for target practice!
@oldfrend

Even a carrier's defensive guns would be more than a match for Nelson's wooden navy. Imagine a CIWS loaded with incendiary shells lighting up all those wooden ships

no you couldn't lol. an aircraft carrier is weak without it's fleet. it would just get boarded and taken over. let's be honest

@@SirZanZa you're a dumbass. how's a ship of the line going to board a ship more than 3 times its length, twice its height and 3 times its speed. not to mention a ship's complement of 5000+ sailors, marines, and a platoon of navy SEALs with modern weaponry? even if it could somehow stick some grappling hooks as the carrier passed by, they'd either get ripped off, or the ship would be dragged underwater by the mass and speed of much larger ship.

I think there should be a comparison like this, but based on tonnage displaced instead of just length. Missouri is ranked after the Yamato in this list, but the Yamato is clearly the larger ship (in terms of mass).

you misclassed the HMS Victory, It's actually a first-rate ship of the line which was basically a battleship during the early/late 1700s to the early/late 1800s before the first Ironclads arrived on scene. A gunship was a lot smaller, lighter and faster than the Victory for example: USS Alliance in 1875

Aircraft carriers made them obsolete
@jonnyrawket8158
@jonnyrawket8158 3 жыл бұрын
Battleships became obsolete due to the fact smaller ships can do what 1 could do, but spread over a far wider operation area. People incorrectly cite carriers making them obsolete but it was actually just frigates, destroyers, and cruisers matching them that didn’t make them obsolete but rather just illogical.
@panpiper
@panpiper 4 жыл бұрын
Cool idea for a video. I would have liked to see the Burke class US destroyer and the Ticonderoga class US cruiser in among them though, those two ships being among the most important and numerous surface ships in the US navy. That along with the Los Angeles, Seawolf, and Virginia classes of submarines.
