If I'm Portland I move Lillard and Simons. You make the best deal you can for Dame, my assumption is they'll have their choice of deals either built around an established younger player or pure draft capital and flip Simons to any number of teams needing a shot creator and round out the roster with the best role players you can find. If they're able to just take back expiring contracts to make the money work they are set up with a dynamic young backcourt, a ton of draft capital and crucially flexibility moving forward. The new CBA is going to challenge front offices to turn their rosters over to avoid that punitive second apron. Moving Simons as well as Lillard gives Scoot and Sharpe room to grow without someone like Simons who's priority may very well be getting another huge payday. If Portland keeps Dame I think it's a mistake. The middle course keeps you on the treadmill of too good to get elite talent in the draft but not good enough to compete for a title.
@andrewshandle Жыл бұрын
The Ringer, and Bill in particular, keeps talking about Scoot being this culture changer who only cares about basketball, but there are reports that he coasted all year because he knew he was a top 2 pick...they can't have it both ways. Maybe he'll be good, but from what we know, Scoot's a small guard (6'2"), doesn't defend, can't shoot (eFG% of 45.5 would have been 2nd worst in the NBA last year, only above Killian Hayes, so he's not even "iiffy" as KoC said, he's flat out bad) and coasted most of the year. Scoot feels like the kind of guy that'll be great for a Sports Center highlight or two a game, but when you look at the box score we went 6 for 18 and Portland lost by 10.

I can kind of see this from two perspectives. On the one hand the most valuable thing you can have on your team today to get the best out of your team and your superstar is having starter calibre players who can shoot the lights out. And Miller can probably become a contending team level starter and he can shoot the ball. Jokic and Denver benefit massively from always having MPJ and Murray on the floor because of their lights out shooting. So Miller will be a valuable asset. But on the other hand I can see Scoot becoming a superstar. He could become even better than Miller and Melo and then they will have to think about what could have been.

Now he is very quick and explosive and has an incredibly fast first step, but he didn’t finish as well in the g-league as I expected him to, I think he’ll improve on that but how much I don’t know. And the reason y that height matters is exactly bc defense. Now I’m not someone who’s gonna say Melo can b a good on ball defender hell no and Scoot has the tools too, but if the person is even 3-4 inches taller (like half the league) and marginally athletic, Scoot gonna be cooked, bc ur either just shooting up over him or taking his ass down to the post and feasting. Now Melo can be a great team defender (already think he’s p good rn as is, decent help guy and clogs up passing lanes well) and I feel like his iq’s higher than Scoots which helps, and even though I do see Scoot improving his shot, I’m just as confident as Melo staying far ahead of him as a playmaker and decision maker, while still being a better shooter and overall scorer, I’m also confident that B Miller will also blossom his creation ability to be a great 2nd option and ball handler alongside Melo bc there’s been heavy flashes and vast improvement throughout his rookie season alone in that department. I think Melo will stay comfortably ahead of Scoot as a better player, but even though I do see him and Miller’s ceiling being very similar (I don’t think either r 1st options on a chip team), I do think Scoot will be more “high regarded”. Like PG and Westbrook

@@prestonkelly4825 a young Westbrook is a really good comp for Scoot. They are about the same size and are both explosive athletes. But every time someone is compared to Westbrook everyone just assumes that they wont be able to shoot and they wont become a good defender because Westbrook didn't. But Westbrook wasn't incapable of improving these things he just didn't want to. He actually played some really good defense last season as an old man. Also Westbook is one of the greats. I highly doubt Melo will reach the close to the heights that Russ did even though like you said with Scoot, Melo is a better passer and shooter than Russ probably ever was. Melo would literally have to become one of the best players in the league to be on prime Russ' level. Honestly though, when you're the franchise guy on a team, shooting isn't paramount. You can get others to stretch the floor for you. Lebron wasn't the greatest shooter, Luca isn't the greatest shooter. Giannis is a bad shooter. When you're an extremely skilled hyper athletic player like Scoot, that can carry you to stardom. Derrick Rose was another 6'3 guy who dominated the league before he got injured and he didn't have a great shot. He didn't need one.
@prestonkelly4825 Жыл бұрын
@@SonnyK248 Westbrook is a better comp, but IMO every time I see him play I just see Steve Francis w a better jumper. I think his Jumper will improve over time, but he’s definitely no D Rose. D Rose had a certain level of finesse and was seemingly able to float like MJ, Scoot doesn’t have that level of athletic ability when it comes to verticality, maybe im biased bc D rose is my fav player ever, but I just don’t see that in him, I see much more of an aggressive Westbrook like athleticism in him. That being said, who said Melo can’t be a top 5 player in this league? You just agreed w me that he has abilities neither Westbrook or Scoot has, granted they’re obviously better defensively but at least Melo has the tools to be a decent defender. Melo is one of the best passer playmakers in the league and he has the talent to be one of the best we’ve ever seen all in a 6’8 frame that isn’t finished growing yet with better shooting touch than both Scoot and Westbrook. Not saying he will be better than Westbrook (even though he’s having better seasons than Westbrook @ his age), but he fs has the talent to be better than him.

All Brandon can do is shoot. They are the same level defenders when engaged. Scoot is 6'3" not 6'2". But more importantly he has a 6'9" wingspan. So his actual height is irrelevant. Scoot can playmake WAY more than Miller. Scoot improved by 10% from 3 point up to 32%. Really only needs to get up to 36% to be at Ant Edwards level. Oh and btw he does everything Ant can do offensively. But is elite in the mid range and getting to the hoop. Big L by Hornets. Miller has major downside and risk if being a bust. At worst, Scoot is Steve Francis.

Scoot shot 27.5% from 3, not 32%. He has an eFG of 45.5% which would have been 2nd last in the NBA last season, the dude flat out cannot shot. You watch a few video clips of him hitting a pull up shot or two and just assume that happens all the time, but in reality he is 6 for 14 a game for his career with -2.5 Net Rating when he's on the court. And you say he's "at worse, Steve Francis", Francis at the same age had a eFG of 58% in college in twice as many games! Year 19 Francis destroys year 19 Scoot. Whatever you think of Miller, he can shoot and defend, so his floor is much higher than Scoot's who might be a total bust if he can't figure out how to shoot even a tiny bit.

@@Hooch_is_crzy So rather than taking into account the 268 shots he took in 2022/23 we should just assume he'll be better? That doesn't make much sense. Doing some checking today, I literally cannot find a single guard drafted in the last decade who shot as poorly as Scoot did this year. Not one. That should at least be a concern. As for Francis, streaky or not, he was a _much_ better shooter than Scoot his one year in college and only took 392 shots, so Scoot took about 70% of the amount of shots. Francis was also above league average year 1 and 2 in the league! Other than both playing guard, they have nothing in common unless Scoot secretly hates Vancouver or something. ;)

To be fair, it depends on what you mean by muscular, and what you mean by PG: First of all, no guards come into the league built like Karl Malone. Even Karl Malone didnt come into the league built like that. Second, why would you add a ton of muscle and weight when that slows you down? As a young guard, your primary advantage is quickness and speed. You dont want to be frail, but you dont want to be 6'0" 235lbs and can lift a Volkswagon. Third, "point guard" is subjective. Who is the John Stockton of today's NBA? The NBA has been a combo guard league for quite a while now and a lot of shooting guards and point forwards have played the point guard position. Michael Jordan played the point in Chicago, he has muscles, and he's about as elite as your gonna get, right? Deron William's wasn't a lightweight. Baron Davis was beefy as hell and 6'5". Someone mentioned Vinny Johnson, a combo guard, which means you can definitely include Joe Dumars in there. Kidd wasn't weak and was 6'4". Gary Payton was strong. Allen Iverson was 5'10" but strong as hell. And hey, Magic Johnson was 6'9" and wasnt skinny as a rail, and even though he could play any position on the floor, he primarily played at point guard. And what about Lebron? He certainly played some PG over the years. So it's really easy to name a ton of elite players who played the point guard position that weren't tiny, skinny dudes. Your question is just far too broad and vague. You would need to specifically define "muscular" and "point guard", and even then you're just creating arbitrary subjective distinctions that can easily be countered. So what do you really mean? What's the real discussion here?
