It’s honestly really funny he’s so delusional he acts like her face actually changed after getting with her, as if she was somehow becoming more beautiful before his very eyes. Also GRRM makes their first sex scene read even more r*pey than it already is (the circumstances are already really bad) by making his internal dialogue battling with his honor and grappling with himself and trying to absolve himself of responsibility by saying he has to do it for the Watch. Then GRRM tries to show that Jon no longer cares about his honor by writing “it happened two more times that night and once more in the morning” which totally falls flat and sounds ominous like she forced herself on him while he was sleeping or something. Really hard to read even if that wasn’t his intention.

I still thought she was amazingly beautiful and had a massive crush on her from the moment I met her on the first day of 7th grade when we had a class together, but she was also a little short for her age and her large eyes and narrow nose seemed unfit for her soft, round face and high, full cheekbones. Fast forward to 10th grade, where she just blossomed over the summer. Her body filled out, her face slimmed down, and suddenly she looked like a Victoria's Secret model. She had a massive growth spurt over the summer, and when she came back to school all the boys wanted her. Imagine my surprise and delight when she asked me out! That was over 31 years ago. @@SunDogGod Do remember that different people are different. Even in a small town it's easy to get an abundance of choice by using modern technology, but not everyone is going to care for that. I've had the opportunity to meet a great many beautiful women in my life, partially to being an extrovert with zero sense of shame and partially to getting to travel overseas due to my time in the Navy. However, I'm not one of those people who really puts much value in physical appearances, and while I certainly enjoy and appreciate my wife's incredible beauty, I'm don't find myself attracted to women just on the basis of their looks. As such, I never felt the need to "shop around" given that my wife has an amazing personality. Not everyone is like that, and in this day and age if someone wants to "play the field" it is easy to do so even when living in a relatively small town. I don't think it's especially healthy to be very promiscuous, though, as it can lead one to be cynical and to not value deep personal relationships.

This is where they got the casting pretty decent, actually. I mean yes, Rose Leslie is very beautiful, but not conventionally beautiful. She's beautiful in an unusual way.

The only thing he finds attractive about her is the thing that makes him think of Sansa (the “sister” who never had a sisterly bond) and Catelyn (the mother figure who could never accept him).

She held the reigns in their relationship. She was raised with more freedom to be confident and assured. Jon was always second-guessing and worried about the many rules and vows he had to abide by. She took his virginity. 😗

This is why Shinobi were hardcore in reality. They had to do stuff like this and then abandon them to be tortured along with any children they had. And they would go in knowing that would happen just so they could get intel on the enemy side for their lord

It's kind of a shame that there weren't the odd few more not quite so 'stereotypically beautiful' actresses in the show. I think it's rough that TV shows inadvertently warp people's standards of what to look for in a partner - but I guess I'm tripping into a whole 'nother tangent of eels here. Beauty's in a smile, it's in personality - and it's great when you see it and feel it :)

"At a lord's court the girl would never have been considered anything but common, he knew. She had a round peasant face, a pug nose, and slightly crooked teeth and her eyes were too far apart. Jon had noticed all that the first time he'd seen her, when his dirk had been at her throat. Lately, though, he was noticing some other things. When she grinned, the crooked teeth didn't seem to matter. And maybe her eyes were too far apart, but they were a pretty blue-grey color, and lively as any eyes he knew. Sometimes she sang in a low husky voice that stirred him. And sometimes by the cookfire when she sat hugging her knees with the flames waking echoes in her red hair, and looked at him, just smiling . . . well, that stirred some things as well. "

He down plays this, but Ygritte was 19 and Jon was 15. She coerced Jon to sleep with her. It was essentially rape. Jon's journey in Clash and Storm mirrors Dany's journey in GoT. Having their innocence stolen from them way too young. Put in a foreign culture they don't understand with practices and customs they don't agree with morally. Both Jon and Dany kill (indirectly) their abusers and both remember them fondly. But it's just teenagers failing to properly cope with their first real relationships being built off of coercion and having no power. Jon couldn't have said no to Ygritte, he would've been killed if he didn't. Dany couldn't say no, Drogo was much bigger and held all the power. Both Jon and Dany have trouble with relationships later on. Jon sends away his closest friend, turns down Val's advances, and the only person Jon has any romantic tension with is Satin. Jon never calls any women pretty, but he does with Satin. This isn't something out of left field either. Remember that Dany also experiments with her sexuality. Her first time ever enjoying it was with a girl, the only time in between Drogo's death and Mereen is with other women. That all being said, I do love Satin as a character a bit too much. He only has like 3 lines total, but he is Jon's steward for all of book 5. It makes me worried for Satin's fate in Winds. The wall is a powder keg and everything can go fucking insane with Jon's death. Jon was literally the only person stopping his Brothers from committing war crimes against the free folk.
@timmodrow437 Жыл бұрын
Jon was sixteen when he joined the freefolk. He also had to do it in order to keep his cover and survive amongst them. I wouldn’t call that rape.
@randomguyontheinternet8345 Жыл бұрын
In the medieval era. 13 was considered an adult. In this time period this wasnt considered grooming. In this era people were married by 13 had children at 15 and were dead by 30-40. Its a very different time period. The books are based on this era.
@justdirt Жыл бұрын
@timmodrow437 "he had to do it" Meaning he didn't and couldn't give consent. That is rape. It was still a grown adult abusing their position to force a young teen to sleep with them.
@justdirt Жыл бұрын
@randomguyontheinternet8345 No, this is a very common misconception. 16 was generally considered adulthood in Europe throughout history. Almost no one, especially non nobles, would get married younger than that. Yes, people who were much older sometimes married young teens, but in exceedingly rare instances were they expected to consumate said marriage until the child was of age. Even with this cultural difference of time, 15/16 year olds were still children. A major part of the story is showing how harsh it was on kids having to grow up much faster than they should have to. Jon losing his virginity to Essentially a stranger who forced herself onto him through the threat of death, that's tragic. Jon could've been 19, and it still would've been rape. The fact that Jon was at minimum 3 to 4 years younger and still a teen only enforces that it was rape. In fact, even if Jon consented verbally, it wouldn't have mattered. Because at that point, it would be grooming and coercion.

It's funny that a 15 years old is apparently old enough to spend his life among cutthroats, fighting against savages and ice demons but a 4 years older girl convincing him to sleep with her is rape.
