Mike, thanks for doing this analysis. I had a CAD e100s-and sent it back within a week. I had floor noise like yours. I changed pre-amps and software. No difference. Much higher floor noise than C 414, SM57 or Ocktava 319-and I was expecting much better performance than any of these mics.

Can I just say. Amazing vocal quality aside. Your lighting is *great*. Really makes your eyes stand out :)

I was one of the first VOAs to use the E100s loved it for almost three years and then it got noisy and dull. So many of these mics are shipped with defects or go bad quickly. I'm sorry you had this experience too. Also, their self-noise rating isn't fair because the mic has such low output. Thanks for sharing this. I like your videos!

Thanks so much for doing this video! I was just about to ship mine to CAD for warranty work for the same issue. Sounds like their "lowest in class" noise floor comes with a hiss exclusion... weird. I can take out the noise with RX, and I love the character it gives my voice. Just a little aggravated at having to deal with internal noise in post. I guess the mitigating fact is that all my quiet mics take lots of EQ tweaking and still don't sound as good as this mic. So I just smile and tell myself that 30 seconds of denoiser setup beats hours of EQ fiddling.

As a total noob, all I can say is "thank you." I'm going to be setting up an audio system for my gaming stream and your videos are invaluable. I'm leaning toward an SM7B. Again, thank you.

Have you tried recording directly into Reaper? Just to make sure it's not the recorder? I'm curious now! :)

I'm thinking the gain was too high and that is normal noise floor. Especially if you are picking up a watch click. That mic is not designed to record watch clicks that far away.

I would say buy a better xlr cable or change pre-amps if your mic is still too noisy. I use a blue spark and it used to be a bit noisy, but after buy a cable that was more than $25 it's noise floor is much lower.

Hmmm, that hiss is much louder than mine, granted, I am using a high end interface and preamp, but the cad is an excellent mic that's great for the price.

Hi Mike! You make great videos! I´d love to see a rode NT1-a review. I´m interested in how you think about it, cause you can probably tell alot more about it than other youtubers.

Y'know what? You're videos are so informative, that I am legitimately worried that the "Voice Over Illuminati" are going to swoop in and shut down your channel, and we'll never hear from you again. You're like the Masked Magician from the late 90's, showing the world the "secrets" behind all the magic. Keep it up, and please....PLEASE don't let the VO Illuminati get to you. Me and my fellow VO newbies are learning a lot.

thanks for all of your videos.. would you please provide some tips on reducing / nullifying mouth clicks , mouth noise while recording? what hacks do you apply to reduce them at recording level itself? it would be a great help ... thanks you again..
@EditEdward
@EditEdward 7 жыл бұрын
I second this. Mouth noise is a fiddly one and so many of the reduction tutorials online are next to useless or muffle / lisp the whole sound. That said, I've got several voice friends with strong (i.e. ignores pop shield) plosive P's and one with an immense whistling S (as in it's a momentary pure whistle, rather than a general hiss) - but all the usual strategies e.g. changing tongue position don't seem to be helping. Starting to think tutorials not from Mike might just be flawed haha

If you are on about the wet saliva click sounds the advice given is don't drink tea, coffee, juice and whatnot before or during a section. Stick to water, pure apple juice and some other specific things I can't remember. Also green apples are in almost every recording station for this reason (apparently something's in the green ones that help). In post I find with a spectral display of my audio I can paint out said mouth clicks (they appear as vertical lines) and plosives (they appear as triangle stabs at the bottom) with surprising good results.
@EditEdward
@EditEdward 7 жыл бұрын
Really? I tend to find green apples give my mouth a "gloopy" feel same as orange juice, and everything comes out wet sounding. Maybe that's just my mouth being weird as none of my other guys get it. Respect for the advice Re: painting though!

+OverEnglishMan As far as professionals say, yes really. I found it odd myself when I first heard recording studios acted like they're sponsored by green apples, but apparently it's very common. I mean "paint out" quite literally. When viewing speech with a spectral display (Like at 5:30 showing loudness by colour and frequency by height) you can fix audio by sight alone using tools akin to digital painting (like the spot healing brush) and they can support digital art tablet features (like more stylus pressure making the brush more opaque).

To me a part of that noise sounds like a switching mode power supply or digital video cable in the highs, do you have a monitor (screen) nearby? Some data lines to smaller LCD's in devices can emit a very broadband noise sounding like hiss as well. This type of noise can also be coupled to the internals of the preamp, moving it a few inches or rotating it 90 degrees can make a few decibels difference. Have you tried recording your preamp's own noise floor, nothing connected, as a comparison? Just thinking along :)

It's not the mic, it's the zoom recorder. It's preamps are noisy.

I'm curious if your noise floor might vary depending on the pre. I use the Zoom H5 for portable recording and I also have a Tascam DR70D. Both are great, but I've noticed my Zoom produces a slightly more noticeable noise floor when paired with my TLM103 vs the DR70D.

Loving the videos. Question for you. Would you know where I can pick up a shock mount for the e100? All that I see online are the generic looking shockmounts. I have a Mic and want more factory looking mount. Thanks.

I just pruchsed my first CAD e100 it is used and I am using a zoom H5 and a new 3foot monoprice xlr cable. I haven't been able to do even one recording yet becuase it instantly made a thumping noise every two seonds? I have no idea why please help moved the striaght line middle switch to the left and it conitnued only slower? It's making this sound without recording. Do you have to have the battteries in and charged? can you turn a switch for phantom only power?

scratch this question.... rechargeable batteries dead in the CAD. This caused all of these issues.
