I am an engine machinist w' 40 years experience, and 20 years watching vid clips of odd projects like this. This has the best editing, has the best sound and visual quality, no stupid music and OMG, a direct and to the point effing script! I wept. I wailed in astonishment. 5 stars!

True. Videos that take longer than the actual repairs are absurd. My favorite part is that they didn't spend 4 minutes telling us what they are about to do, why they are about to do it, and why they feel like they will be able to, then giving an overview of all of that one more time before actually getting to the point.

Funny and cute... but this doesn't engage in a true troubleshooting and nuts-and-bolts _why this part fails_ insight. However, _this_ linked video, with less production value and poor lighting, is far superior: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p2qXY6uklJeJjrs

This is for the ladies out there: I am a 54 year old single woman and I did this simple repair alone (thanks to the video!). It is not hard to do. I ordered my part from Amazon for about $13. My washer works like a charm now. Thank you so much for this helpful video!

I’ve been repairing appliances for a living since 1984. We need more women in this field. Believe me, if your mechanically inclined, you can make a nice living as an appliance technician. There a lot of woman that are more mechanically inclined than some of the men in this business.

I NEVER would have been able to do this on my own without this video! Most written guides recommended hiring a technician. Still, I decided to buy the parts and do it myself... I'm happy to say that thanks to this simple, to the point video, I not only completed the job, but without any problems! It made it EASY! Now my old washer has a new lease on life! So if your washer isn't spinning, Do a little on-line research before calling a technician. You might be able to save money by fixing it yourself!

Bless you and your video! Before I had found this video I had studied Whirlpool online repair course. They overcomplicated it terribly, removing the control panel and cabinet. After seeing this I dove in. I bought the clutch for $40.00. 1/2 hour later my wife loves me again! I did have trouble getting tranny flush as the basket bushing had moved and I had to bang it back in place. Thank you so much (You can do it too!)

While it's disassembled it's a good idea to replace the motor coupler. Some kits include this part. It's also a part that fails. Mine lasted 30 years, didn't realize it was broken until I decided to replace the clutch. Found broken plastic tabs under the washer along with black rubber dust. This came from the coupler. Great video, Very helpful.

Except for my agitator falling apart into 15 pieces & requiring more YT vids, this really helped. Getting the clutch re-installed takes some spinning of the clutch assembly and nudging, but ... it worked. I hope. Experimental load running now - it this clutch doesn't fix this machine, I'm taking it out back and shooting it : ) Many thanks :)

Thank you for making this look easy enough to attempt! The only thing I struggled a bit with was the retainer ring until I realized the easiest way to put it on was to work around the shaft from the pin to the other end, pushing the ring down. Piece of cake. Probably took an hour, pausing the video and making sure I had it right. Could probably do it in 20-30 min now. Nice job with the video!

For clarity: The symptoms on my washer were EVERYTHING worked great except over time the spin got slower and slower, then stopped completely. No weird noises, it washed, filled, drained, all OK. But would not spin. The motor was running normal, but the tub would not spin. The old clutch did not look THAT bad, but as soon as I tested the new one it spins like crazy new. Repair is NOT that hard, clutch can be found local for $40-$50, or order from these guys. Good people!

Just changed out the clutch using parts ordered from you and with your video as a guide. The only trouble I had was that after removing the agitator, there was an extra spring collar and plastic piece on the agitator shaft that had to be removed before the shaft would slide out. They were not mentioned in the video. The only other trouble I had was getting the new clutch retainer ring (under the support ring) to remain in place. In fact I didn't think it would stay in place after reassembly, but the fast spin works ok now so I guess it did. Thanks.

Great video. The clutch was easy to replace. The old clutch showed signs of burning; scorched pads and bits of black residue in the clutch assembly. After replacing the clutch machine would still not spin and the clutch was hot enough to make water sizzle after running for less than a minute! The drum was difficult to rotate; I had to use two hands to turn it. I pulled off the shroud to expose the inner tub and found a sock rolled up between the inner and outer tubs! I fished it out with coat hanger and reassembled everything and the machine now spins and works great.

I first noticed my heavier loads (towels) were not spinning dry. Eventually, all my loads were not spinning dry. All other wash functions worked fine. This was the fix. Couldn't see anything visually wrong with the old clutch, but now the washer works the same as when I bought it 7 years ago. It's an easy enough project. If you can change brake pads, you can do this.

My Whirlpool washer wouldn't move in the spin cycle. The clothes were coming out of the washer a lot wetter than they should have been. Initially we thought the dryer wasn't drying properly. My wife realized that it was the washer not spinning to extract the water from the clothes , the only way it moved was if I took my hand and started to spin it manually, then the spin cycle would kinda engage. I went to my local appliance shop and he confirmed the clutch was shot. I bought a new one for $55 and followed this excellent video and its in perfect working order!

Just the right amount of information for a DIYer. Doesn't assume you have 20 years in the business, yet not bloated by useless fluff. Thank you! My model has a metal clip and plastic drive cam under the agitator that prevented me from removing the motor until I found them. The hardest part was replacing the bent-wire retainer ring; you make it look so easy in the video, but it kept slipping off my screwdriver. Any hints?

Very helpful. One suggestion - @ 2:40 or so, once the white plastic cam is installed, be sure it's rotated counter-clockwise to move it back into its housing - otherwise, the motor/transmission assembly may not properly engage the mounting points.

Purchased my home in 2013. There was a Whirlpool washer that the realtor was going to haul away. I said, no! I had to leave my other washer at the condo I sold. So, this washer must have been a 2008 model, or about that age. Now it is 2024. This washer runs like a champ and fills to the brim with water. I started noticing that heavy loads were coming out soaking wet when load was finished. Clothes would be somewhat spun dry if the load was light. Then even the light loads were soaking wet. Purchased a clutch kit on Amazon. Cheap. The repair worked like a charm until I tried to put the motor back in. Could not get the bolts to come together. There was about a 1/4” gap. Thanks for the comment!! Once I turned the plastic clutch part counter clockwise, it aligned and I was able to complete the repair. I’m a 59 year old woman! I love this washer. I did repair the dogs once on the agitator. So happy I found this video! A new washer won’t last 5 years. They make all appliances to break down so you either have to purchase a new one, or pay costly repairs. KZbin saved the day. So rewarding to fix things yourself!!!

Piece of cake. Thanks for the instructions. My kenmore 90 series didn't have the bolt in the agitator, but used a 1/2" drive square hole that I turned with a socket extension. Also, if you pop off the motor from the gearcase, it makes it easier (lighter) to remove and install, and you can go ahead and replace the coupler ($8) which will inevitably need to be replaced at some point anyway.

Is there a way to diagnose which of the two - the coupler or the clutch is the issue ?

Bought a new clutch, everything seemed to go smoothly, looked exactly like the video. I put the machine together and everything worked for a couple days then no spin again. I dismantled to find a lot of black material around the clutch and the clutch ring has worn right down to the rivets in the white plastic blocks, the black must have been the friction material. Any idea what could cause a clutch to wear like that in just a few loads?

Thank you for this excellent video. With it, I was able to replace the clutch on my Kenmore washer fairly easily.

If the transmission is leaking a little oil it will not affect the performance of the machine unless it is getting on the clutch or brake. If it is leaking a lot you may need to consider also replacing the transmission.

Hi, I have just purchased a second hand unit and the seller did advise that the spins is slow at times. This I have encountered and the washing is wet when spin is complete. All things seem to point to the clutch especially since the previous owner admits that he washed horse quilts!! In any event I have ordered a spare clutch which will be replaced but I am basically asking if my diagnosis is accurate. ie the clutch is shot and slipping. Washing etc is all working fine.

Awesome video. I think I've narrowed my problem to a bad clutch. If I wash just a few items, and have the spin speed set to slow, it will usually spin slowly. But any more load than tiny (or at high speed) and it will not spin (I'm guessing too much weight). There are no strange sounds. Does this sound like a clutch to you? And if so, while I have it apart, should I replace anything else, such as the Motor Coupling or Clutch Band kit?

While I would enjoy a full break down transmission excluded this is a good informative video. Although the only reason I am watching is the rear spring came loose, and I was uncertain where it attached. I saw the spring in the video and, the size of the hole it fits in, it would have taken a long time to figure out it went there.

This is probably not your problem. We recommend using the repair help section of our website to diagnose problems ( there's a link towards the bottom of the description). If you enter your model number there you'll have access to part, model and symptom specific repair help.

The motor on my whirlpool washer overheats and trips the thermal protection shutting it off. In about 30 minutes it can resume washing for a little while then trips again. While it is running there aren't any odd noises or anything, but there is a burned rubber/electric smell. I took the pump off and noted some slight resistance turning the motor. I then removed the motor and the resistance to turning it seemed to go away. Could the clutch be the culprit of my motor overheating?

What would cause the drum shaft to not pull all the way out? I've even tried prying on the old clutch with a large prybar with no luck.
