Interesting video. I saw her at Kings Langley. She was taking water so was routed to where she's stopped to be beside the water tanker. She then had to reverse as otherwise she would have been on the line to Coventry.

excellent shots👍 good idea though caused chaos for passenger trains i remember at Canterbury West station the Steam train went into the Loop after dropping passengers off then it had to go on opposite side of the station in the sidings to get watered and coal then back again to hook back onto the coaches finding a gap between the passenger trains was difficult they don't do it anymore they do it elsewhere now

I've seen a steam loco take on water on platform 1 in the past, with the fire brigade using a side gate, however maybe it's done further up the track to keep non railway persons away from the operation for Health and safety.
@antman09ful12 жыл бұрын
Yes I was told it does happen on platform one on some occasions, but it was booked to go on the sidings on other side, and that was I believe was where the Water Tanker was waiting Phil.
@jaybee19212 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, as others have pointed out, Sherwood Forester was sent correct road for watering purposes, as that was the onlt suitable access point for the water tanker. Good footage though...
@antman09ful12 жыл бұрын
Well ok but two question for you, 1 why was it booked to go into the sidings on the other side of the station, and 2 why wasn't the water tanker waiting next to the mainline. I believe the water tanker was late arriving because it was on the other side of the line. Regards Mike.
@jaybee19212 жыл бұрын
@@antman09ful1 Hi Mike, On investigation it was found that the tanker had been booked wrong side of the station and to get the loco and it's support coach over to the other side of the station would have involved to many shunts which would have caused delay to regular public services. So the routing used was the best way to avoid delays. Better to have one train delayed than three. Also, you can't have a steam working taking water on a MAIN line now, like the old days, due to the overhead wiring, whereas whereas the siding it was routed to is not wired and therefore safer. The pipe from the tanker has to be fed into the tender from above which involves the crew member having to stand on the top of the tender which, if under the wires, would have brought the aforesaid member within 9ft of the contact wire and he would have been killed. I hope this explanation makes sense to you? Take care, Jon B.

@@jaybee1921 Looks like it was wired?
@jaybee19212 жыл бұрын
@@retabera Not the part of the siding where the loco and carriage were routed to, that part is what is known as an OHL overun spur. It's where the OHL is earthed. The only safe place where crewmen can stand safely on the tender without getting themselces killed. 'Nuff said.
Looks like it was planned that way to get to the tanker. Great catch Mike 👍👍👍👍👍

Well Robert why was it booked to go into the yard on the other side of the line at Signal 4179, and why wasn't the water tanker waiting at the place where it was watered on the fast. As the tanker never came for about ten minutes I believe it was waiting in the yard. Cheers for your comment Robert. Mike.

I don't think so. A look at the map of the tracks would mean 45231 would have to traverse in reverse the south bound flyover to reach the traditional water point. Or if she came up the Northampton line that again would block Southboud slow, for several miles. Unforunately since modenisation and straightening of the WCML at Rugby, there is no way to cross safely from one side to the other. I'm not certain of the NB Water Tower position as it was removed prior to Beeching I think. I would have to travel back in time and ask Grandad as he was a shunter driver.

When a steam loco is operating without the rake of carriages, it always has a singular carriage behind it as in this footage, what is it for? Is it something to do with braking performance or is there another reason for it?
