i was working on this in the background of that sparkvideo, i love Kristophs Character despite his flaws! i hope you enjoyed, i toned the editing down a bit because i want it to feel like i'm also directly speaking to you guys! Big thanks Edit: And apparently it needs clarifying somehow I don’t think he’s the greatest ace attorney villain” ever but he’s definitely a boogeyman type character contrary to people who I’m “going insane” I’m totally sane?

The main issue about Kristoph for me is simply that I wish we’d gotten to see more of his relationship to Klavier! We get hints at it in Succession, but not enough in my opinion. It feels heavily implied Kristoph basically raised Klavier in the absence of their parents, but we don’t have anything confirming that in the game. This is Klavier’s brother we’re talking about, and an important relationship that forms both Kristoph and Klavier’s characters! I mean Kristoph most likely wasn’t always a bad brother, and that’s part of why it’s so hard for Klavier when all this is revealed. I also would’ve loved to see his mentoring of Apollo more as it’s supposed to be an important relationship to Apollo’s character, but we barely get any insight into it before Kristoph is in handcuffs, and we don’t see Apollo to torn up about it throughout the game. He was mentored by this man for a year!

Turnabout Trump may have been the game's best case but I feel like it would have been enhanced if it was at least the first case instead of a tutorial case so we can actually see how Apollo and him interact and have the plot twist twist even more with the revelation but also being able to see the hints of what kind of guy he is in hindsight, like how Trials and Tribulations handled Dahlia's screentime more effectively

So a couple of extra things I have about Kristoph: first, it took me a few playthroughs and watching others' to realize that the "Devil" Vera mentions seems to refer specifically to the back of his scarred right hand, namely when it tenses up and resembles a ghoulish visage. Second, those black Psyche-Locks are given some more elaboration in Dual Destinies, being described as representing a secret someone keeps subconsciously, without even being aware of it, and forceful attempts to remove them by presenting evidence evidence can cause permanent emotional and spiritual damage, i.e. what basically seems to have happened to Kristoph at the end of Turnabout Succession.
@pinxelated2799
@pinxelated2799 Ай бұрын
The Devil thing is really cool ngl. Kristoph's black psyche locke secret is probably that he's extremely paranoid, thinking that he's about to be found out at any second, which is why he obsessively watches everyone. Because he is a sociopath, he sees the world as a game without empathy, a struggle with a 'winner' on top. I think his massive ego is to overcompensate for this darkness inside of him.
@IceBlueLugia
@IceBlueLugia Ай бұрын
We never broke Kristoph’s Psyche Locks though. He never answers the question of why he killed Shadi Smith, which is what caused them to appear. So that’s not really what happened to him
@thesardonicrenegade
@thesardonicrenegade Ай бұрын
@@IceBlueLugia It's heavily implied that Kristoph realizing that everything that happened was all planned by Phoenix was what broke his black psyche locks, improperly. Which is why he becomes a screaming, twitching wreck at the end of the trial, cackling like a madman when the verdict was given. And his motive for killing Shadi Smith almost too obvious. It was just simple, petty, jealousy. Defending the famous Zak Gramarye in court would have given Kristoph insane levels of clout and fame, and to lose that chance just because he lost a simple(so he thinks) game of cards, and instead Gramarye's defence being taken by Phoenix Wright, someone Kristoph cannot stand, broke him. And to get back at Phoenix, he planned out the forged evidence scheme and killed Shadi 7 years later to tie up any loose ends.
@IceBlueLugia
@IceBlueLugia Ай бұрын
@@thesardonicrenegadeI’m aware his motive is obvious and what you said is clearly the reason, hell part of it is basically confirmed by him. However the point is that he himself doesn’t technically answer the question of why he did it. If he did, then the psyche locks would’ve broken earlier without issue DD’s retcon for what the black locks mean is interesting and could definitely work for Kristoph in the sense that he has sort of forgotten the real reason Zak dismissed him and has told himself that it was because he lost a game of poker. But then it becomes more odd why realizing Phoenix planned a new legal system to catch him would break those locks and somehow make him remember that, those two things aren’t really connected. If you’ve played GAA Chronicles then a certain character in G2-4 is probably a better example of what might happen if you improperly break black psyche-locks, though of course we don’t actually see them there.

Honestly the biggest problem with him is that he feels more like Phoenix villain, than Apollo and Klavier villain, wich makes him somewhat underwhelming since this is supposed to be Apollo's story, not Phoenix (i really like him having involvement with him, and being the reason that Phoenix lost his badge, but it feels like they could do more with him to tie him better to the other characters), so the villain should be someone who has more involvement with the protagonist. Also it feels odd how we barely know how Klavier feels about his brother being a actual criminal, i wish we got more interactions between these two and a insight on Klavier

Factually, none of the Fanon ways to say Klavier are correct. Now, my fave is "Clay-vier" i guess but if we're going by ZE KORREKT GERMAN PRONOUNCIATION it would be "Cluh-via" (source: I'm german) with emphasis on the second syllable since his name is not an actual first name but just the fucking german word for piano. So imho every way to pronounce Klavier is wrong lol

Reposting my long rambling Kristoph analysis I posted on another creator’s video (now with even more bonus commentary) because I love him and I will never miss a chance to talk about him: Kristoph’s rage at the prospect of normal people judging him in his breakdown is so excellent because it gets at the central contradiction behind his character. Kristoph spent his life trying to build an unbreakable illusion of coolness and perfection, the “Coolest Defense Attorney in The West,” but he has one weakness: average people see through that because they know nobody is perfect. When Zak sussed out Kristoph’s dark side during that game of poker (leading to him dropping Kristoph as his attorney) it wasn’t because Kristoph messed up - I don’t believe he’d let his mask slip like that so easily - it was because Kristoph plays poker differently than everyone else. Every average person plays by assuming a poker face, by masking their true emotions as they start the game, but when Kristoph plays poker he doesn’t change - he can’t. What Zak saw that day was the fact that _Kristoph is always masking,_ he always has a poker face on, and so there were no additional walls to put up. For years Kristoph deluded himself into believing that Zak fired him for losing because he couldn’t bear the truth that his perfect illusion didn’t work, could never work, because Zak Gramarye - the terrible, irresponsible, impossibly affable man that he was - was still ultimately a normal person. Kristoph strikes me as someone who developed his persona based largely on what he read in books, and this tracks with a lot of his actions. In 4-1, he constantly undermines his testimony by going on these flowery tangents that inevitably reveal information he shouldn’t have known, all because he decides waxing poetically would make him look good. His obsession with his own public appearance, constantly seeming above everyone else, doomed him. You can actually see his “book-learning” confirmed in a few pieces of official art, two of which show him holding books with legible titles. The titles are “Legal Positivism” and “My Best Friend.” These are PERFECT CHARACTERIZATION for him and really get him down to-a-T. He reads the legal positivism book not because he believes in the legal philosophy but because knowing it gives him arguments to make, gives him rules he can bend, gives him a way to feel smarter and more in-control than everyone around him. He also reads the book on friendship in the same way because it’s an alien concept to him - he is studying the idea of friendship just like how he studies legal theory, they’re both just different things he’s learning to manipulate. Kristoph has no real friendship or belief, what his books tell you about him is that he is so disconnected from those things he has to actively learn them. There’s this moment when Phoenix and him are in his cell and Kristoph describes his dog as “delicate” and his “best friend,” totally unaware of how strange he sounds to Phoenix (who at first assumes he’s talking about the rose on his desk), but this interaction makes infinitely more sense with the idea that Kristoph is getting his persona from books. He read the phrase “Man’s best friend” and assumed that was just what people call their dogs. It’s such a subtle detail but it gives so much insight into how disconnected and asocial he is. Coming back to his breakdown, his citation of the absolute law is very interesting, because, as Klavier points out, he doesn’t actually believe in that : Kristoph loves loopholes. He has no genuine political or philosophical conviction, he just claims whatever he believes will serve his ends and improve his image. Kristoph loves absolute laws because he can manipulate them, because he is smart enough that in any system of perfect logic he will be able to engineer a scheme. That’s where he fails, too. Kristoph’s plans throughout the game only seem to be complicated by people acting in ways that aren’t obvious or rational. All of Kristoph’s plans would’ve worked if only people had acted perfectly, but they didn’t. Zak escapes his trial, ruining the guilty verdict (and likely death penalty) Kristoph planned for. Vera and Drew don’t trigger his trap for seven years all due to luck as Vera happens to enjoy the stamp too much to return it. Phoenix refuses to take his loss lying down and spends seven years meticulously trying to catch him, even breaking the image of himself as a good-guy lawyer and literally forging evidence to win. He beats Kristoph by being imperfect, by being a fallible mess of a person who doesn’t follow an straightforward set of rules. The Jurist System is the final and purist form of this sort of flaw - Kristoph’s perfect legal victory is beaten by the fact people aren’t perfect. People are bad and make mistakes and don’t follow absolute rational reasoning, and people see Kristoph - this ultimately cool and rational being - and they _see through him._ They know there is something impossibly _wrong_ with his perfection and, when he realizes they can see it, he breaks. Kristoph also fits majorly into the theme of succession and change. He can’t let go of things, he can’t ever allow himself or be fallible and real like disbarred Phoenix does, he keeps this air of coolness up at at all times at the expense of everyone else. We see this when he rigs the trial that was meant to be him and Klavier - he can’t give his brother ANYTHING, can’t allow him the slightest chance of besting him - and because of his machinations (which eventually turn to destroying Phoenix) Klavier isn’t able to confidently succeed him, even in victory. He turns away from prosecuting, away from the courtroom, because Kristoph’s actions never give an opportunity for change. Only when Phoenix - at his lowest and most imperfect self - produces forged evidence to break Kristoph’s veneer of perfection does Klavier finally return to court. That trial is what allows Apollo to become a genuine lawyer too, giving both of them a chance to see past the perfection and understand the real flaws of the courtroom. Pre-timeskip Phoenix is, arguably, a really interesting parallel to Kristoph. They’re both at the top of their field, prideful, perfectly composed - Phoenix even condescends to Klavier numerous times during their trial together. He mocks him for being young, inexperienced, and new - and he acts just like Winston Payne does to Apollo, just like Kristoph does to everyone. He’s at a stage of his life wher he thinks he’s done changing, where he won and now gets his eternal reward. Even though pre-timeskip Phoenix never goes to the insane lengths Kristoph does to prove he’s perfect, he does share the same arrogance and refusal of change - and it’s very revealing seeing how the former completely reinvents himself over seven years while the latter refuses to even consider it. Disbarred Phoenix is the ultimate imperfection, he’s lost everything and he’s given up hiding how jaded and washed-up he’s become, and it’s _his actions_ that let Apollo and Klavier become lawyers again. It’s because of _him_ and his complete flawed-ness that things genuinely change. Kristoph can’t produce that kind of succession, nobody can ever measure up to the facade he wears, but Phoenix can give them the ugly truth - and that’s much better competition. I wanted to add here that I disagree with the assertion I’ve seen online about how Kristoph should return. He is my favorite character in the entire series, but I do not think he should come back without a REALLY GOOD REASON. There would need to be a story that really, truly needed him - otherwise it would drag him and the story down. Every single moment of Kristoph in AA5 is immaculate and necessary, and unless a future AA game can craft a story where he can shine like that again I never want him back. Let his actions haunt Apollo and Klavier like Von Karma to the original trilogy cast, but don’t turn him into a cameo.

YOU GET IT OP!! i love how well you characterize him, hes such an interesting character. hes a petty and pretentious guy, his ego was ultimately what led to his downfall. the parallels you made between kristoph and phoenix were genius. they both took a blow to their seemingly irrefutable, idolized pursuit of their careers. but what caused kristoph to fall harder was his refusal to taking half measures unlike phoenix and his obsession over a perfect verdict. it only became more clear how distraught he appeared when he realized that two can play at that game; how he was ironically exposed through his own corrupted methods. youve made me pace around for 30 minutes just analyzing and picking apart all youve said. i love seeing people recognize his potentials as the amazing culprit that he is especially what you did here

Imo he is only max "good" villain but not amazing Cause of several reasons This is my opinion on him. 1.Underutulization Kristoph is not given enough screen time to fully develop his character. His appearances are limited It honestly felt like capcom forgot he existed and then at the last second they realize "ooh he is the final villain" He appears for like a hour in 4-4 which is insulting 2.lack of foreshadowing In the earlier parts of the game, there is little foreshadowing of Kristoph's true nature. 3. His relation to Apollo and Klavier It is laughable to be frank. Why wasnt this relationship developed. Why should I care about kristoph if apollo does not? Same goes to kristoph and klavier relationship- i didnt care about it 4. You dont give the final blow to his plans which makes it less satisfying - it is also worse cause apollo forgets about the jurist system which is insulting to his character. 5. His plan for framing phoenix for disbarrment. Oh god - the stupid disbarrment Putting aside that this is completely out of character for phoenix to fall for this trick Kristoph's plan for disbarring phoenix relies purely on luck(that phoenix will present it and everyone being an idiot). This honestly makes kristoph kinda pathetic and not really smart to not plan anything cohesive. 6.this is bias argument here but his motive is a bit too petty imo. And ergo not compelling. 7. His actions does not make characters develop. This is an easy one No characters develop especially trucy which is a shame Apollo doesnt develop cause well his relationship with kristoph sucks in writing pov And Klavier was already caring for the truth from the get go so no development And phoenix is contradictory so not him either 8. His involvement in 4-1 Kristoph is really obvious culprit His twist is only for shock value Logic on why he is accused does not make sense(calling victim bald) since he could have said that he saw his head after they greeted each other before the murder Also when apollo and phoenix accused Kristoph of lying about seeing the murder scene through the small window (after revealing the secret tunnel), Kristoph could have easily countered that argument by stating that he saw the scene AFTER the actual murder,set up the scene and escaped through the tunnel. Moreover, there's not an iota of conclusive evidence indicating his presence inside the room. I don't know why he didn't argue right there which makes him again not smart for plot reasons - so he is inconsistent. Sometimes he is smart sometimes he isnt. You know what would be in character for him? To not say to phoenix that Shadi was bald cause that came out as unnatural and have him claim that he was there at the scene of the crime to protect phoenix from being accused. He would argue that he tampered with the scene to make him less suspicious and this would make him more smart but nope Frankly I think this twist shouldnt be in 4-1 cause not only it is illogical but it also make him really underwhelming Still a good villain but I cant see why fans will call him amazing since he has this many problems

I think a lot of it comes from the fact that his story arc was seemingly abandoned. Shu Takumi seemed to have created Kristoph as the next Manfred von Karma, a story that also factored into Phoenix's disbarment and all the other mysteries in Apollo Justice. Then Takumi stopped working on the main series, the new writers tried to win back the fans by giving Phoenix his badge back, and Duel Destinies took the story in a completely new direction. Now, I like Duel Destinies and Spirit of Justice. I like Athena Cykes and Simon Blackquill. But I do kinda wanna see what would've happened if we stuck to the original arc. From what we've seen in Apollo Justice, I think he had the potential to be one of the most terrifying villians in the entire series.
