Fun fact! My dad actually worked on this game, he was one of 3D environment artists. Now in days he does 3D character art, if u wanna find him his name is Cliff Young. He and Joe Mad got to know each other pretty well, and even signed my dad’s Marvel Ultimatum comic that Joe Mad did back at marvel.

I'm probably shouting at the ether but what the hell : the tpic of inspirations is a tricky one here considering who made the game : Joe Mad aka Joe Madueira, comic artist from the 90s. Joe used to have his own site and for years he uploaded art, comic covers he did etc and he had a section where he detailed in amazing detail all the gameplay and characters of his "dream game", now known as Darksiders 1. In those sketches he even explicetely wrote things like "Zelda should be an inspiration for dungeon designs and the horse", "Devil May Cry is the template for combat" and that was it. He followed through with it as well and he even had an interview as well where he mentioned how if Darksiders 1 was Devil May Cry, then Darksiders 2 was Bayonetta. Of course that didn't stop outlets from comparing it to God of War, itself already a mix of Zelda, Rygar and Devil May Cry. But the art was the most eggregious given that Blizzard as a company, had a controversy with Joe back in the 90s for outright stealing designs of his for their Warcraft series. That anime look with the huge pauldrons that War has? It wasn't stolen from World of Warcraft, Warcraft stole that kind of designs from Joe's work like Battle Chasers, his Top Cow designs(like the Darkness / Jackie Estacado, who look extremely close to Death from Darksiders 2 and Fury looks like the Angelus from those comics) and his work on X-Men back in the day. War is just designed in the same way as the main character of Battle Chasers, Garrison. As for why you're thinking of Diablo? The artist for Diablo 1 and 2 was Michio Okamura, a man who worked alongside Joe and they had very similar art back when they penned for comics, so it's unfortunately a coincidence that not many picked up on, since nobody cares about comics.

Loved the game and the setting, the ending made me hyped for Darksiders 2 (which I've never played). Your use of the word badass is the perfect way to describe the game, I'm 30 now and found myself feeling giddy at certain points just how badass War could be. I recall hearing in an E3 interview with one of the devs that, they intended for the game to be 4 player coop but they developed it with just one character for a while with the intention to eventually make the other 3, but that went for so long that they eventually decided to just run with what they had. Idk if the hd remaster changed up combat in any way, but I'm pretty sure I only used chaos form twice in the entire game including the tutorial, so I don't believe its necessary.

This is one of the most bittersweet things in my life really. Darksiders participated in forging me not only as a gamer but as a person as well since I decided to go into illustration when I saw Joe Madureira's character concept of War and Death. I cannot think about Darksiders and be brokenhearted to know that the series may never have an ending. If I had all the money in the world, my 1st project would be to reassemble Vigil Games and crowdfund the entire series of Darksiders exactly the way they envisionned it.

Hi Mayor! So it's been a year since you posted this video and, man, I've got to say I'm so dang happy I found these videos. I've always knew of Darksiders and was a fan singularly due to it's art style. I'm a huge, huge fan of Joe Madureira so to see these are characters designed by him was certainly a draw for me. However with so many games being released during the time of this game's release, I simply never got into it. All these years later with three more games added to the Darksiders roster, I feel the pull once again. However your videos and the way you told the stories really lit a fire in me. I just downloaded Darksiders 1-3 to my PS5. Haha! I thought of starting with Darksiders 2 as I'm all about open world games but I wish to see this story play out from beginning to end. So, again, thank you for these retrospectives because they have helped me rekindle a love for these games.

I completly disagree. I believe that the story is the best out there. Yet to be topped by another game. I played so many games over the years. And not one has me excited to look at the lore as much as darksiders. Some come close, like God of War or Witcher. But in those games you just do not feel as significant. And those are focused more on the protagonist rather than the plot. Like there is no character development in the first and the second game as far as I can tell. And that is the beauty of it. These characters are hundreds if not thousands of years old. They're developed enough by now. I hated the fact Fury was so immature.

Just finished the game, really enjoyed it. i dont know if its just me playing half the game today or not, but the final 2-3 hours were easily the worst part of the game, the final dungeon would have probably been far more enjoyable if they didnt do the generic “complete 3 of x” thing and just had 2. My only other complaint is that it felt inconsistent, if thats how youd describe it, some things are used throughout the entire game, some are used about a third of the game then dropped, and some are used for a single dungeon. I feel they had a ton of ideas for the game, and decided to use all of them even if it meant giving you new gameplay mechanics about 45 minutes before credits rolled. All that said i did enjoy the game, combat felt nice

My favorite franchise and my favorite game. Love the world and lore like you do, something about Angels and Demons always gets me as well. Also War is just my kind of character, stoic and BA. Also I am always glad to see others love it like I do. 9:20 - War was killed. The Charred Council saved him by reclaiming his soul before it went to the well (the Lord of Bones comments on this in DSII). 25:30 - I may be misremembering but I am pretty sure there is a socket item that allows you to gain chaos meter from any weapon, isn't there? But yeah normally they do not produce wrath which sucks (and the fact they all level individually sucks as well). 32:15 - Also wearing the Abyssal Armor I see, nice. 33:42 - Totally agree, the Black Throne was good but was really repetitive and its the one part of the game I feel takes too long. Also agree on the on the Shadow Arenas, just drag on a bit too long.

Puzzles were amazing and combat was satisfying as hell. It could've been improved on but then they moved to darksiders 2 and the entire style changed like wtf. Anyways I'm liking ds2 but then it starts to repetitive as hell and boring. The combat didn't hit the same and puzzles weren't as good. Then they released ds3 which was even worse. I quit the game 2 hours in I was so bored. Really sad to see a great game and what could've been one of the best games if they improved on what they had but instead they kept completely changing their game never allowing them to master a certain style. Really disappointed me to not have seen darksiders 1 improved upon.

Good vid boss, though I'd diss agree with one thing....sure we used the chaoseater because it's badazz design lmao. Na your right rage meter or havic mode is essential.

It's just essential but also by far the most badass weapon so win win 😂

I was contemplating talking about the visuals but the thing with these retrospectives is I'm never revisiting a game expecting it to live up to todays standards visually. That's for any game and obviously some games age better than others but in general, it's just not an element of nostalgia that usually holds up so I skip over it. Love Mad Joe's work though, he killed it honestly

I'm old enough to be an "OG" Hamilite, so what I'm about to say has more weight than a "modern fan" = he is not that great of a voice over artists; 99 999999999% of his character portrayals are just different pitches of "The Joker".

I played this game and I didn't liked it, there are certainly better games to play than this, the action ain't good, there are barely any combos in the game, and its way too long for its own good, it seems that you are going to finish it, but wait, there's more, it has too much puzzles and the game is quite boring and the gameplay is clunky.

I guess say what you will about THQ but at least those bored big wigs listened to their play testers.
@MayorHairBear2 жыл бұрын
I forget who it was but I think whoever the head of the THQ meeting was, was actually the one who was getting more people to play it so despite their initial boredom they made the right call!
