If there is probable cause to believe that a vessel represents the proceeds of illegal or corrupt activities, then the authorities should be transparent about the evidence within a reasonable time period.
@JackBooth120611 ай бұрын
You’re correct. The UK government have acknowledged that the detention of this vessel is not as a result of any anti money laundering nor spurious economic activity. The owners business activities have been gone through with a fine tooth comb, and the FCO have declined no fewer than 11 requests from the former minister of transport, to place this owner on the sanctions list, citing “no lawful justification to do so”.

Question, is the government on the hook for the cost for all the needed repairs?
@brolohalflemming704211 ай бұрын
No, the taxpayer will be. As I understand the legal system, first the owner would need to get the court to agree the yacht was seized unlawfully and should be released. Then the owner can sue for the cost of that detention. This would probably include damages, depreciation, wages, services, and potentially loss of charter revenues. As it's a superyacht, this would get expensive and Grant Shapps won't be billed.

If that is the case, then the owner should be sanctioned. Governments should not arrest people or detain property just because they “think they might find something in the future”. The UK citizens should get behind releasing this yacht because the owner will successfully sue for financial damages and tax payers will be on the hook for the extensive bills.

The owner of this yacht has been very easy to find, from day 1. Ownership is not in question and has not been for over a year now, neither is source of wealth a question. Neither is his total lack of connection to Putin, or any other politician. He isn’t ex military, he isn’t former KGB, he isn’t even a billionaire. The ONLY grounds for continuing the detention are that he is “connected to Russia” - by way of living there. True story - that was the courts ruling.
