Consider this: Jordan missed most of his sophomore season in the NBA with a broken foot. Then he missed most the season when he returned from his first retirement just before the '95 playoffs. Which means Jordan accomplished all of the major milestones in his career in only 11 complete seasons with the Bulls. Just ponder that for a second.

Kobe's 81 point performance has been ranked up there with the basketball gods for some time now, it truly is one of a kind. But when you look at MJ's 63 point performance vs. Boston in the playoffs, is it possible that, all things considered, it was more impressive? Thanks to www.theobrownmusic.com for the idea. I generally love both performances so I had never even considered comparing them, but when he brought it to my attention, I agreed that it'd make an interesting video. So what do you think? For those saying MJ 69 point game would've been a better comparison, I disagree, that's a losing battle to me. That performance is missing many of the big points it needs to be able to go over an 81 point game, we can't just start ranking anyone who scored high against a tougher team over 81 points. This performance not only included one of the GOAT teams, but was also off injury in his second year, in the playoffs. Those are the qualities that build it's case against Kobe's game. If we just start looking at any high scoring game vs. Kobe's 81, you're able to make the argument for a lot of performances then and to me you really can't put that many up there with his. Jordan's Boston game is truly a special case. *Also, I wanted to make it clear that I completely understand if you take Kobe's performance, because by the stats, it was a better all around performance, there is no reason to be emotional or defense if you took Kobe and I took MJ. I laid out my reasons why MJ's impressed me slightly more, but I can totally see where Kobe's has the edge as well. Looking at the vote in the video, it's about half and half on who's was more impressive so some of us agree and some of us don't.*

I'm gonna go with Jordan's 63 point game. It was the playoffs, they were playing under 1986 rules so hand-checking and all was legal making it tougher to score inside, it was against one of the best teams ever with the 1985-86 Boston Celtics, and it was at the Boston Garden where that Celtics team was at its best with a 40-1 record that year.

To me, Kobe's 81 was more impressive because of the fact that he almost reached the 100 point record that wilt set! Don't get me wrong, MJs performance was legendary and Only he can do that kind of stuff against the 86 celtics, but It's only because a lot more people have gotten 60+ points in their career (Lebron, melo, T-Mac, Kobe many times) and there are only two people that have achieved 81+ points. I think one thing that ought to be considered Dom2k, Kobe's 05-06 lakers were 45-37, even though with Kobe, they were 45-35, with 2 losses without him vs jazz, and Mike's 20 yrs prior, was 30-52, but in the 18 games mike played, bulls were 9-9. So not only is Kobe's 81 is more impressive, he didn't need overtime, it was all in regulation. Plus Mike's 86 bulls in the playoffs, as an 8th seed, got swept 0-3 by boston, while Kobe won 3 games in his first round series as a 7th seed vs suns, after having a 3-1 lead. Kobe edge in the scoring, and with his team.

If any of you youngster's think Klay Thompson 60 is more Impressive than anything MJ ever done, it's just that, you're young. Klay cant score 60 like MJ could because he doesnt have a variety of shot making ability, like footwork, post up fade away's, aggressive drive's to the basket and dunks etc. He has to rely on screen's and wide open shot's to score in bunch'es. You will never see him size a player up and drop em in their face consistently like MJ did, because that's not his game. That's not being a dominate player, maybe a dominate shooter, it's a difference. Ya'll youngster's need to learn the overall aspect of what being a dominate player is and not thinking scoring is the only thing that is impressive. im 50 yrs. old and a true basketball junky and admire all of the players being spoke about in these debate's but if you're not old enough to have seen them play, you should'nt comment based on you tube clips. All this nonsense about weak era's, zone defense's, bigger,stronger era, non athletic era , more athletic era is BS because when it come's down to it, none of that has ever won a championship and the non athletic guy's always seem to win the DPOY award except for Jordan. Dwight Howard and Olajuwan at center. Like Tony Allen, Bruce Bowen, Rodman, Marc Gasol, Mourning, Mutombo, KG etc. Great's like Kobe, Wade, Lebron, Paul George, Mcgrady and Vince to mention a few, have never won it. You need to factor in that Kobe wasn’t a starter for two years and wasn’t the first scoring option until his 9th year in the league. He was forced to feed Shaq which held him back scoring wise for 8 years. Kobe was already regarded as the best player in the league by 2001 and he wasn’t the first scoring option. Already had Playoff games of 45+ as a 22 year old. Jordan’s scoring numbers only look better than Kobe’s career wise (regular season & Playoffs) because he had the green light from day 1. Jordan may be great but he can’t touch Kobe scoring wise. 81 in 41 minutes 62 in 3 quarters. Jordan scored 63 in a playoff game, which is still the all time record for a playoff game against one of the best teams in NBA history. Kobe scored 81 against the Raptors in a regular season game where they were instructed to single cover him because the coach was an idiot. Jordan, easily.

Kobe's was slightly more impressive. I don't think I witnessed a more sensational performance. It's not only that he scored 19 short of 100 (Wilt's record) but the WAY he was scoring. The array of shots, display of inner will and his athletic prowess. On top of the fact that the Laker team was soo shit that year they were trailing that Raptors squad during most of the game... AT HOME! Smfh

People STILL don't understand how unbelievable KB was. The 81 wasn't even as impressive as Kobe's *62 in 3 Qs vs Dallas* in 2005, I went to both games. So, he outscores the entire opposing team's first 36 minutes - in just 32 minutes of f play in that game - then sits his ass down for the 12 remaining minutes - and still wins the game. Let that sink in....No OTs - and he was subbed in that game at some point so he did it in under a full 3 Quarters. Thing is: MJ never scored at that rate - *nobody* in the entire history of professional basketball has, except Wilt, ONE TIME - and that was a circus show achievement, not in any sense a competitive game.

you've got some serious myopia if you think that 63 beats 81... his 81 is the greatest - not the second greatest - THE Greatest performance in NBA history!! you're insane to think that 7 from 3pt land is some how possibly a detractor from his performace. it just shows how much a better shooter he is. His ability to get to the rim, seemingly at will, shows his superior court IQ. the dunks, transition play, defensive effort - the full arsenal on display in a single game, nothing like it. In what world can any other performance compare to it? not to mention the fact that it's 81 frickin points! a two year old broken foot - means it aint broke no mo! leave that part of your reasoning at home - that car don't go. play off games, due to the elongated nature of the task facing NBA teams, typically don't allow for individual high scoring performances. usually, if a player scores a huge amount of points, it means his team is blowing out the other team. the smart thing to do then would be to rest him for the next game. the fact that MJ couldn't put them away in regulation means he had to do it rough. No 3pt game, had to drive it in the lane, getting fouled, shooting free throws - not a lot of skill involved. he wouldn't got to 63 without the 2OT! AND.. he coped the L like a champ! i mean, whats the point in dropping 63 if you lose?! in stark contrast, kobe's method of punching to the gut to lower an opponents defenses by getting to the rim meant that defenders had to hang off him (gotta respect the first step) left him wide open to take the second half 3's that ultimately got him the double nickle - single most points scored in a half. and i mean - 81 in regulation and the W... are you freaking kidding me? i really like your videos but you've got a lot of 'ain't saying nothin, but...', and when you dismiss an accomplishment like this so out of hand, raising external issues as a valid criteria for on court performance - you cheapen your brand dom, you're cheapening it!

First of all Jordan is being guarded more often than not by a midget in Dennis Johnson, midget in Danny Ainge, extremely slow of foot Larry Bird. Let them guard Kobe and he would have got 90+. Let them guard Kobe and go into 2OT and Kobe going for 100+. Kobe was being guarded by 6'8 Jalen Rose most of the game, taller than Kobe and a decent athlete. Kobe rarely given chances to be guarded by shorter players.

Jordan Clark, I didn't like either player and I'm a Lakers fan. However, 81 is better than 63. Also, MJ played for over a decade and with their 72 win season, they alsy played weak teams. Again, no matter how you slice it, 81 is better than 63.

robbereal1982 Lmffo box & 1? Are you fucking serious. If you can't handcheck someone like MJ your & 1 on that island is getting DESTROYED. MJ was too strong, too fast, too quick, with too great of footwork, and could hit anything 22 feet and in. You leave 4 players to screen that & 1 off him and an entirely open key (because no corners of that shit box will ever close on him fast enough) he'd absolutely break Wilt's single game record, and season average record. This isn't about your skillset, which I'm sure get locked down by garbage ass box & 1 all day lmffo. Jordan would fucking destroy box & 1. The only teams that slowed him down did so because they could handcheck him and his teammates, push them around to disrupt and clog lanes, and then break off to hard foul MJ in an era where touch fouls weren't called. You need to watch footage of the league from the beginning of the 80s thru the mid 90s. David Aldridge himself stated that the rule changes in 2001 were to open up the lane and allow for more exciting play (because ratings were down after MJ left again and no one could create anything close to the same excitement as he did without rule changes chaining defenders to make penetration easier for perimeter players). You need to sit down bro.

Jordan played through 2 overtimes, if kobe played through those two overtimes he would have 100+, this is not a comparable topic to me, the different era is way to complicated, The celtics allowed 104.7 ppg, that's .7 more points than the raptors but yet the argument is made about better defense, Look at the film, Jordan in fact did have open shots most of which the defender didn't even put a hand up, all he did was close out the gap and even then he was too late. as a matter of fact if the raptors 104.0 ppg allowed was compared to the 80s teams they would be 2nd in opponents points allowed so i can't see how that is a valuable argument. Micheal played 53 minutes and shot 53% while Kobe played only 41 minutes which is not even equivalent to a full game and shot 60% from the field kobe also shot and made less free throws. 81 points in 41 minutes!!! are u kidding me that's by far better than 63 in 53 minutes, no comparison.
@Dom2k168 жыл бұрын
For the adjustment, that simply means teams were scoring much more back then than in 06 (about 10 more ppg to be exact) If you were to stick the Raptors in that era, they would likely give up far more than 104 ppg.
@courage20028 жыл бұрын
But that makes no sense, if the celtics where giving up more points than the raptors and they were 3rd in opponents points scored then that means that everybody from 4-30 was allowing more than 104.7 ppg which is way more than the raptors 104.0 which was 29th. U may be wondering why i just said all that, well back in the day wasn't the defense suppose to be tougher with all those rules hand checking, and it was supposedly suppose to have better defense with the original big man etc. That means the defense had to have been better in 06 as the leading scorer in 06 was the suns with 108 ppg. I can't see how the defensive argument is valid, there where 14 teams avg more than the suns 108 ppg including the lakers who lead the league with 117 ppg. The warriors in 2015-2016 weren't even avg that much and they took 31.6 3 pointers per game and make 13.1 compared to the lakers 5.
@courage20028 жыл бұрын
***** Exactly my point, so if the zone defense gives up fewer points than the Celtics regular man to man, then technically isn't it the better defense?
@40III5 жыл бұрын
Courage !!!! They give more credit to Jordan because of the allure of that Celtics team and because it was the Playoffs. But in reality like you said if you watch the footage you can clearly see that the defense of that time is overrated especially this Celtics team when you factor in pace. There was no zone and mostly man to man like you see in that 63 point game. Kobe’s game was better because it was done in fewer minutes in a slower paced game with no overtime. And how does one try to discredit the 81 point game because it was against the lowly Raptors but overlook that only a month prior he had 62 in just 3 quarters against the top team out West that year (Dallas)? We already know that’s another 80 point game if Kobe played the 4th quarter.

This is almost insanity at its finest. Kobe would be more than capable of scoring 63 on ANY team in the playoffs if he was allowed to. I'm a big MJ fan but this video is just ridiculous. You mean to tell me, that a guy who scored 81 points on DIFFICULT shots and was down 18 at one point and made 7 3 pointers in that very game had a less impressive showing than a guy who played more minutes and still lost the game? I understand he played the great Celtics, but if you actually watch both games, you'll see how difficult Bryant's shots were. Difference is, that Kobe was in a zone.. MJ just went for layups and mid range shots. Kobe's game is hands down not only more enjoyable, but more memorable also. No one will ever score 81 again on ANY team. We will manage to see a couple of 60 point performances here and there though. By your logic, Kyrie Irving's 41 point performance against the Warriors was more impressive than Klay Thompson's 60 in 29. And I'm a huge Kyrie fan, but when a player is in THAT kind of zone, it's more fun to see no matter what team it's against.

Im a big Kobe fan but one more thing going for MJ is that he did it in Boston, one of the toughest fan bases of all time

Still think Kobe's 81 was better tho. MJ had two OT's and its not like Kobe couldn't do the same in lesser time. He outscored the Mavs (who also won the championship the year) with 62 points in 3 quarters
