As a biologist and very basic guidelines for how genes and evolution works, it makes sense that the Emperors’ genes for passing on the “perpetual” genetic trait would be sporadic in his offspring because depending on the mother some genetic traits will appear, while other genetic traits remain dormant or disappear all together. Since this is how it works in real life, and if the Primarchs really are the Emperor’s biological children, they would all have the “perpetual” trait, whether that trait is active like it is in Vulcan or apparently dormant in all the other Primarchs who don’t actively show their “perpetual” power, it only becomes activated once the Primarch dies and it somehow keeps their soul intact. Obviously, there is a lot of sci-fi genetic modification taking place in 40K and so I’m not sure how much actual science applies, but we’re all here to worship the god Emperor.

With all the genetic editing the Emperor did I can see him intentionally removing the Perpetual phenotype from most of the Primarchs, especially from those that were designed to be more aggressive and violent. I think it isn't a coincidence that the only confirmed Perpetual Primarch is also the "nice one". The Big E was trying to prevent a situation like the modern Imperium has to deal with when it comes the active demon Primarchs.

Erda scattering the primarchs caused the heresy to happen, because let take for instance if lorgar was raised by the emperor along with his brothers he wouldn’t have become a religiously obsessed choir boy thus he would not have fallen to chaos. Edit Konrad wouldn’t been a insane Emo maniac and angron wouldn’t have the butchers nails in his skull turning him into a bloodthirsty maniac.
@MichaelLewis-fx8eq

They also wouldn't have had truly human experiences. Erda explains that Big E would have hastened their natural lives to grown adults meant to conquer. Skipping over all that comes naturally. I think that is a very important point. It could be that things would have turned out even worse for humanity in the long run and for all instead of just a few of the Primarchs if Big E's plans had gone unhindered. I know the Primarchs mature exceedingly fast compared to normal humans (this being the genetically enhanced growth) but at least (in Erda's opinion/hopes) being away from the constant war the Emperor wanted to raise them in would make them into more than mere conquering machines.

@@MichaelLewis-fx8eq "It would have turned out even worse for humanity"? How? Currently humanity in the 42nd millennium is literally on the way to extinction. The only way it could be worse is if they actually died out completely. Also, in scattering them Erda turned half of them into conquering daemons who exist solely to destroy civilization, the very thing she sought to stop. We've really gotta stop giving Erda any amount of credit and just admit she got played by Chaos.

Erda’s plot honestly has seemingly gotten worse with each plot revelation, especially now that we know alpharius was raised by emps and was more sane than half his siblings. A big problem has always been gw being unable to decide how bad of a guy big E is and that indecision harms a lot of characters.
@TheSpicyLeg
@TheSpicyLeg Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It seems like GW tries to add moral ambiguity to the Emperor to make the contrast between him and the Ruinous Powers more ambiguous. The problem is that the Ruinous Powers are unambiguously evil, regardless of their individual outcomes. People try all the time to make Chaos ambiguous (i.e. Slaanesh encourages creativity, Khorne honorable combat, Nurgle loves life as much as death, etc) but they’re more like fundamental forces of nature than entities with free will. Slaanesh will always cause a spiral into depravity. Nurgle will always end up with endless death and rebirth like a colony of bacteria. Big E represents moderation to entities where that conception doesn’t exist. Making him morally ambiguous only makes the characters around him confusing, irrational, and illogical.
@azurewraith2585
@azurewraith2585 Жыл бұрын
@@TheSpicyLeg on one hand I think keeping emps ambiguous is somewhat necessary. They’ve written the emperor to be essentially the only hope against chaos but also made him a genocidal megalomaniac who wants to extinguish nearly all life in existence just for a chance at killing chaos. that is a tough line to walk even for amazing writers.
@TheSpicyLeg
@TheSpicyLeg Жыл бұрын
@@azurewraith2585 I agree it is tough, but tough because it is unnecessary. Making Big E a tyrant doesn’t add much, because he will always be preferable to the alternative. The West made an alliance with Joseph Stalin, despite Stalin being an absolutely atrocious human being, because the alternative was worse. It didn’t really matter if Stalin was also found to be a racist in addition to all the other horrible things he was. Furthermore, the grim dark nature we all love is represented by the sad reality that all the things the Imperium does is necessary to them. It is mere survival. In other words, Big E could be a moral exemplar that is kind, benevolent, and caring, and it wouldn’t change how the Imperium runs. He can only make it better. As my dad says, “No one asks the fireman what kind of man he is.” We just want the fireman to put out the fire and rescue our kids from the window. Prefacing the fireman’s arrival by telling the 911 caller that the fireman is a jerk who hates women does nothing to change the dynamic of the situation. If I seem like I’m disagreeing with you, I’m not. I totally see your point. It is just frustrating as making Big E morally ambiguous is a hobby force of mine.

Alpharius was mostly raised by malcador the sigillite, he was definitely more sane than most, but still stupid enough to believe that team Horus was something that could be beneficial for humanity, trying to kill the alien cabal that claims that you have to help destroy your own species to help the universe is always the only answer. Even in a 30k world believing that you can actually know what will happen to a million planets 10.000 years in the future with a 100% certainty 💩 and nothing in the next 10.000 years will change that fact 😀 if Horus wins this doom if the Emperor wins this doom, and just killing the cabal and leaving Davon when Horus soul is in the warp whit Erebus soul would not be a better idea, + 100 others were you are not joining Horus 🤷‍♂️ it is whit the Primarchs and real world people, genes, the environment you grow up in and your own choice (good choice made easier or harder by the genes and environment)that effect you behavior and personality, Angron is the classic example of creation of a sociopath who passes on the gift to his sons, no parents or adults doesn’t have good results in real life or 40k, but growing up in hard times but with a good example to follow like Corvus Corax or Sanguinius seems to have better chance of success.

The reason he chose the Himalayans is precisely because it's on a fault line in mountains. It's unassailable by the ground due to being mountains, and prior to the Unification Wars Big E was fighting other ground-based powers. This is why Dorn's fortifications in the Siege are primarily anti-air, since focusing on that ensured the traitors needed to walk up the mountains to battle, and their numerical advantage was consequently mitigated.

I love the video, thank you for making it! To keep up the discussion: I'd disagree that the imperium, as it ends up, works at all well to protect humanity. It's ruinously inefficient, it offers endless opportunities for rebellions and chaos and genestealer cults to take root, it creates wars it doesn't need to fight, it wastes opportunities to make itself stronger by peaceful interaction with xenos where that would apply, it created it's own biggest enemy in the Chaos forces, and the list goes on. It's like a massively unhealthy person with a gun and a big bag of ammo: "You have twenty diseases" "But I can defend myself with me gun". "Your heart is on the point of failure" "But I can shoot any muggers who come at me". "There are parasites eating your innards" "but I've got me gun, so don't you mess". Saying the Imperium is succeeding in its mission to protect humanity because it churns out endless soldiers and sends them off to fight endless wars is missing the point in the exact same way.
@studentjohn
@studentjohn Жыл бұрын
Or, another way I might argue it: the imperium has persisted for 10,000 years, but that doesn't mean it has been actually _protecting_ humanity for that time - it's done and allowed immense harm to humanity, in a very simple and material sense, of it's own accord. The imperium, in that light, is just another force occupying human-settled space, one that jealously quashed any alternative, true, human civilisations. It is defending it's de-facto slave race, humanity, against it's enemies - that doesn't mean it's defending humanity, it's just defending it's own monopoly on using and abusing it. it's like an abuser conditioning it's victim to believe the abuser is the one defending them - because he keeps the muggers and burglars from getting into the house the abuse happens in.

Dude, i'm so happy I found your channel! Saw my first video on the 2nd/11th primarchs and found y'all fascinating, love a good lore breakdown and way more so when i find out new lore! This was a great video too, I'd read most of the stuff you talked about but found your insights really cool and thought provoking which is what good lore has to accomplish to become good lore or be remembered as lore Going to keep watching for sure, I love how your channel is straight to the point. I've turned off so many lore videos because its flashing cut into excessive digital bullshit and making up for a lack of content/new content with Afterworks and Premiere bullshit. And hosts who're just whoring themselves out begging for likes and subscribes turn me off immediately. You don't do it barebones, that's not a good way to phrase it. You do the presentation justice rather. It all comes from books so a proper presentation is to talk about the lore. Not your merch and your patreon and your website and on and on. You talk about the lore and do it justice and have insights and angles on things and know things I don't know and I'm a huge lore nerd. No nonsense, right to the point, and very effective. Pretty damn perfect man, I appreciate your work up there with Leutin and Adeptus Ridiculous, you have your own angle on things but I love it like I love theirs. Very curious. These added revelations about the Perpetuals and the Emperor's long term plans seem to really underline the parallel between the humanity and the Aeldari, in particular with the reincarnation as something inherent to all Aeldari at the height of their empire. Perhaps that explains why the Emperor grew so cruel and hasty - he saw this civilization that ruled the stars for tens of millions of years to be swallowed by a horrifying god of their own unconscious creation, and realized that humanity was well on the same track had something not be done and fast - hence the Imperial Truth. But all his plan would do, would accomplish the very same thing, scattered primarchs or no - humans have a need to believe into something, and that belief inevitably echoes in the Warp. In fact, it is that very belief that both doomed the Imperium - but also what's keeping it barely alive against all the horrors that have encroached it. And here too does humanity's doom mirror that of the Aeldari...
@samhunter1205
@samhunter1205 Жыл бұрын
The warp mirrors emotion, not just belief, so I don't think theism is that central to any Eldar-style fall - after all, the pre-fall Eldar were largely so hedonistic and self centred that they didn't really worship anything in a traditional religious sense. As for the Emperor's plans, I thought this was pretty clear from Master of Mankind. The Emperor planned to seize control of the webway, freeing humanity from the need for psykers, and then promote the blank gene, altering the human race so that they cast no reflection in the warp. This would starve and massively weaken the Chaos gods and liberate humanity from the temptations of the warp . . . whether or not humanity having no souls would have had any downside is up for debate.

@@SandmanofTerra Oh that would be great! Imagine her just being killed by Perturabo or Angron for abandoning them, or mocked for scattering the Primarchs in the first place by Lorgar. It'd really underscore just how stupid of an addition this character is, and how it does nothing but detract from the Greek tragedy that is the Primarch story. I think it'd be even better if she met Guilliman, and tried to be his mother only to get resoundingly rejected because he already had a mom. One who didn't float his ass upriver and then forget he existed. Erda should really meet all the primarchs--or their graves in the case of the dead ones--so the utter pointlessness of her character can be driven home. Really show how all of the loyalist primachs were whole and good people in spite of her, and all of the chaos primarchs were broken and evil people directly because of her actions. And if she were to meet Alpharius--the one that supposedly grew up alongside the Emperor not the one who was supposedly found--then it'd be the nail in the coffin for how colossally stupid of an act the scattering really is, and underscore how Erda got completely played by Chaos. Alpharius, the son raised directly with the Emperor and Malcador, completely and utterly refutes her argument that the Emperor was a worst option for the primarchs. He grew up happy, sane, and comfortable, and his foundling twin ends up the crazy heretic.

I think Erda was in at least some ways in love with The Emperor/Neoth. She was basically in a relationship with one of the most toxic men ever. She was wrapped up in this emotional mess of a relationship that she eventually ended and fell out of. In an aggressive manner. That there was love. An intoxicating experience. That was toxic and she finally realized that no matter how good his intentions, and how charming he was. The Emperor is/was a terrible person. And he had to be stopped. Or at least slowed down.

I can fully appreciate Erda's position, and how she'd go from willingly aiding The Emperor, to betraying him... She was on board with the goal of building the Imperium at first, until she realised it would involve the annihilation of already existing successful Human civilisations, for no other crime than refusing to bend the knee to the Emperor, since almost any Human civilisation, regardless of how ideologically divergent (such as Mars itself, for example), or even greatly geneticly divergent (Squats, Ogryns and Ratmen, amongst others) from the nascent Imperium was otherwise accepted, as long as they agree to submit almost on first contact... As much as the Emperor might have seen Humanity teetering on a precipice, requiring his brutally hastened approach to reuniting Humanity in The Emperor's mind, Erda obviously could not stand by and be part to what she likely perceived as genocide, regardless how pressingly necessary The Emperor might have believed...

Lets be honest here, the Emperor was a terrible father and a mass murdering monster. Hes just hyper competent. The idea that everything would have been fine if he had his way is silly. He staffed one of the legions with criminals and murderers and when he found his son he made them the official war crimes division, in other words he always planned on having a war crimes division, and always planned on having Conrad Curs in charge of it. He was always going to be a terrible father. He was a tyrannical, abusive, manipulative man who used everything and everyone around him as a tool to achieve his goal. @@DarkThagan Why did he have to have a war crimes division in the first place?
@ZeroNumerous
@ZeroNumerous Жыл бұрын
Because he didn't. The Night Lords were not staffed with criminals and murderers intentionally. The Terran Night's Children--the original Night Lords--were the sons and daughters of massive prison complexes. They were innocent children raised up to Space Marines, not an intentional war crimes division. The Night's Children were deployed against people who broke covenant with the Emperor, whether by flouting the Emperor's laws or continuing evil actions despite him telling them to stop, and used morale-breaking strategies. But they were made a war crimes division by Konrad. Because Konrad was insane. We see in A Lesson in Darkness that the Terran-born Night Lords are brutal, but not insane war criminals. They shattered the enemy morale, but did not hunt them down and murder them after they ran. That was a Konrad addition. Konrad opened up the prisons and lunatic asylums of Nostromo as recruitment options. The Night's Children were combat troops, not terror units, who defeated enemy formations but didn't terrorize enemy civilians. Turns out, some Legions--lookin' at you, Warhounds--are actively made worse by the addition of their primarch.

the thing to remember wih the anathame is that the stolen Kinnebrach sword (damn Erebus) of which it is made, tailors its warp power to kill with a true name. you require the true name to kill with it, even to cause the festering wounds of nurgle that temba did on Horus (he wasn't suppose to kill him so the sword didn't kill him). so in order to kill a perpetual with it you require their true name. the fulgurite which brought Vulcan back didn't kill him, it took Johns perpetual nature to resurrect the ruined body and mind of Vulcan... which then needed the faith of Artellus Numeon to bring him back fully. I still think a shard of an anathame is what is at the tip of Fabius' rod of torment as it is said to be capable of excruciating pain or death at a whispered command.

I think the way the emperor spoke to Guilliman reborn in the throne room was because each seperate shard of his consciousness spoke separately simultaniously. Also, the fact that he called Guilliman his last son/ tool/thing means that he ISN'T the one helping the Lion. That can only mean the emperor's last shard HAS to be the one responsible. That means it's on the other side of the rust and not in contact with the rest of himself on terra. Everyone is blaming her for the demons, but there’s no reason to think that a heresy wouldn’t have happened regardless of her involvement. The emperor intended to send the Primarchs out to war amongst the stars and to do essentially horrific things to non-compliant humans and peaceful aliens. The chance for the primarchs to become corrupted is still completely possible. Maybe different primarchs and for different reasons, but it seems very possible. Also, based on the passage you read she says “he was always right” in the same line of him being arrogant. That doesn’t mean he’s always right more than his attitude of always being “right”. He also admits that there is another who can see the future better than him, implying he could be wrong about something. Also, you can be “right” about something and achieves your goals, but that doesn’t mean it was the only way to achieve them. I could kill someone and take their keys to stop them from getting in a car accident that kills others or I could just detain that person and get them the help they need. Either way, you could look back at your actions and say I did the “right” thing because I was successful in my outcome while discounting the possibility of other paths to that outcome. I think morally she’s in the right regardless of if it led to a bad outcome. There‘a no way to know the outcome if she hadn’t done what she did, but the ends should not justify the means. Also I could see the emperor going even harder if he had the primarchs and begun culling huge swaths of humanity ones he was done with the alien threat because they weren’t pure or proper to his liking. Maybe it could have been a lot worse.

Honestly I quite like the idea that the Emperor is in fact a DAoT creation designed to protect Humanity, like the Eldar suggest, and that potentially Erda had a hand in His creation (hence why their relationship is so strong). The Emperor is much stronger than the other Perpetuals and also seems to exist by other rules, so perhaps He was the ultimate result of the Men of Gold, and was given both a superhuman body and an immense soul through DAoT technology. It would also explain why the other Perpetuals bar Erda don't know much about Him, why the Emperor is so dedicated to Humanity, and why He was using His own Genome to create the Primarch's, Adeptus Astartes, Grey Knights, and Custodes. It would also explain why the Emperor wasn't noticed very early on by the Aeldari (they'd definitely be able to see Him) or other players and influenced or contacted by them. I like this more than the whole "Shaman Suicide" lore, which is a bit outdated now haha.

I rather dislike the idea of some nobody shoehorned in character becomes the biggest thing and important thing in the lore. There’s a reason she’s quickly becoming more hated than Erebus and Lorgar. Her plotlines are stupid and serve zero purpose, the lore was fine before her introduction all she did was add unnecessary context so she could be a character to begin with. The writers are definitely dropping the ball at the climax with adding her. To me Erda doesn’t exist and is a nobody who didn’t do what she did

@@alexbrowne9566 It's not exactly mutually exclusive, clearly Perpetuals can be augmented, changed, or created, and Big E is a bit different from the rest (and He apparently wasn't so far above them before Molech in the first place). But it could also just be false/implanted memories. It would be very fitting for 40k if the Saviour of Mankind, who ended up empowering Chaos even further through His creations, was actually a remnant of DAoT civilization and left unchecked simply went on an insane course. The whole theme is that through their own actions each faction who managed to climb their way close to the top destroyed themselves and effectively cursed their descendants to hell. Creating a Superpsyker Artificial Perpetual that believes Himself much older and born to protect Humanity through any means necessary, taking that option by force after the DAoT civilization fell apart, but is actually just another creation of Mankind gone rogue much like the Men of Iron. It'd be thematic to say the least. I mean you'd think otherwise the Aeldari would have known about Him far longer given the Emperor's Presence in the Warp was quite strong even before Molech, and that Necron Technology was apparently on Earth/Mars in the past, something they were keeping very close tabs on, and the Webway connected to both I believe. It's also difficult to tell what is and didn't likely to have happened, because everything is Canon, even conflicting lore, it's just that not everything is true.

@@AveSicarius according to something I read at some point during the Daot the emperor kind of laid low because the human powers of the time would have had no problem destroying him/taking him into custody The thing about daot creations is they were all technology based. They didn't really do genecrafting at the time and the modern imperium is actually far more advanced at genecraft than Daot, let alone soul forging, which was only achieved by the emperor after what he gained on molech, so creation of a being such as the emperor wasn't really within the sphere of the time In terms of detecting the emperor sometimes these things just boil down to canon conflict 😄 I mean before the age of strife the eldar were supposedly at the height of their power but also at this time so we're humanity, canon conflicts I like your workable theory but I do actually like the canon origin of the emperor and I ultimately don't see what retconning him to be a Daot creation would achieve

The thought that I've had is that maybe it wasn't the chaos gods that created that warp vortex, bur Erda? The chaos gods never took credit for that hit and who knows, mabe Efda was strong enough to create that vortex.

The problems with Erda are many, but the worst are her unexpected, brief, and massive impact on the lore, absurd power scale, and her largest contribution to the lore ends with quite possibly the most idiotic choice imaginable. Erda was wrong about the Emperor; there is no doubt whatsoever. She supposedly didn’t want the Primarchs to be raised by the Emperor, because he would make them into generals for his crusade. So, in the absence of the Emperor, they became… generals just as capable as they would be with the Emperor, but with various mental, physical, and personality problems from living in jacked up situations caused by Erda. Yes, Konrad Kurze benefited greatly from Nostromo and having no guidance. Angron turned out exceedingly well prior to the Emoeror even arriving. It’s just nonsensical. It’s sort of like fearing what my wife would teach my son and deciding to drop him off in the Gaza Strip instead.

I think you are missing the point. Erda tried to change the future, and ended up creating the future she was trying to prevent. Just like the Emperor, who essentially guaranteed humanity was doomed to a long slow painful death by trying to create his utopia. They are tragic self defeating characters. Unless you follow the logic of the Emperor did nothing wrong and it everything was everyone else fault, wich I feel betrays every theme of the setting.

@@brendancoulter5761Assuming that the Ruinous Powers were being truthful, there was two outcomes. Emperor kills Horus, humanity experiences a long, slow decline until extinction.
