You're brave to eat on the beach! Seagulls are little bastards. One of my favourite memories of my dad is us sitting at a beach eating fish n chips. A gull swept down and grabbed my fish before I'd eaten my first chip. My dad was crying with laughter, even though he'd paid for it. 10 seconds later, another flew past and shat in his food. So 5 minutes later we went back to the chippy and the guy guessed what happened before we said anything and came out with "we'd be out of business without those gulls, bless 'em".

Did you realise that Swansea and Mumbles is the gateway to The Gower, one of the most stunning areas in Wales . It is an incredibly beautiful peninsula, surrounded by iconic beaches and cliffs cared for by The National Trust. Rhosilli and Worm’s Head (named after a dragon ) are unbelievable. I wish someone local could have driven you to these truly wonderful places. I used to live in Swansea and went to university there. The Welsh are very hospitable people - never be afraid to ask for help.

So glad you visited Swansea! It's an underrated city set in an absolutely stunning land and seascape, and it's been improving very quickly. I rarely meet anybody outside of Wales who has been to Swansea and if they have they usually provide me with a very cynical and negative opinion about the place. Even most Welsh don't have much good to say about it and prefer Cardiff (which is bigger and has more stuff but is a little too flat and commercialised for me). Personally I love Swansea, and plan to move there eventually.

So, Swansea kind of *is* a “pretty shitty city” but not an absolute shithole. For one thing, the Mumbles is very pretty, it has nice parks, and if you travel a bit further along the coast you have the Gower Peninsula which is one of the most incredible areas of natural beauty in South Wales. Part of the reason it had a reputation for being “shitty” or ugly is as a result of the Second World War. The city was heavily bombed in 1941 because of its nearby oil refinery and strategic port link. Around 1,200 high explosive bombs, and 56,000 incendiaries were dropped during the Swansea Blitz over a three night period. As a result, a lot of buildings were thrown up quicky (and cheaply) post-war, and weren’t exactly pretty to look at. Over the last two decades that’s slowly started to change with many of those buildings being demolished, and a lot of regeneration going on, especially around the marina (SA1) which now plays host to many bars and restaurants, as well as a new arena for concerts and shows.

Ha! Welcome to Swansea and Mumbles. A couple of interesting points for you. You mentioned The Beatles... there is a link between them and Swansea. The first band on their Apple label were a band from Swansea, namely Badfinger. They are quite good in a 60s/70s way, their singer/songwriter was a friend of the Beatles and they gave him a fantastic guitar that is now, you guessed it, In America. Peter also played on George Harrison's first album, at least The No Sign bar you went in is about the same age as Europeans taking over America... a pub down the road, same side is considerably older! Swansea looks a bit better now than when Twin Town was filmed... we had just got over a Conservative Government that damaged Wales badly. Now we have our own Parliament and see more funding for growth, some will argue, but you can actually see the difference. M

That was excellent, Swansea is my home town and the film Twin town was a pretty accurate description of the reality of some people who live here, the quote from the film 'pretty shitty city' is actually from the Swansea poet Dylan Thomas who was a regular at the No-Sign bar in Wind street, now the main area for nightclubs at the weekend. Mumbles is the 'posh' end of Swansea where the wealthier people live. Joe's ice cream is most definitely NOT Mr Whippy which is some kind of synthetic concoction that you buy from a Mr Whippy van (wonderful though it is) Joe's is an Italian Swansea family institution with only two shops and a secret recipe just a few family members are allowed to know. You chose a fairly good hotel, the Dragon hotel used to be the biggest and smartest hotel in the city and yeah, welsh cakes, fish and chips and strong beer are all food of the Gods but we also have masses of Indian, Thai, Chinese and Japanes restaurants and cafes, glad you enjoyed your stay x

Thai, Chinese, Indian, etc Asian food is better in the UK than in the US possibly because of Empire.
