I had to pause the video to address the line of adult jokes in kid movies. What stood out to me instantly using Ratatouille as the example is that the characters are adults. When I’m watching a kids movie and the adult characters make a reference or joke, it’s funny and relatable because you’re seeing the adult character doing/thinking like adults. It is ALWAYS awkward and inappropriate when a child is the one saying or referencing an adult comment/situation. It doesn’t match in our minds and I think that’s what creates that discomfort.
@amandamandamands7 ай бұрын
Yes in Shrek the comments that Shrek make are great inuendo and are done in such a way that an adult can still come up with a kid friendly explanation for what it was they were laughing at and most of the time it was Shrek saying them. Agree that it is very different hearing an adult saying inuendo than a child.

I've been at friends houses while their kid is watching a cartoon and the characters make adult-ish jokes that kids don't understand. The kids just keep watching and don't pick up on the fact it was a joke, they just absorb it as normal dialog. I've looked at the kids to see if their facial gestures indicate that they get the joke, but are pretending that they don't. The jokes harmlessly fly over their heads and entertain the adults who are stuck watching the show.

What is 1 of the main themes we lately hear so much about since Jeffrey E's story. Not only in the US but also here in Europe. It seems a big thing everywhere. What about the transmovement so highly promoted even by presidents and the pope. Is it an agenda. What about the explicit sexual education of our children. It is interesting to look up what the who and UNICEF write in their rights for children. It seems as if they are preparing society for the P-word: children have to have the rights parents won't grant them at such a young age, so the laws will give them what they "want and deserve"...

This seems very much like he has had time to perfect his answers (which brings to question your point of why he hasn't contacted any of these people to aplogize beforehand). Likewise, even if a person did not personally wrong you, if you learn of these things about them and then confront them, there is going to be awkwardness. Animosity. Confusion. All of this just sounds like them shooting the breeze. I wouldn't be surprised if it was all set up in advance for Dan's hopeful benefit.

I appreciate your take on this, i worked with offenders of SA AND dv at the beginning of my career. Some truly have regret and shame for their beahviors and there inability to reframe from acting on impulse. Some apologize because they were caught, and they are now seen for their preditory behaviors, they know people want them to apologize. As a client said years ago. "You apologize for spilled milk, you dont apologize for when you hurt someone". Knowing one is truly sorry and regretful only comes with time after you stopped hurting people. I greatly appreciate you discussing this topic and not showing the videos, those kids were exploted enough. These kids at times had their parents on set, and they didnt say anything due to the money and fame. Your other question, was where is the line for something being inappropriate. Everyone has their own threshold, for each individual they have to ask themself "does this make me uncomfortable" go with your gut, teach your children they have automony over their body and a right to tell someone "no".

@honigwaffel64117 ай бұрын
His therapist comment sounds to me as if, in his perspective, the issue is not sexual harassment of children, but that for him, the children who have issues on set are those that aren't "ready to do what it takes to get famous". I think this is terrifying. This man and how he talks sends chills down my spine. Furthermore, wasn't Drakes mother, whom he describes as wonderful, extremely neglectful towards Drake? I don't know any mother who would let her kid sleep over at a wayy older coworkers place to save gas and time. For me, this seemed very negligent, especially when you contrast her with the father. This would also explain how Dan knew that it was Drake, as that was a question I had after the documentary as seemingly the rest of the set didn't know. All in all, this interview makes him even more suspicious and just goes to show how little it all means to him. He's throwing himself a pity party.

41:18 THATS NOT WHAT A THERAPIST DOES. Those are called agents. Therapists help you work through your emotional state. They’re not there to offer advice on what you need in order to be successful. I think what you meant here, Dan, is advocacy for the kids and their families. Or, aka, someone who genuinely cares and wants the kids to be happy. Not someone who only sees them as dollar signs.

Great analysis! I found it odd that he states he HAS apologized to the people before and then a little later he states he definitely owes them an apology like he hasn’t done so already. So which is it?! I agree there is a lot of deflection from specific issues by talking about the broader issue so he doesn’t have to take personal accountability for purposeful decisions he made or actions that paint him in a bad way.

23:45 I love that you distinguished the difference between adult humor and inappropriate humor. Almost all the old cartoons did it, like how many times have you seen a kid's show and noticed the double entendre behind it later on as an adult? That's all well and good, but what Dan was doing was definitely not that, where even as a kid you go "that was kinda weird" Edit: To answer the question, I think it's the intent. Like I can imagine in a writer's room full of maybe comedy fans that hears a line and takes in out of context, makes it a point to make a joke and leans into it without going too far but it's subtly there. The way Dan writes, as mentioned before he runs a tight ship of his way or no way and so from the beginning he wanted these scenes to occur no matter what. He had a vision behind it, and I think it's pretty clear what that was inside and outside the scripts.

@eileencrys7 ай бұрын
Agree, and also the huuuge difference between adult jokes in cartoons is the media. Cartoons are animated, aren't real people. Sure, the jokes can be inappropriate and wrong as well when written with poor intention, but at least they're being portrayed by fictional characters who exist only in the timespan and universe of that cartoon. With Nickelodeon, these were very much real kids being used as vehicles, as literal toys for the adults to make inappropriate jokes, perverted adults who probably thought it was even funnier to have unaware (real) kids doing adult stuff, ignoring how that could've have ripercussions later on their lives, career and mental health.

Spidey I think with "making sure the kid wants to be there" he's referring to situations like with Jennette McCurdy. It was her mother who decided Jennette would become an actress, and Jennette booked roles because she was talented and gave her best because her purpose in life was to make mom happy. She never wanted that career herself. A good therapist might be able to detect where the motivation is coming from
@mythical.craftstarot7 ай бұрын

My impression is more of an intend to have kids only dedicated to being there -> less likely to complain, and more willing to jump the hoops that HE 'd want them to. It would help him, keep the storry and complains down and from coming out, which .. I kind of find scary. Pretty sure he thought about howntomcover his stacks and minimize the problems for him. That is not improvment, most certainly not for child actors.

Regarding the line between what's OK and what's not, I think something that matters is how forced it is. For example, in the documentary, they talk about the scene from Zoey 101 that made them particularly uncomfortable was the jelly squirting on Jamie Lynn's face. That just wouldn't happen naturally. Whereas with language at least there's a chance that a kid could say something and not realize it could be misconstrued

Clearly, he's not sorry for anything he did to anyone. He's just trying to save his reputation. I think he failed. And BTW, it is NOT common practice in television to take two writers who are not already partners and make them split a salary. Absolutely not. I've worked in scripted TV in LA for decades. Not only is it not done, the union would not stand for it. Frankly, any agent who agrees to this needs to be dropped. Now, if a writing team gets hired together (not put together by the show), then they do split the writers feel as if they're only one person because they do not work separately from each other, so their writing output equals that of one person.

Spidey, I agree with you on this except for one thing, which derives from my own clinical experience. I believe Dan is victim-blaming when he suggests therapists should be on-set. It’s subtle but definitely revelatory of his true perspective. He is suggesting that the complaints by these child actors arise because they were unsuitable to the task, they were in the wrong careers, they shouldnt have been on the set at all. It’s the “casting couch” myth, all over again. A part of him still believes these actors and staffers should have submitted to the abuse and accepted his dominance of them. They should, he believes evidently, have “closed their eyes and thought of Hollywood”. (I dont know if you get that Victorian/British reference?)

Spidey. You are *the first* person covering this topic who refused to air those disgusting scenes. THANK YOU. I have seen them so many times while going down this rabbit hole and I feel like my face is permanently contorted into "disgust" from it. Blegh. Where you're talking about where we draw the line for suggestive jokes in kid shows: I agree having the joke spoken is one thing! But another thing, in my opinion, is when it involves the children. Having a child essentially perform a suggestive joke or when a kid is put into a compromising position for something that's clearly adult entertainment. I firmly believe that Schneider knew what he was doing. The format in which Ariana Grande's character was recorded during the potato segment, toe-s*cking segment, and water-pouring segment all made it specifically look like a p0rno. On top of that, the way that her character talks. She's not just being made to sound young and dumb. She's supposed to sound like a p0rnstar. It's disgusting. And the very clear mock c*mshots. Bleeeeeghhhhh There was SO much more that Schneider has been accused of that they didn't touch on in the documentary. It bothers me that he doesn't address his cr33py relationship with Amanda Bynes. Does he even comment on making women massage him? I'd love to see YOU or one of the Behavior Panel interview him. He was way too comfortable here. Sorry I always write you a book when I comment but I have a couple off-topic questions: What show are you on on Netflix? I googled it but couldn't find anything and I'd love to watch it. Second, is your Pothos plant okay? (assuming that's what it is) lol. You might just need a tiny little LED light for it. I noticed in your last video it was losing some leaves and I'm not trying to be bossy at all, lol I'm autistic and plants are one of my obsessions so I just had to ask. 🤣🤣 I know this week was tough for you, so I just wanna say I appreciate you and hope next week treats you better. “I Carly”,“Victorious” etc have all been watched over a hundred billion times on reruns for the past 15-20 years. The sexually suggestive material could have easily been addressed by Nickelodeon as soon as someone complained. I’m not blaming Dan on this. Dan has been accused of being a pedophile and a pervert for years. He is not a sexual predator or someone would have come out after all these years. He is a complete asshole, but this documentary groups the sexual abuse with the toxic work environment, and once again Dan looks like he is grouped in with sexual assault. I believe this should have been done on separate documentaries because the crimes are not comparable.

Why he thought there should be therapists didn’t make sense is because it WASN’T HIS IDEA! He watched a protest that happened previously and saw Alexa Nikolas say that during the Nickelodeon protest. (She’s the actress in Quiet On Set and played in Zoey 101.) Her reason was for the the children’s well-being not to ask them if they really wanted to do the job. 🙄 Love the video, it all made sense. Great info!

32:48 That is the EXACT experience that I had when he said every kid should have a licensed therapist. I paused the video to write this as soon as I heard you say. That's NOT the reason. He said to insure the kids actually want to be there and know what it entails, NO! I have not heard your answer yet but I am going to give mine and compare it with what I hear you say in a moment. My answer is that licenses therapists ( and I was also thinking advocates) should be there to protect children from inappropriate situations, power mongers, SA, their therapists/advocates should be protectors of the bodies, their minds and their health. Advocates should have a stringer voice of child protection than anyone else on the set. I am totally with yiu that he is not really sorry. He did no honest self reflection. He had power and did not have the inner character it takes to not let that power go to his head. To me, I would say that since he doesn't have to really do anything to change his behavior he set up a non-confronting interview where he could casually speak his piece and ignorantly assumed once he said it that everyone would just take his word. He arrogantly was voicing a rewrite of his own history, he was rude to people and controlling simply because he could be and he would be angry at anyone who told him no even today. No remorse, just explanation denial. Very much like an orange haired president who expects that if he says it everyone ill automatically take it as the truth. Absolute power corrupts absolutely and some people clench on to their entitlement and damn anyone who disagrees.
