I had the estate version in 1973. It looked surprisingly modern but that impression disappeared as soon as you turned the key to start it. I paid £180 for it and it lasted me about nine months. I had a lot of problems with the head gasket which I changed three or four times. It was dreadfully unreliable but to be honest most cars of that era were. I swapped it for a Renault 10 which ran without much trouble for two years.

How come the cooling fan for the engine is at the back of the engine and not up front like other cars? Unusual three cylinder two-stroke engine.

Because this car has longitudinal engine and front wheel drive. The transmission is already almost in the passanger cabin and as You can see, there is no room between engine and the front of the car. Version 353S made from 1985 has antoher radiator. It is hanged on the front mask with electric fan. But this solution is not ideal because You have to do the ignition setup regulary. And You have to take the mask out.

@@thecommuter6515 You're right. The WARTBURG 353 is a simple and practical car based on relatively reasonable principles: 1. Make it cheaper 2. Simplify The simpler the design, the more reliable the product. The engine of the WARTBURG 353 car is very similar to that of a typical motorboat, and is especially similar to the Hirth-3702 engine.
