We’re hard to hit in a meaningful way because hurricanes have to curve into us via the bay to really be a huge problem. It’s only happened once in recorded history. Also, some of us do plan. My house is 60ft above sea level. It’d have to be quite the storm to flood me. The winds are worse for my structure. Other than a week without power because of a tree, we survived Irma just fine.

I have family in florida they are in the zone e flooding area. very safe. my family has hurricane windows, they stock up on food, batteries, numerous led lanterns, storm radios, fill tubs with water for sponge bathes and flushing toilets, they load up on non perishables, Vehicles secured in over 50 ft above sea level, they stay inside, over windows, have baby wipes, first aide kits, bags packed incase of emergency evacuation, wind up or battery clocks, lots of hand sanitizers, paper products, gas in cars, propane tanks for grills, plenty of food and water for all their pets, they have set forth a notification system, they have meds filled a few dayss hit so they have more than enough to last them. They stay inside till authorities say its safe to go outside. They never do stupid things to jeopardize their safety and safety of others, all pool furniture is in the pool or inside, all outdoor planters, furniture statues are brought inside so they don't blow away and cause damage. They are extremely prepared and then some. Im from NY and we get snow. So we prepare for snow ice etc. they prepare for rain hurricanes tornados. flooding. etc.

If you live in Tampa Bay you probably know exactly why nothing's being done about it. The local governments in this area take years to accomplish anything; "progress" is practically a four-letter word, and any notion of smart infrastructural planning is quickly buried under red tape and politics. A mass transit system for Tampa has been debated for decades, with not so much as a competent bus system to show for it, and as a result the city has clogged streets every day. The Sunshine Skyway bridge had to be hit by a boat and collapse before it was upgraded to adequate specifications. The light rail system proposed by the federal government (which offered to pay a significant portion of) for Tampa and other cities was shot down by Republican governor Rick $cott because the idea came from a Democratic administration and sounded too, you know, progressive. Starting to see the pattern here? Nothing will be done about the fact that Pinellas County is a giant spoon resting just barely on top of the Gulf of Mexico until it gets submerged by a hurricane or global warming (or, as the case may now be, a hurricane caused in part by global warming).

Every Bit true and MUCH MUCH more , when you have politicians who claim to want to help BUT first they need to build a parkway with their name on it before they run off to congress......sound familiar......Rhonda...shit for brains storms..........she was always taking credit for shit we did our selfs in south county NO matter how much HER & Hillsborough Co kept fucking us over.!!! 30yrs ago and as little as 15 Years ago we were going to Succeed from Hillsborough County and become our Own County everything South of the Alafia river would have been South County. We had all the Business in agreement back then and we had major Fish Farms, Cattle farms, Orange groves, Dairies, Pig farms etc down here and Hillls County scared them because alot of them were older and the County fed them a line of BS saying we will sue you and force you to loose your land.........they got so worried they paniced but in doing so alot sold land fast for WAY to cheap and thats when the housing SHIT Storm started here and has NOT stopped for over 20 years...........this once great area is now looking just like pinellas very fast!! In just 40 yrs we went from alot of dirt roads to a major Interstate 75 being built and opened and in doing so CUT alot of FARMS IN HALF and once they were some sold off part BC it was to hard to maintain them both or their kids didnt want to fight the county.....Now its nothing but Transplants and Trash and Nut case drivers who instead of reinventing them selfs when they moved here like alot of earlier people did they brought their Shitty habits with them and now Florida is looking like a huge Dumpster in some places So when one of those A holes claim they are on your side look at their hands if it looks like they haven't had a splinter in those hands EVER they are NOT FROM Florida OR care enough to put in the sweat for our State! I sat and watched them all RUN away when Irma came and Laughed as we sat on I-75.. 2 FHP Troopers Friends came up ......(they were keeping south bond road blocked) anyway I laughed watching them leave BC I knew Because of SO MUCH OVER BUILDING IF IRMA HIT and they were on roads up north they would be in Gods hands and NOT their own like it should be! PS as for Scott >>> I cant believe NO one put a bullet in his head

The problem is the builders, build homes with only wood and sheetrock, if they would build them with cement, cynder blocks or something stronger for that matter the homes would survive a lot more. The politicians need to do something about that. Homes in Tornado alleys should be built with underground shelters, hurricane prone states like Florida should be built with stronger materials and a category 5+ resistant walls just like the college dorms and other buildings.
@afh7689
@afh7689 7 жыл бұрын
NutNbutSpeed I live in Polk County, which is inland and also a fast-growing region of the state and I don't think I have ever seen a house built with wood framing for the walls. All new homes are built with concrete block walls or concrete slabs. Not sure what the building code requires for new homes, but a Florida room built on a family member's home in 2006 was built to withstand 115mph winds (this is about 30-40 miles inland). Coastal areas have much more stringent building codes.

@edfagan4251

As someone who lived in that area for two years I can assert without doubt that a major catastrophe is just a matter of time. The town wherein I lived had major flooding, bridges and roads covered by water, during what were locally considered to be 'minor' tropical storms. The significance that areas of town which had flooded twice in fifty years were now flooding three times in two years seemed to be lost on many locals. Many Floridians simply choose not to believe in climate change (which helped me sell my house there, but still...). Also the local republican governments permit new construction in low-lying areas which will be even more prone to flooding.

How would a Cat 5 hit Tampa? Due to its location an Atlantic hurricane would most likely make landfall on the opposite cost of Florida and weakean by time it reaches Tampa. Unless maybe it's a Pacific hurricane that hits Mexico, enters the gulf and then re-energizes to a cat 5?
@everettmadsen6244
@everettmadsen6244 7 жыл бұрын
Hurricanes commonly travel west through the caribbean then turn north and enter the Gulf of Mexico between Cuba and the Yucatan and circle back NE towards Florida's gulf coast. Hurricane Charley in 2004 came super close to nailing Tampa Bay with a direct hit as a strong category 4 with 150 mph sustained winds, 5 mph short of being classified a category 5 hurricane, only to turn inland at the last second and make landfall near Punta Gorda.

Mega Nox If you want to be Mr. Technical, you're wrong as well since it's technically 157 mph. But let's not be pedantic. Doesn't change my point tgat Charley was a strong cat 4 nearly a cat 5

We just had Hurricane Michael and it was 3 mph from Cat 5. It originated in the Gulf of Mexico. Look what happened to Mexico Beach city. Would be really massive in Tampa Bay Area.

I think it's funny how many people below that live in Tampa Bay act like they have been hit by every level of hurricane, that is bullshit unless they went through hurricane Donna in the 1960s. I have been in every level hurricane in my life in South Miami and the worst in my opinion was small but dangerous in hurricane Andrew. I am sorry but I seen how Floridians respond and run from hurricanes and the method normally used in travels from a hurricane is not accurate. Tampa Bay residents really are not prepared and it's scary. They are prepared for the best they can for their homes but not their lives. If a hurricane like Donna or Andrew hit here it indeed would be a major wake up call to many. Now grant in, nobody should be overly concerned of a tropical storm to cat 2. Concerns should start at a cat 3 to some degree. Cat 4 would for sure me dangerous and cat 5 or greater would be a wrath that nobody would be safe and alot of devastating effects will be happening. A cat 4 or 5 would be a strong wake up call to those being big and bad in their comments below.

That's really scary how many people around this area are not aware or do not feel as though a major hurricane would not be a threat but if we did get hit by a category 4 or 5 it would be absolutely catastrophic way beyond what people think. The storm surge could reach 15-20 feet above where many homes sit, I pray this doesn't happen Because if it did there would be a significant number of fatalities. They are almost completely avoidable and after Charley in 04, then Irma that's to false alarms which increases reluctancy to evacuate. They say number of deaths could be around 2,000 but honestly I would not be surprised if it were more like 5,000 or more deaths.

well the history of hurricanes in tampa is interesting... there's not really been any since the 1920s. It's been only tropical storms and stuff that's not too bad. It's in a good area actually.

Those homes On bolivar peninsula were very well Built and very well anchored... Also look up Holly beach Louisiana hurricane Rita
