Washington Heights
Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area was traversed by American Indians from the Early Woodland Period, who left remains of shellfish and pottery at the site of the present-day Little Red Lighthouse.   Washington Heights is part of the section of northern Manhattan that was settled by the Wecquaesgeeks (originally a name for the area meaning "birch-bark country"),  a band of the Wappinger and a Lenape Native American people. The winding path of Broadway north of 168th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue to its south is evidence of the old Wecquaesgeek trail, which traveled along the Hudson Valley from Lower Manhattan through Albany. On the plateau west of Broadway between 175th and 181st streets, the residents had been cultivating crops in a field known to Dutch colonists as the "Great Maize Field.
Washington Heights is a neighborhood in the northern part of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. It is named for Fort Washington, a fortification constructed at the highest natural point on Manhattan by Continental Army troops to defend the area from the British forces during the American Revolutionary War. Washington Heights is bordered by Inwood to the north along Dyckman Street, Harlem to the south along 155th Street, Harlem River and Coogan's Bluff to the east, and the Hudson River to the west.

This year-round outdoor market maintained as an “incubator” for small businesses by the neighborhood’s development corporation, hosts everything from mini-clothing shops to booths where shoppers can pick up toys and musical instruments, as well as stands offering ready-to-eat food. Every Thursday from June through November, the spot also serves as a green market where shoppers can pick up fresh produce.
