One of the things I learned from another organizer that really helped me might help Sherry. Instead of asking yourself " is this useful?" Instead ask, " Can I do without this?" Can I live without this ? Helped me start tossing more. It helps us realize that it is more important to be able to find what we have than to have all we want or need. Living in the present is so important! We miss so much life, trying to organize and keep everything! Sherri will appreciate not having so many daily decisions. I'm slowly getting there. But I'm getting there!

Thanks for sharing. 😘 My husband of almost 42 years passed last November and I am determined to declutter. Initially it was overwhelming because my project included the contents from his mother (passed 2018), undone because of his failing health. Once I categorized all the ‘stuff’ and realized I wasn’t obligated to anyone else’s time frame, it became easier. One bin at a time.
@labradorite8256

Keep going, you'll find yourself pulling out a bin before you've even realised what you're doing! Hubby finds it overwhelming, and we've done both parents houses in recent years. He's stuck on his workshop, which is a shame because it's the last place of his to be done. He just sees it is one big pile, you are wise to categorise it. I'm stuck on heirloom crockery. That will definitely be the Swedish death cleaning method.

I bet this has a real 'knock on effect' for the rest of the house. When you finally get the space in a beautiful fresh looking room, it is hard to re-clutter it with old things. I would take inspiration from times spent on holiday with just the bare minimum and give it a week or so getting used to the new look before asking the questions, what do I really need or want in here, what do I really miss? Sometimes, less is more. Great result!

@@21cormorants I think it is the going through that bin, but putting things back in to keep for someday. Instead, they made decisions for everything they were keeping and took it to where it needed to go,(or decide on a home for it) not just back in the bin as a a future acton item. Because you'll forget what's in the bin, and have to go through it again. Until you actually do the action of putting it in its rightful home you are simply moving it around in baskets, bin, out to the garage etc... so it's still clutter.

Sherry - Just a little FYI: We're now about 90% finished decluttering and now do the one-in, one-out process (new shirt in? an old shirt goes) and think VERY carefully about buying anything. Anyway, just to let you know, we now have a total of only four bins: two hold Christmas stuff (yes, all xmas stuff has actually been reduced to 2 bins!) and two hold CD's that were moved onto the cloud. That's it! Those bins are the devil! ;-) Great to see that you got RID of a bin. (We ended up donating loads of bins.) Make those decisions...trash, donate, or a home...and continue to do your best not to make bins an option. Your bedroom is looking fabulous! So clean, fresh, and calming. I'm crossing my fingers that you don't bring too much stuff back into the room. Living with less stuff is such a good feeling. I'm cheering you on. Keep up the great work!

Hey Carla I know that was the start to a tough conversation. There’s no point in moving around stuff. Sherry said at the beginning an Airbnb inspired her to let stuff go. Maybe Sherry needs something on the wall to remind her of how being at the AB made her feel. Another thought I had, Sherry could list 3 hobbies and 3 home projects to do; only keep stuff that matches that list. Any other stuff let it go. And only do an emergency kit that fits in one bin. Lastly, try to live in the now. Keeping stuff for what may happen just keeps your life and home cluttered. Live for right now. As always ty for sharing your life. Hope you meet your goals. ❤

Fantastic job to everyone that has been involved. This is the reward your sister is getting for doing the work of decluttering. So many interesting parts of how effective it was to full remove and empty a space like the closets. She had all kinds of hidden things away she got rid of. I also realized your sister can’t do it all and will need multiple passes to build up her decluttering skills. I think a table station to empty bags or boxes would actually be helpful for her. Bins set in front of trash, donate, relocate. And a journal next to her to write down projects because it is true- we all shift them to side but then our environment becomes loaded with “things to do” all around us.

Congrats 🎉 Carla on receiving a sponsorship with lowes. 💙 that's really awesome. That's really good you were able to talk it thru with your sister about fully processing the bin so its not just shuffling things around and having to then go thru it again. Mini categories are key than just saying i will go thru it or deal with it later. That's good that you helped her see that and recatergorized each section in to different zones. Your sisters bedroom turned out really nice. Its amazing what a fresh coat of paint and new flooring will do to a space. I hope it inspires her to keep moving forward with her decluttering journey and find the peace she wants to feel in her space. Your right ur space does make a impact on how you feel. Also Jake is awesome for putting the furniture together . My mind usually shuts down to when it comes to building furniture with a lot of pieces and a not so well easily to follow along instruction manual. I feel sometimes they could be visually laid out better and be explained a little differently to make it easier to understand sometimes for us who have more of a challenge with building things. 😊 Great job ladies... so what room will be next?

So awesome Carla, I agree, every item needs a home in order to know where it is, where to put it back, and be able to use it and not continue to shuffle items or waste them. When I declutter a space and decide to sell items, I immediately take pictures of those items, they are kept together in a basket or clear tub that is easy to access. When I’m sitting watching tv, I list the items, because my pictures are already in my phone from when I was decluttering that space. I continue to lower the items if they don’t sell and give the item a certain time frame to sell, if it does not sell, it’s donated or given away. My motto isn’t to get what I paid for the item, it’s to make some money, give the item to someone who may actually use it and ultimately remove that clutter from the actual items I use. The more you help her, the better she will get at accomplishing this on her own. 🤞🏼 I love your channel!!! I love the floors, paint color, and closet doors

My fave part is the closet doors. Those will go along way to make the room feel calmer, and reducing the visual clutter. I think this was the perfect approach for your sister - taking everything out and then deciding what comes back in to her room, what really belongs in her bedroom, will make a huge difference! Looking forward to more, and the final result.

James is the MVP of all your sister series. Just in the background being the mover and shaker! Y'all do amazing as well. But wow!

A potential idea going forward is to carry that same flooring throughout the whole house, which would inspire faster decluttering. Plus you never know when the company will retire a flooring for new ones.

Great start to your sister's bedroom makeover. My favorite is all of the upgrades and how you challenge your sister to ensure everything she keeps has a space in her home that she can access when needed. You ladies have inspired me to tackle my spare room!!

WOW! What a difference fresh paint and wood floors and white trim/doors make. Changed the whole atmosphere of the room. I liked the turquoise theme before, and love the new calming colors which are a beautiful update. The wood floors from Lowes are gorgeous! Great job on another layer of decluttering and not box shuffling. 👏😊

Carla, you have the patience of a saint! I know from experience how hard it is to declutter with family, no matter how well-intentioned they are. 10 thumbs up!

I definitely identify with not shifting items from one bin, room to another. I've been working with that mantra in my head, making slow but steady progress. Watching your process is helpful.

My favourite part is the flooring and folding doors. Very nice 😁 I like a bold blue myself too, but the more neutral paint tone is very calming and works well.

Great idea to get the donation items gone right away. Too easy to pick through if they are still laying around. Been there done that. Sherry's progress in letting things go is wonderful to see. It seems to be easier and easier for her. The closet doors are a lovely addition. The paint color is lovely too. That may be the color I am looking for for my windowless bathroom. Thank you these videos. They are inspiring.

Carla It’s good you take the long view of finding all the final homes for things instead of just putting them all in another box!

Looking good! I find it fascinating to see the construction of those two beds, never seen anything like that in Europe! I also don‘t understand putting a rug under the bed but it seems common in the US? When I see the dust that accumulates under a bed just with normal usage on a hard floor… I guess those with carpet don‘t see that so much. Different folks, different strokes. You are all doing so well with the renovation and especially the decluttering. It must be hard for Sherri to develop a new mindset, old habits die hard, she‘s getting better at every pass 😃 You are such valuable support! 👍
