Was the Chainsaw Man ANIME (Season 1) TRASH?

Chainsaw Man blew all expectations out of the water, setting the Crunchyroll servers on fire because so many people were trying to watch the show not once but twice. If you weren’t a Chainsaw Man fan before, you were now because people wouldn’t shut up about it. This went on for 12 whole weeks till the final of Season 1 aired in late December, doing as much damage as humanly possible, pushing manga sales so high that Scientists had to invent new numbers for it, MAPPA had so much money that they funded the entirety of WW3, The President of the United States Joe Biden declared October 12th national Chainsaw Man day, world peace was achieved, Berserk finally got a good anime adaption, Bloodborne 2 released to critical acclaim, the third impact happened in real life, and I became the most subscribed channel on KZbin, the end. No of course none of that, unfortunately, happened. Contrary to what everyone thought was going to happen, Chainsaw Man, just kind of came and went. Pretty soon people began to refer to the CSM anime as overhyped, overrated, and the gravest of all accusations… mid. Some even began to blame Studio MAPPA, saying that they delivered a bad adaptation of the source material. MAPPA themselves seemed to believe so as well. As mentioned before, they had dumped a lot of money into Chainsaw Man expecting a massive payday. According to the CEO of MAPPA, the anime was a financial success but didn’t have the same “cultural impact” that he had hoped for. It didn’t cause a huge ripple effect like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer did, it didn’t breathe new life into the industry by introducing thousands of new Anime fans, and most importantly the CEO couldn’t buy his 15th yacht and pay his workers properly, not that he was going to do the second one anyways. Ever since the anime finished airing I’ve always wondered what exactly caused it to not do as well as some of its other breakout anime contemporaries. To answer that question I think we first need to examine another question, was the anime a bad adaptation of the Manga?

Season 1 was brilliant but way too short. Had it been the full season instead of just half the normal number of episodes, I think CSM would've garnered more of the sales and buzz that MAPPA is so concerned about. They teased Reze at the very end and I wished the story had continued instead of having to wait a few more years for season 2. IMHO, while I really appreciate all the cool ED animation and awesome songs, having a different one for each episode seemed a tad excessive to me. That money could've been utilized a bit better elsewhere, like more episodes.

Yeah it lacked that punch that it needed by the end of the first season. If you were a CSM reader beforehand the future devil already did that for you but if your anime only it's just kinda okay-ish. I don't know why they tried that with the makima delivering the eyeballs because it's not suppose to be that BIG moment yet. It sits in the background for now until you get to the big reveal that makes you second guess.

Chainsaw man manga’s strongest comings are its ultra fast action pace and quick plot twists. The anime version perfectly avoid the these traits which made chainsaw man and Fujimoto’s manga different from all other manga. The anime is decent on its own right considering how much production value was put into the show. But again, if a studio put that much effort and budget into a anime adaptation, any show with a half decent story will look good on screen. However, it is a trash take on the source material when you can see how much potential was wasted.

Honestly my biggest gripe was a poor adaption of a lot of the action. Mappa has shown that their use of cgi is amazing and have utilized it very well. However, the cgi used here and the choreography was very lack luster. These are the areas an adaption must hit as anime can transcend these parts from a manga. I loved a lot of the cinematic approaches and it was an amazing touch. But everytime the action got ramped up it just visually bland and shaky movement. Mappa please feed your people, train your animators, let them see their families. You have show such promise with your other work. Chainsaw man was so close and I’m hoping we see a better pick up for the rest of the adaption for part 1

I'm a Japanese viewer and I can confirm you that people who are disappointed by the anime style are NOT a minority. Evidence being that although the original Manga sells well after the adaptation, but the anime's BD sells plumbed. Fans of the original manga series were so pissed off that you can see vocal arguments everywhere related to the anime, even in the most recent movie trailer you can find half of the comments are talking about replacing the director.

The Chainsaw man anime was held back by bad direction. The art style was less stylized/expressive, the colors are mute, voice acting was more “realistic”. Its almost as if the directors were embarrassed in the source material and wished they were adapting something else. The only time this isn’t the case is in the end credits where they were emulating chainsaw man and experimenting with visuals.

I really don’t think it’s very complicated. There’s no lasting hype and the series wasn’t as big a success as it could have been because 12 episodes is absolutely nothing. As someone who became a fan because of the anime, I remember feeling like I was on the verge of something amazing but it just ends. I read through the manga and soon found out that yes, I was about to watch something special. 24 episodes, even with the anime’s slower pace, could have brought the story to the end of the international assassin’s arc and no one would be left wondering why the manga fans hyped everything up so much.

As an anime only, I prefer csm to jjk by a long shot. I enjoy jjk more on an episodic basis, but I think more fondly on csm. It's because of the pacing and character moments. In jjk, there's a whole cast of characters but only a few I feel like I really know and even fewer I really like. In csm I just like more of the cast. It might not be as bombastic and exciting every episode, but it's a lot more memorable. Pretty much the only thing I can remember about jjk is the animation, the fights, gojo, and the characters I like such as geto and maki.

I've never seen a film adaptation of a book that did the book justice. I HAVE seen anime adaptations of manga that did the manga justice: Haikyuu, HunterXhunter. Chainsaw man is the only one I'd call a perfect adaptation in that it doesn't copy or elevate the original into a new medium, but translates it and makes it excellent in a different way specific to the medium. Every frame of this anime is a work of love. I'vve rewatched some scenes more times than I could count, just admiring the movement, voice acting, angles, the feel of the scene. Even if I didn't like the story, that alone would've earned, as it has, my deep respect. Who cares if it's not as popular as shounen battle anime? Real excellence almost never is.

Season 1 was great, but it did not capture the energy of the manga. The cinematic direction is a great idea, but what does that even mean? Movie directors have varied direction styles, and I think the CSM anime's "cinematic" direction just meant to make things more "realistic". I think this "realistic" form of direction really clashes with how much energy and craziness Fujimoto puts into the manga. There were a lot of scenes that were toned down and made not as funny or faced paced/energetic as they were in the manga. The one that immediately comes to my mind is when Denji wants to go back into the hospital room to grab his manga when Aki is crying. In the manga this is made to be comedic, with Denji being slumped over and thinking the situation is awkward. In the anime, this scene is played straight with dramatic music and muted colors. Also, sometimes the anime just completely ignores really funny moments in the manga, like when Kobeni suddenly appears after Aki kills the Snake Devil. In the anime, we see Kobeni before the operation to kill the Yakuza begins which completely ruins the joke. These are just two examples, to which there are many. The first part of Chainsaw Man isn't a "slow burn" so there should never be any scene that feels "dull" or "boring". I feel like the anime took itself a little too seriously, Chainsaw Man is meant to be crazy, fast paced, and weird. I think this is evident in the first episode, where its really focused on how horrible Denji's situation with the Yakuza is. In the manga, Denji's situation is meant to be seen as sad, but also a little exaggerated and over the top because of how just how horrible his life is. Chainsaw Man is my favorite manga, so I hope that future seasons are able to better capture Fujimoto's style, because that's what makes Chainsaw Man so special.

I've read the manga twice and I'm going to be honest about three things - That really fast pacing that people seem to love about the manga happens only in the second half of part 1 ( i.e what the anime hasn't covered yet ). Uptil then it's just paced well. - The manga is far more grounded and serious than people give it credit for. The last thing I'd call it like some do is light-hearted when it honestly felt pretty dark from beginning to the end. Heck, even the humour is dark and never really clashed with that tone ( an example of humour clashing tone would be the chibi moments in jjk ). Having some very funny moments doesn't make your series a gag manga. In CSM's case it's just having a rather wicked sense of humour, all of which was funny because of how straight it was all played ( just like the anime did ). - Another thing that made certain things funny to begin with was how unpredictable a lot of it was. But when you already know the story, then I don't see how it's going to be either just as funny or more funny. ( especially in CSM's case where you honestly can't predict 90% of it ). So the anime was never going to be able to be better in this case anyway.

Trash? Excuse me but even if you're doing this to get more views and it's a quote used by others that you used in your title because you wanna express how wrong their opinion is, that's blasphemy! Chainsaw Man Season 1 has the *_BEST_* Seasonal anime's animation, before the Demon Slayer fans eat me I'm just gonna go out and say that Chainsaw Man has better overall animation because outside of the battles, Demon Slayer doesn't have any good animation in particular, it's mediocre at best but Chainsaw Man in and out of battle has amazing animation, the way Mappa coloured it, the way the characters move, the details on everyday items such as, roads, vehicles, building, tiles etc are all Top Tier, the way the chainsaws move when Denji's in his Chainsaw Mode is just brilliant and fantastic, mindblowing even! How they managed to combine CG and 2D animation so flawlessly is such a great feat! It also had this kind of mysterious, dark and cold vibe in the first few episodes and it fit just right in since it was airing on Oct - Jan (Fall/Winter Seasons), As a Manga Reader who has been reading the manga since 2021, This was the best possible outcome for Chainsaw Man, I doubt anything except JJK S2 will reach it's level of details and animation.

The thing that people don’t get about the anime is that its author has a DEEP love for american cinema. He makes tons of references to it. I think that the cinematic approach to this show is amazing, mostly because it starts off kinda goofy so you’re left thinking “why is this childish show look so good?” When its more of a thing for the later half of the show where it matures and the cinematic aspect of it makes sense. As mentioned, chainsaw man is a good story, the thing is: it's not like Jujutsu Kaisen or other Animes in the likes. You can go for a few chapters of Chainsaw Man where the characters are simply hanging out with each other or doing something else. Case in point: - Chapter 39-41 has no action going on. All it does is show characters doing their own daily action. Jujutsu Kaisen blows up now, but there's action back to back to back.

as an anime only, I didn't get why the hell was the hype so big for this show. By the exposure and just social media talk that it received, I expected the world. 10/10 animation, steins-gate mind bending plot, Monster level of worldbuilding and realism, psycho pass futuristic dystopia, the whole plate. This level of hype was deserved for the anime that actually would be better than FMA Brotherhood and would top MAL best anime of all time from now on. The anime aired, and I couldn't believe the piece of trash shit show was compared to the hype. Main character is just a loser simp and the other guy is a sasuke/fushiguro stereotype, 0 personality. I'm waiting for the next season now, maybe it will be better but the first season didn't even reach 4 out of 10 points on the hype scale that it had.

It has nothing to do with anything MAPPA did or didn't do. They did a great job with the material they had to work with. The anime made a huge splash that ended in a whimper of indifference because of the _massive_ misstep the story takes at episode 8. It was a pointless twist for cheap shock value that took all of the very interesting character dynamics the series had been building towards and getting us invested in up to that point, and tossed it all in the trash. It took the evolving motivation journey Dinji was on, and made it utterly insignificant in the face of major deaths. Worst of all, it basically guarantees more of the same, spoiling that Power and What's-his-name's inevitably horrible deaths are a matter of when, not if, while also letting us know to not bother getting invested in any new characters either. The show is like a prank that pulls you in, gets you on board, and then pulls the rug out from under all of it as if to say: "Oh you were interested in what was going on? You were starting to like these characters? Well get punked bitch!". Then it substitutes in rolling out a bunch of crazy new demon people we already know are completely disposable as if they were jangling keys. If you were still invested and excited about the series after that, it's because you don't have enough media literacy to see what's going on, or because you really like edgy character slaughter and crazy demon people for their own sake. And that's fine, but that's going to exclude most of the potential audience for a show like this. The problem is the source material. It barely breaks half the sales per volume of Spy x Family for a reason. Don't be surprised if those season 2 rumors are never more than that.

Manga the art is 4/10 the pacing 2/10 the tone 4/10 panel usage 1/10 protag 2/10 it's just a total mess and every character feels like the dialogue they say is forced and just rammed exposition to try and sloppily half explain some part of the CSM world lore. Or they are character that exist to die. What the real crazy thing is the fact people over analyze the series and claim it's a "battle shonen in disguise" but in fact a "deep character study". When denji doesn't progress at all and is extremely emotionally vapid. It just seems to be a "oh my gawd that's so me" for incels, where the fans can smugly pretend it's "mature" because it has sexual nonsense every 4 panels and movie references that aren't even that old for chirst sake...the big Lebowski? wooooow PULP FICTION WOAH. It's much like fujimoto's other work a outlet for whatever sexual or other frustration he's currently feeling. Like fire punch....Please tell me why in fire punch in the first chapter, the sister asks the brother to have sex with her and give her a baby.... it's the same reason fujimoto made all the horsemen women etc...the guy is just blegh, he's like if god spilled a person. Fujimoto: "if I can't draw better than everyone in my class within 2 years I'm going to kill everyone" the Anime Art 6/10 CGI 2/10 Fallout filter 2/10 removal of life from the few humorous moments 0/10 protag 2/10 There's a reason the sexual movie spin off of this "dildo-man" sold more blue rays. Now fujimoto says he doesn't want to draw because he has some money. bleeegh

@@sexy1735 Ghost in the shell, Magnetic rose, Basically anything That doesn't think a CGI model with some shaders and drawn over look good? like for instance CSM the anime looks similar to the berserk movies....which are kinda wonky at best so yea a 6/10...that's not a bad score it's a mid score...

Chainsaw Man has some of the best paneling in manga, I don't know how you could even say that lol. The CSM manga is a masterpiece, and just because a piece of media isn't "serious" or seen as "mature" doesn't mean it doesn't have themes and more to say. Chainsaw Man very obviously is full of symbolism, themes and concepts which influence how the story progresses.
