The sad thing was is that they were also partially a head of their times too. Both of them believed in centralized government instead of allowing individual house to have their own personal standing armies and Richard tried to modernize his country economically as well as culturally. He’d witnessed first hand as a child his regents used his authority to enrich themselves or to wage war on France which ultimately lead to the Peasants revolt and knew that the nobility (even his own uncles) could replace him at any time if it benefited them. Plus once he became king none of his nobles were willing to conceded any kind of power to him even the power that was rightfully his and even threatened to do to him what was done to his great-grandfather (who even Richard would have to acknowledge deserved it).

"The crown of England had passed down legitimately through eight generations, since Henry II established the Plantagenet dynasty 2 and half centuries earlier, Henry IV's coronation changed all that" to be honest I'm not sure if that is true. After Richard Lionheart/Richard I, the 2nd Plantagent king died without any legitimate children the crown went to his youngest brother who became King John I, but they had a brother named Prince Geoffrey who was younger than King Richard I and older than King John I. Now Geoffrey died before Richard I but he had a legitimate son named Arthur and if we are gonna talk about the crown passing legitimately within the Plantagent dynasty, then after Richard I died the next King should have been his nephew Arthur and Not his younger brother John. But John seized the crown, I believe with support from his mother and then captured and had his nephew Arthur killed. So the crown going to John I still went to a Plantagent family member but u cant deny it was a usurpation. The only difference between that happening and Henry Bolingbroke/Henry IV usurping the crown from Richard II was that Richard II was declared and crowned King, but as for Prince Arthur he never had the chance to be crowned because his Uncle, John I secured the throne right from the beginning.

HERE'S THE THING THAT DOESN'T "SIT RIGHT" WITH ME IN THIS DOCUMENTARY! ... They always criticize Richard - alright! - but the main "accusation" thrown at him (especially from modern Historians) is that he was "TYRANT" - at the same time, though - the main ...how to say?..."source" of those accusations come from that line of "lancastrian" Kings of England that were responsible for his deposition and death - Henry the 4th - Henry the 5th and then Henry the 6th. For me HE was the true "last" of Plantagenet Kings - not because there were no "other candidates", but because once you break the rule of succession (from father to first-born son) - then - IN THE LONG WAY - you ALWAYS PAY FOR IT - in this case - with the rivers of blood spilled during the "Wars Of The Roses". Personally - once I started researching his life and reign - I realized that the more I "dig", the more I kinda LIKED the guy! No matter what this documentary says (and it sure as hell has some good points!) - but Richard the IInd - was a (truly great!) King that had a very high sense of his own self-importance, very strong views upon the role of the Monarch in Society and - something they do not mention here - he also had excellent artistical interests and tastes (you can see them in that astonishingly beautiful "Wilton Diptych"). LIKE IT OR NOT! - but in those times, those "traits" were actually a POSITIVE thing. I've always thought he was a sort of "Louis the XIVth ante-litteram" (with a similar sense of "Grandeur" included! :D) and that didn't fly well with his subjects (...never forget though! - his main critics came from his ARISTOCRACY first among others!...) - so today he's remembered as a "tyrant", but at the same time this appellation - this "DESIGNATION" - can be used to call Henry the VIIIth (who spilled RIVERS of English blood, by the way, but is never criticized for that!) and PLENTY of other Kings. If we are to judge other English Kings by the same standards, then Edward the Ist (the famous "malleus scotorum") or even Henry the IInd (the first in the line of the Plantagenets) were WAY more "tyrannical" than Richard - however - they never get any bad wrap for exactly the same things Richard was doing! - and that is something I could never understand.
@MichaelDeFeo184 жыл бұрын
I hear what your saying but unfortunately we can only go with what we know. However in my opinion Richard II was seen as a such a tyrant bc of his actions. As u said it seems like other English Kings did things just as terrible or even moreso than Richard II but that's the difference. Richard II's tyranny was mostly addressed to his people and his barons, where the other english kings tyranny was mostly pointed towards outsiders and enemies of England. Richard II's actions were mostly pointed towards his subjects and the ones who gave him power, the barons. Plus he made a big mistake, or an idea too radical for the time by stripping Henry Bolingbroke's inheritance, and then making all the other nobles sign blank parchments. Stripping someone of their inheritance was an unheard of or very rare thing for that time without a legitimate reason and it made all the other barons fear for their inheritance bc the same thing could happen to them. Plus dont forget when Henry Bolingbroke had enough and went for the throne most of the nation flocked to him and when Richard II came back to England from his campaign in Ireland almost everyone abandoned him. As said a battle didnt even happen he lost everything in a clean sweep and that right there, proves to me he must have been a huge Tyrant for him to lose the crown to his cousin so swiftly and without any huge battle occurring. That's just how I look at it

I have had an interesting time reading well referenced articles that controvert this view of Richard ll as notably tyrannical, aswell as much of the anecdotal and other evidence here produced. It might be rash to presume to be overly moralistic or psychological about the power struggles of late 14th c magnates, though the imagination is certainly stirred by a gripping narrative simplification nicely staged and shot

After watching this again I wonder why they never mention what Richard II's other uncles, John of Gaunt (Founder of House Lancaster) and Edmund of Langley ( Founder of House York), were doing all during Richard II' reign? They said that their youngest brother Thomas Duke of Gloucester was responsible for giving Richard II the news about getting rid of his friends and was one of the 5 lords(also including Henry Bolinbroke who was John of Gaunts oldest son) that confronted Richard II but in the end decided to let him keep the crown, but where were they while all this was happening? Then when Henry Bolingbroke had enough of Richard II's tyranny after Richard II stripped his inheritance that he was supposed to receive after the death of his father, John of Gaunt, and invaded and took the crown, Richard II had actually left his uncle Edmund of Langley in charge of the realm, while he was campaigning in Ireland. So obviously Richard II must have trusted his uncle Edmund of Langley a great deal to leave him in charge so I'm surprised that this video said absolutely nothing about him?
