Check out The Six Queens of Henry VIII and see why Catherine Howard was beheaded, in a similar way to Anne Boleyn.

I hate this disgusting portrayal of an abused minor. Catherine Howard was groomed, molested and pawned off by the men around her throughout her entire life, and portraying her as some kind of pornographic seductress is horrible. Sexualising a seventeen year old who who murdered by her husband on claims we don’t know to be true is shameful.

When we look at history we need to take our own take on society out of the equation. She was young, no doubt. But in the 16th century, this was not uncommon. If you view history as we do today, you miss very important details about what history really is.
@dutchessgirl13

@@ButtonsCasey It was STILL not common for girls to be abused at the ages of 12-13. Margaret Beaufort did give birth to the future Henry VII at 12, but she was a very strange example, people generally considered it shocking even then, and Margaret never gave birth to another child again. There's a reason why Lord Capulet, in Romeo and Juliet, tells Paris to wait until Juliet is about 15 or 16 to marry her, because while it would still have been considered young by the standards of the time, she would at least more mature.
@ombrenightcores4153

I hate it when people say “it was a different time, people her age were mature enough,” because they weren’t. It just took over five hundred years for us to realize that girls weren’t sexually mature yet, even if they did get their period. Maybe the trauma that often came along with molestation helped keep them in submission…

sindel kahn Well, actually Starkey wrote several books on the Tudors. He has a CBE, has a PhD in history, went to Cambridge where his thesis was on Tudor history. He’s also a fellow in the Royal Historical Society. Tracy Boreman has a PhD in history and taught history at university. She’s a chief executive the Heritage Education Trust, and along with Lucy Worsley, are Chief Curators of Historic Royal Palaces. She’s also in “Who’s Who”. All of them have hosted several British Documentaries. I doubt very seriously any of them used internet articles to write their books. I don’t really need to “read more books”. I’ve read dozens of them throughout the years, and when ones come out by reputable writers/historians, I read them also. I do read articles put out by reputable historical magazines, such as BBC HISTORY magazine. And I do enjoy “The Anne Boleyn Files and Tudor Society ” hosted by a woman who has written several books on the Tudors, here on KZbin. But you do you.

I am so happy to see someone realize this other than myself. According to everyone back then, only one of Henry's wives was considered beautiful. That was Catherine of Aragon. And they always portray her wrong as well!!
@ladylove2310
@ladylove2310 3 жыл бұрын
What was considered beautiful back then differs from today. ‘Plump’ was the figure of an ideal woman, as it meant you could afford to eat well, and it was considered you were fertile if you were ‘plump.’ Also, I am not sure where you are getting your sources. The French ambassador at court wrote that she was very pretty, and considered one of the prettier of Henry’s wives, and quite vivacious. So, it isn’t history creating a narrative. She was considered beautiful in her time.

The greatest flaw in this video is the overdramatic flair. For instance, at 7:10, the historian begins to read Catherine's one surviving letter (to Culpeper). For dramatic effect, she doesn't reveal the writer until she reaches the end. She then says "it's signed off ... Catherine". Yes, we know. She says, "This is Catherine Howard's signature." YES - you just told us that. "Henry's wife." We KNOW who she is - that's why we're here! "The queen." WE GET IT ALREADY! The repetition of that (it was written by Catherine! Catherine HOWARD! The king's wife! The queen!) doesn't serve to teach us anything. It's not informative; it's actively wasting valuable time. Instead it's just for a splash of drama. It's unnecessary, and it's indicative of the larger problem here. This is primarily about drama, not facts, and when discussing a woman who was executed, likely before she was 20, for "crimes" committed beginning when she was in her very early teens, drama vs facts MATTER. Overdramatization loses a lot of important information.

I'm not a history pundit, but she probably did not deserve her fate. It may have been common for a family to use their daughter/female family member as a "stepping stone " to gain court favor, which could result in wealth and power bestowed on their family. I don't know if the Howard family did this, but they probably should have given the "teen queen" some guidance, let her know what she was getting into. In the Court of King Henry VIII , "what goes around , comes around"; some who threw Catherine "under the bus" would meet the same fate.
