Thanks for this. I have to admit, the awesomeness of this event was lost on the 16-year-old Saskatchewan boy that I was at the time, dozing on my exchange family's sofa in Bonn, Germany. 'Sie ist Weltmeister!' they cried at me and I feigned an enthusiasm that I now feel intensely as I watch this video almost 30 years later.

Superb Jappeloup...I found this idea of exchanging horses fabulous. I guess it doesn't exist anymore...But now that I'm more into a natural and respectful horse riding, I found G. Greenough hands too rough....perhaps it's just an impression.

Q. What do you mean by: " I guess it doesn't exist anymore " ?! As The exchange of riders in the Final of The World Championships of Show Jumping, is a True test of Horsemanship. Do you want boring, boring, boring, coloured poles, everywhere ?!! As in world cup shows OR European Ch. OR Olympic Games ?! An Olympic S.J. rider from was over heard saying "The Horses are not jumping on this "Sand"". What he means by that is Grass ( turf ) is Natural jumping surface. Sand is not natural for a Jumping horse to be jumping 1.50m or 1.60 metre, for 5 years. Add to that the 5 or 7 years that Horse has been Jumping on Sand as a younger horse. The joints of the horse get an ease on Grass, turf. Great Arenas of the World like Aachen, Spruce Meadows, Dublin, Hickstead, have Special (under-neath the grass) Layers of gravel, for drainage. More Grass is commonsense. Sand is a quick-fix and a short-cut. No wonder the top horses Don't last !! No Ryan's Son's now jumping from age 5 ( and age 7 at top level ) to age 19. Taloubet (rider: Ch. Al.), "age 18" this year, 2018 is a rare exception. At the end of the day A lot of people in Show Jumping don't Care about the horse. They all including the top ones end up in a meat tin.

I know Gail very well and it may look like she is a nit rough with the horses, she really has soft hands. I have rode with her many times. .

@@MarkRobertCuthbert it's a good test for riders but for the horses, it's hard. They make a lot of jump all the competition and the last day, they must jump again with 4 riders, and a jump off, sometimes. This is too much.

Jappeloup was a very good horse, but he was special. Perhaps his mouth was a little hard and the rider must use more hands.

@@MarkRobertCuthbert If you watch Nick Skelton riding the same horse you will see the same open jaw, I wonder if the noseband was loosened?
