📍 The tragic death of Lupe Vélez, the "Mexican volcano"
On December 13, 1944, actress Lupe Velez decorated her home with flowers, lit a dozen candles, which she placed next to her religious images and statues, and then took 80 Seconal tablets. She put on one of his most beautiful clothes, lay down on her silk-covered bed, placed roses around her, took his crucifix in her right hand, then clasped her hands together and waited for death. It sounds a bit like a kitschy melodrama, but that was the reality. But who was Lupe Vélez, and why did he decide to take his own life at the age of 36?

My mom was a dancer in the 1930's/40's and knew Lupe (professionally, not socially). She said she was actually very nice, but with a Latin flair for drama, and a bit uninhibited. Apparently, a lot of Lupe's reputation was carefully cultivated.

Her suicide would have been such an insult to the studios, if she did drown that at least they could cover up. I remember seeing Clayton Moore at a celebrity fan event, during the interview he was asked about his affair with Lupe. He said he never expected her to go for a swim. Who knows.

I'm so glad that story is fake! I heard it from my mom when I was little and always felt bad for this actress. My mom grew up post depression and told me stories about Saturday afternoon matinee and how a nickle bought a coke, popcorn and 2-3 hours of movies, serials and news clips. A whole Saturday afternoon for 5cents. She knew all the stars and her friends collected Hollywood magazines that sold each studios line up of actors and actresses -- it was a whole different hollywood movie industry then --- seems surreal now.

The recorded lecture by Dr. Murray Banks (circa 1966 or so) entitled "How to Live with Yourself, or What to do Until the Psychiatrist Comes" addresses the Lupe Valez suicide. The good doctor says in words to the effect that a mentally well adjusted person would have killed the lover that jilted her, and not herself.

Actually, This information is slightly wrong, Lupe was found dead on her bedroom floor, NOT on her bed, and i have the coroners photos to prove it, which i found on the internet, and she was wearing a dress that she had worn the night before when she had a last dinner with 2 friends Venita Oakie and Estelle Taylor, unknown to them she had planned to commit suicide after they left, and was found and photographed lying on her bedroom floor the next morning in the same dress she wore the night before.

I think you may be mistaking the coroner’s photos of Carole Landis for Lupe Velez. If the pictures you saw were of a blonde wearing a white blouse and a checked skirt, that’s Carole Landis. I couldn’t seem to find any coroner’s photos of Lupe Velez. I could only find pictures of her in her coffin. But I could be mistaken and Lupe Velez’s death scene photos could be somewhere on the internet that I couldn’t find.

@@katrinaolsen2444 Sorry to say but i'm not, i have seen the Carole Landis Photos, and she is Laying in front of a cupboard, where as Lupe Velez is Lying on her bedroom floor on her back wearing a frilly nearly full length gown, looking as though they could just pick her body up and put her in her coffin the way she was, but unfortunately it didnt happen that way , if i had your email address i would send you a copy of the photos for you to see for yourself.

@@markwilliams49 Thank you for your response. I remember googling Lupe Velez death photos, years ago. (Because of that terrible rumor about how she died) And Carole Landis’s death scene photos came up. I didn’t even know who Carole Landis was at the time. Or the circumstances behind her death and that Rex Harrison likely could have saved her. Supposedly he walked in on her after she had ingested the pills and before she had died. But simply left her to die instead of calling an ambulance. And one of Rex Harrison’s wives also committed suicide. I had no idea he was such a terrible person before reading about the Carole Landis situation. And how badly he behaved in general.

No Mama Cass wasn’t as dramatic. She suffered being overweight and was heart broken that the other male singer of her band had a romance with Michelle Philips instead of her. It wasn’t easy for her to seduce. And she did beg a man she was into to date her and then got pregnant but she wasn’t nearly suicidal at all. She was talented, highly intelligent with a great sense of humor. As she said, she had a peaceful life until that day. Michelle said that she died a happy woman. So not as dark.

She obviously was distraught over her situation, as her end was contradictory to her stated "faith". Abortion was against Catholicism, killing her child in that way was a terrible SIN, she wrote, BUT she killed her child and herself with an overdose of Seconal. Suicide is a great sin in Catholicism, too. She was beautiful and wild and it is a tragedy that she had no one to turn to for help and love and advice during her time of fatal turmoil.

Tragic end. She was too emotional with a temper definitely. Like divorce, raising a child all by yourself wasn’t seen well. She didn’t want to face people who would point fingers at her. She could have been a pioneer to show that it’s possible but it was too much for her. That this man left her pregnant just killed her and then he got cancelled. Morality of those days. She had a torrid affair with Gary Cooper.

People are so crazy about real-life dark stuff that that's probably one of the reasons the story is so popular (whether it's true or NOT).

The British often ‘mispronounce’ words to our accepted way of pronunciation. They constantly misplace the emphasized syllables. One I recently heard several times is ‘contribute’ for which they say CON-tri-bute. Weird and funny.......

Generally more women attempt suicide than actually succeed. Men don’t try as frequently but are more successful when they do. It may have been she expected to be found and ‘saved’ in dramatic fashion. As an aside, if a woman ‘suicide’ shoots herself in the head suspect murder. Women typically shoot in the heart, men choose the head. It’s a psychological thing…something thought to relate to their not wishing to mess up their looks.

Lupe Velez (1st time I've heard of her tbh) reminds me of Rita Hayworth. She's not as beautiful as Hayworth, but no one (except Dietrich) is.

Please edit this: "...She put on one of HER most beautiful clothes, lay down on her silk-covered bed, placed roses around her, took HER crucifix in her right hand, then clasped her hands together and waited for death. It sounds a bit like a kitschy melodrama, but that was the reality. But who was Lupe Vélez, and why did SHE decide to take HER own life at the age of 36?"....

Not Quite, she had on a frilled dress and lay down on her bedroom floor after taking the pills, NO crucifix or flowers, as i have seen and now have the coroners photos that i discovered some years ago on the internet. and it was a wooden floor as well.
