Finger detangling has proven to be both ineffective and inefficient for my hair. Post hooded dryer with deep conditioner still in my hair I use an appropriate detangling brush and this sets up my hair for success! I have achieved great length retention and thickness this way. Hair care regimens must be individualized !

This!!! I have read and watched things that say finger detangling is best for 4c hair but after spending hours detangling my hair is never really detangled. Also wide tooth combs pull my hair out. I'm looking into the tangle teezer right now.

I just cut my relaxed hair off on August 14th. I started transitioning back in the beginning of February. It has truly been a STRUGGLE!!! I was doing so good at first, but then started getting product build up a lot, but I think I have FINALLY kind of figured what to do with my hair. I used to neglect moisturizing daily, but have learned that I absolutely need it for my hair! I wish there were more TWA natural KZbin videos, but watching your videos have helped a lot.

I used to think keeping my hair SATURATED with liquid would make it moisturized and healthy. I wet my hair everyday for a month, and used oils and butters on top. Absolutely no protein anywhere, because I mistakenly believed I was protein-sensitive (I just didn't know my hair or what I was doing, lol). I washed my hair one day and noticed it felt... like a sponge. I researched and found out about hygral fatigue. Once my hair dried it felt "normal." OK. No biggie. I (obviously) stopped soaking my hair everyday. I purchased a protein treatment and used it the next wash day (1 week later). I shampooed and then went to applying the protein treatment. Only.. as soon as I started sectioning my hair and smoothing it, I noticed SO. MUCH. HAIR sliding out of each section. Needless to say, all that saturation damaged my hair. The protein treatment helped stop the breakage, but my hair is definitely thinner in some places. Although my hair loses moisture easily, I now practice moderation, and do a lot more research on caring for my hair. Live and learn. :)

whats your hair porosity and curl pattern? and when you say saturate, like was it drenched with water or spritz everyday. i have low porosity, and sometimes its hard to get it moisturized or hydrated. and in the winter i get lazy, and wash it every two weeks, but ill remoisturized once within the two weeks. I saw a video of some girl on how she keeps her braid out, she spritz it everyday with water only spray bottle, and re twist (no detangling), next morning untwist it and defintion was there. and she would moisturize with a leave in and oil after 3 days. So i tried that method, im on day 2 , and my braid out is bomb. Since reading your story im scared im going to get hygral fatigue in the future😔 although mielle hair milk has hydrolyzed wheat protein in it lol. im just curious to learn from your experience.
@MysteereousMyssie
@MysteereousMyssie 6 жыл бұрын
@@xtelfolaj I believe I have high porosity hair, and a mix of 4C/4B, with some random 4A strands throughout. By saturated, I was completely drenching my hair. My hair readily accepts moisture, but it dries out FAST! I now moisten my hair every morning and evening with carrier oils - instead of liquids - in between washes. I'm not styling my hair, just keeping it braided all fall/winter, so it's hard to advise there. Since I'm not low-po, I won't list my routine. But, I think what has helped me the most (after the fiasco) is feeling my hair before I moisturize, rather than adhering to a strict schedule. Lightly pulling on it to see what it needs (does it bounce back? Is it stiff? Is it breaking easily?) and responding accordingly. If you aren't drenching your hair every 1 - 2 days (and it doesn't sound like you would be), I think you should be OK. If you're really worried, you may want to incorporate some products with light proteins (proteins listed near the bottom of the ingredient list). It's all about finding the moisture and protein balance your hair needs. Hope some of this helps and good luck!
@xtelfolaj
@xtelfolaj 6 жыл бұрын
@@MysteereousMyssie ahh I see. I don't completely drench it with water but I spritz. Like one light spritz each section (I have 12 braids) I would probably moisturize with a leave in and oil in the middle and/or end of the week. Because my hair already feels like it has products in it. Since I have lowpo I know getting moisture in my hair is a bit hard. I baggy overnight twice a month with ghee (don't judge😂) and one of the times I baggy overnight with ghee I do a protein treatment before hand. My leave in has aloe vera gel and hydrolyzed wheat protein, which is the only thing in my product cabinet that has protein. Thank you for responding, I got freaked out that daily spritz will lead to hygral fatigue.

I see you NappyFu! Your hair is thriving woman!!! Looks so healthy!!! You are my hair twin. I don't find my wash day stressful. That came from researching for a year during my transition. I watched videos from true 4c women like you and Green Beauty so I got realistic expectations of what I was signing up for. It this point I'm excited about my natural hair. My response whenever someone says that that our type of hair is difficult to manage is that most of us were never taught how to care for our hair in its natural state unprocessed state. We got used to taking care of processed straight hair. So it's takes a few more steps and loads of patience. The time that is required for our hair is non negotiable and I can't change that. Plus it really helps that I like feeling the texture of my hair 😀

Seeing women like you taking such careful, loving care of your hair and here I am, washing, (attempting to) deep conditioning (every week) and styling and moving on with my life. I wish I could do more. But it's still growing. I also don't use oils in my hair. I used to, my hair hated it. I attempted again, and my hair really, really hates it. My hair doesn't grow and it's weird. I wonder if there's more natural haired women like me.

I thought I had to hydrate and moisturize my hair every day, when I first went natural last year. Then I discovered how castor oil, as a sealant, is the key to keeping my hair moisturized for three to four days.

My expectations was that I could do ALL those many steps you've been showing us Nap..( prepoos, clay washes, onion juice, tea rinses, henna glosses etc). I finally realized I'm a low maintenance kinda girl so I find ways to streamline and customize my washday routine to fit my true and honest self. I have thin/fine low porosity 4b/c hair. I prepoo overnight with an olive oil avocado oil mix, next day I do an onion juice rinse before I wash, then I deep condition under my steamer or heat cap, detangle and moisturize using the LOC method. Finally I "style" with a twist and roller set. My hair stays pretty moist for 3-4 days then usually I'll refresh with a cowash and LOC until next wash day....Now you got me thinking maybe I should squeeze in a tea/ rice water rinse after my deep condition? Uuuuugh🤪

An unrealistic expectation I had for my hair WRT to moisturizing is coconut oil as a holy grail moisturizer. One size does not always fit all. It's a no-go for me as a moisturizer (especially on dry hair, I don't know how some can because I canna!). It's a sealant, and it's not the right one for me, either. Coconut oil gives my hair a shiny look but a rough feel. I have since found better oils to seal with (any combination of almond, grapeseed, jamaican black castor and/or olive oils), coconut oil has become my pre-poo detangler instead. I also had to learn the hard way that the L starts with LIQUID and not leave-in, and for me that's water (BTW I might try aloe vera juice, which so far I have only used as a DIY deep conditioner ingredient). Without water as my "L", it will not matter what oils, butters or creams I use, my hair will remain PARCHED!

Way better advice than most youtubers. Most the notifications that are pushed at me are unusable 3a-c people. Nothing against them. It's just that the youtube algorithm makes it harder to find people like this with hair closer to my texture. Also the "graded" hair texture thing makes it hard too because some people identify as 4 a-c and they're not quite there. I'm going to start in corporatin rice water and tea after my next trim. I shed way too much.

I have been natural for 10 years and finally now in these past two years have I actually found what works for me. I thought that the loc method was law. I did it all those years only to find that it was my greatest setback for retaining moisture. My hair does not like oil very much at all. I can only use creams. I only use oil to give my hair some slip on occasion. When I put oil on my hair...my hair has an even harder time absorbing moisture. During my time using the loc method my hair had even more shrinkage, no curl definition whatsoever, and broke off all the time. Now I can actually wear a wash-n go.

I understand everything you say. You are right. Us women can get into bad habits and wonder why out hair is dry. It’s true. Deep condition weekly and then separate hair into sections and apply your products into the hair until it looks and feel moisturised. All this before you twist or plait your hair. Your hair will not suddenly look and feel moisturised once it dries. Every strand should look hydrated before you style it otherwise the next day it will look as though you didn’t do anything to it. I have learnt the hard way. Wasn’t putting enough of the product on my hair from root to tip then wondered why my freshly washed hair felt and looked dry and frizzy the next morning.

I thought I would co wash. And after more research, never got into it. I shampoo (sulfate free) and deep condition weekly. But I do think it's beneficial to use a sulfate shampoo once a month, or after styles I've done with blow drying or flat ironing. And I apply my leave in conditioner in the shower. Every time. Unless I'm blow drying. I like to stretch my roots while I air dry and blow dry it the next day so I'm hopefully using less heat. Still working on the technique. I don't use my leave in conditioner for blow drying. Just the Gabrielle Union Flawless blow dry cream. I love that stuff!!

When I first went natural I did my hair justice but then I got very involve in youtubers videos on natural hair and was doing too much and I got too involve with my growth and was getting disappointed in my growth rate but I accepted the fact my hair grows very slow but biotin pills helps with that. Im type 4 and have a little 3c and low porosity and its dry so I still to this day have trouble keeping my hair moisturized without over moisturizing. I use to do co wash but I learned on my own that my hair do better when I shampoo a lot more because I have itchy scalp which gets on my nerves if I don't wash it correctly. My wash day routine is pre poo when I'm not lazy, shampoo with a moisturizing one, deep condition, and I use the LCO method when styling because my hair loves that more than the other one but most of the time in the summer I do the LOC method and my favorite go to style is two strands twist. I will be two years natural January 8, 2019 and I'm still learning my hair but I must be doing something right because its a little bit past my armpits.😏

Have you tried getting one of those large aloe leaves, opening it up and using that as a good conditioner? The Aloe plant has lots of moisture and vitamins. You could forego at least 3 steps. It is a good detangler as well.

my biggest issues were consistency, but i realized very recently after having gone through a bout of not touching my hair for a month and a half in the midst of depression that all this time i thought i knew what dry vs moisturized was, my was still moisturized after a month and a half only the ends were dry. yeah, wore a scarf but i hadn't done anything beyond that. when i pulled myself out of that slump, i noticed that all this time i thought i wasn't doing enough for my hair, and here i was doing enough all along. i had added acv water and oil (salad dressing) mix to my hair AGES ago and my hair loved it so i kept it, and i noticed that my hair was soft when using it, my ends were never dry, but then as i went on and did more and more research and people talking about moisture i thought my hair didn't feel moisturized out of the fact that i had never been or shown what moisturized hair should feel like beyond dirty hair when you're taking down your braids. so i assumed my hair wasn't moisturized and started looking for ways to fix it... i added things that i didn't realize i didn't need until now because i thought. long story short, i realized i was doing what i needed to do all along. my hair was moisturized, now, with consistency, it will remain that way. since the things i added to my regimen served to increase the moisture retention in my hair to the point that i still had moisture in my twists after a month and a half, i'mma keep it. i wash with a african black soap diy shampoo with aloe and essential oils then deep condition with a mix of cantu and shea moisture, honey jojoba oil and vitamin e, i did a separate rice and tea rinse ~ might mix them both this time around to cut down on the amount of times i have to get in and out of the shower then i twisted with a african pride leave in mixed with chebe powder with shea butter mixed with chebe. spraying each section with my hair "salad dressing" mix as i go. every night i spray with water and vinegar working it through to get the hair damp (not dripping) before wrapping it up and going to bed. if i don't go anywhere i keep it in my scarfs

I'm South African and this has been my wash day routine for the longest time. I figured out that what KZbinrs were saying wasn't working for my hair but I just thought it was because black Americans have hair texture different from mine as a African. It's interesting that for most of us the hair I'd the same, the popular information just came from the wrong people. Thank you for this video. You're really funny.

I feel like I had so many unrealistic expectations, starting with what type of hair I would have. Oy. But the big 2 were 1) thinking that a "wash and go" could be a thing for me. Just no fam. It takes my hair a solid 48 hours to completely dry without heat so it was never gonna work. And 2) that any product or regimen could replace regular trims. I started doing them every 6-8 weeks about 2 years ago and my hair is longer and healthier with less shedding. Game changer.

I'm so glad I found your channel. I just did a big chop over the summer, not by choice. My hair is very tight coils. Oh my dear Nappyfu. I love your videos. You are my kind of crazy. When I first big chopped I thought I could have a relaxed hair routine which means I was'nt doing much to my hair. I thought all the pre-poo and the deep conditioning was just extra. And honestly, my hair was doing just fine. But at year 2 I noticed excessive shedding and so I changed my routine according to what I felt my hair needed at the time and my hair started flourishing again. So I think it's good to not always follow trends but too pay attention to your hair and have a routine that is specific to its needs.

1. That coconut oil was a good sealant😧 brittle, dry, broken hair. Made a comeback as a great scalp oil tho. 2. That I could go without scalp oil while working under industrial a/c units.🏜 3. That I had to moisturize mid week cuz my hair "didn't look shiny". I have low porosity so it just weighed my hair down.

As always, you are very informative! Can't wait for your video on your struggles, it's nice to feel less alone with our own issues. I've been natural for 6years and I've made so many mistakes, it's insane 😳 but there is one mistake that is very unforgiving when it comes to my hair: having an unhealthy lifestyle (stress, junk food, no physical activity, anemia...). It affects hair growth, hair shedding, hair strength so brutally that no healthy hair regimen can fix it.

I've found that the less products I put on my hair, the better it feels and the less it breaks, along with better detangle methods lol. Before I was putting so many products on my hair, it literally felt like it was suffocating, I'm interested in trying the rice water and cowash that's sounds like something that will also help! I recently started drinking green tea and I've been doing green tea rinses for a couple of weeks now for my hair after I rinse out my deep conditioner. My hair and scalp loves it! I mix a little oil and some leave in conditioner in my green tea as well. I also use this to moisturize on a daily basis.

Drying time. I had to come to grips that my hair just wouldn't dry in 30min or 1hr under the dryer. Once I discovered that my hair is low porosity, I began researching all things low porosity. Which I learned is why my hair may take 2 days to air dry. I learned the importance of moisturizing my hair to the max on wash day cause once it dries that's it. I also learned that having kinky type 4 high density hair my detangling process must match that. I was following detangling steps from 3a-3c youtubers and was basically ripping my hair out. After watching type 4 youtubers and sectioning my hair etc my "shedding" was next to none. These are the two major things I have learned in the past 4years

Hello, Ms Nappyfu. I have been natural for 18 mos. This is the 2nd big chop. The first time there Wasn't a product that I didn't invest in. I didn't know about porosity, sealing, hair typing or anything I knew NOTHING! but that was 2011 and not as many you tubers to help. But through trial and plenty of errors. I am learning. I am still not sure what my hair type is, maybe 3cish. However I love watching all hair types. I learned so much from all of you wonderful black Queens 😆. So my regime is wash, (shampoo) rice water rinse, deep condition, (bonnet dryer) for 1 hr. then loc method. Once a week like clock work (I love it) it is my time to self pamper. So you are correct, if you are lazy your hair will punish you ect. Sorry this is so long, but like you said ..... each one teach one ( paraphrasing )😆😆😆
