My regret is not buying gold when I was younger. I guess it's a generational thing... If your parents never showed you the ropes because their parents never showed them the ropes... it becomes lessons in life that never get taught. Now that I'm older and I took time to understand the importance of precious metals; I try to share the knowledge to those that are still "lost" in the generational rat wheel.

Worst mistake I made was doing silver first because of my lack of knowledge I wish I would’ve only cared about gold at first and I’d have a much bigger stack than I do now. And the sunk cost of the premium on the silver wouldn’t be so bitter in my mouth. I doubt I’ll ever recoup the loss from silver due to its market manipulation
@shan40782 жыл бұрын
We have all made foolish mistakes when starting out. My biggest mistake was buying a 10 oz bar of gold. I was trying to save on premiums, but what I didn't think of was the fact that if something ever happens where I need to sell, it will be a problem. No LCS can afford to buy it, and if I want to sell back to online dealer, it will cost about $ 300 to insure through the post office. Oh well, live and learn.

Yes, many of us have that in our past. I do too and it was because I was too busy raising 2 kids, buying and finishing the basement in our newer house, and making a good amount of money in the stock market. But 2008 was quite an eye opener. It was during that mess that I realized that I was good enough at making money that I could make more when I needed it but that I also needed some way of protecting my wealth from inflation eating it and crazy market gyrations ruining what I had acquired to that point. That was when I got into buying PMs. I bought silver at first and liked its heft and luster a lot. Starting slowly, I ramped up my buying via buying more ounces every quarter. When silver rose to $35 an oz., I quit buying it and just saved my cash for a while. When it fell below $20 an oz. I started buying again. After that I started buying a little gold, an oz. here and there, mostly when gold was below $1200 an oz. Since then, my gold buying continues and I buy 5 coins every few months. Sometimes, these are 1-oz. coins but lately I have bought both 1/2 and 1/4 oz. gold coins. The premiums per oz. are higher on the fractional gold coins but I like the flexibility that they might give me in the future. With them, I don't need to sell a full oz. if my need for cash is only for a few hundred dollars. Way back in 1979, I did buy 3 $100 bags of junk silver at $17.50 per oz. of silver. I held them for a while and when silver hit $42 an oz. I sold 1 of them for cash. I did the same at $44 and finally at $46. The profit from this was what funded my early stock buying. Once I got into that I did not get back into PMs until early in 2010. This was kind of a crooked path to follow but it all worked out eventually. No regrets concerning buying PMs or most of the stocks I put some money into.

Buying just about anything from a major sovereign mint is very likely to be a very good choice. If you are into unusual items, this could be just the thing. On the other hand, some things are rare because few among us care to own them. I doubt that will be the case with this, though. Yes, I might have bought those too just for them being unusual. I have 1 unusual item in my PM stack and that is a solid Lexan plastic case containing 5 US Franklin half dollars from the early to mid 1950s. If it does not spend at the stores than it needs to be sold until some folding stuff is exchanged for it. Sigh. One could say that I am batting .500 in this but I can see that my daughter will be having some real difficulties when things get bad. My son will be OK. He's a good money manager and investor and also appreciates owning some silver... and guns... LOTS of guns. Many of them are pretty good investments too with the value of some models rising quickly. My gold holdings are relatively recent, starting in 2013 or so. Maybe this makes me want to hold onto it a little tighter than if I had owned it for a long time? This will be my property tax insurance. If I can sell some each year to pay those taxes, we will be able to keep a roof over our heads in hard times. I think I have 8 of the 20 franc coins - french, swiss and Tunisia - I got them cheap so I will just need to take my time selling them....thankfully I've done much better in recent years and my gold coin choices appear to be much better... if I could buy any gold at spot - I'll buy it...except maybe chinese gold.

the best combination is diet coke and platinum!!! my first gold coins i bought was in the late 1960's from a private party for a steep price of $50 a ounce!!!! check out the 1099-K reporting as of Jan.1 2022 the limit was lowered a lot.

I agree. Over the years, I have made some stock purchases that turned out not to be so good. Gold, on the other hand, has NEVER failed to impress or do very well. But then, my gold buying has been VERY simple... Eagles and Maples, nothing else. Don't care about the 25 coin tax issue since I always pay my taxes when they are due. If I had a list of 1 million things that would benefit my life, hassling with the IRS would NOT be on it! lol

Sold gold at a loss? Not very smart. If your gold dealer knows what they are doing they would purchase any gold coin, if they know their business. I read about so many inexperienced gold shops.

A few days back I went to my lcs and sold my gold 1oz maple leaf. It was when gold was up a bit more than now. I took that money and bought a gold buffalo. For whatever reason I didn’t like it as much as I thought I would. I think because it’s a chunkier coin!🤣🤷♂️

The Buffalos grow on you (they grew on me at least). I didn't like them at first. Now, they're an easy favorite. Cheers!
@edb38772 жыл бұрын
I can see why you would think this because I also do not care for the Buffs. It's not that they are a bad coin or anything, I simply do not like the design... even on a nickel. lol But then, this is what coin collecting is all about... doing what appeals to each of us. To those who like and buy Buffs, good for you guys and gals. I won't be bidding against you for those coins and pushing up their prices. 😉
@anthonys2392 жыл бұрын
@@edb3877 haha, I agree completely. Stack what you like. As long as it’s easy to liquidate and it appeals to you that’s all that matters!🤠

@@anthonys239 Right on, Anthony! There are so many ways that we can create a PM stack that suits us, so having lots of choices is a good thing. I can see how those new to PMs should be getting some advice on what to buy, in general, so that they don't load up on a lot of stuff that looks nice but that doesn't have a lot of resale potential. Some of the private mints put out a lot of sets that probably won't sell for half what was paid for them and sometimes even gold plated stuff that looks great but that has very little value.

You are more like a coin collector than a bullion stacker. We are like the dwarves in middle earth...hypnotic indeed. Common date US constitutional 20 dollar gold pieces, more viscous than water.

My "foolish" early buys were a 1oz Kangaroo and a 20g Combi Bar. Keeping them just to avoid the hassle of selling them off, though a Buffalo would be a nice replacement 🤔. That was so early on when I put the brakes on silver. I wish there was a way to flip my Bourbon stack into gold, though. Try Barrell Bourbon, if you haven't. Cheers!🥃
