I have the Sailor Fresca Blue in the 1911L and I am very fond of the pen color. I also have a Zoom nib and find it fun to use, although it isn't a daily use nib for me. Actually, I ended it with two Zoom nibs and plan to send one out for a custom grind someday. I've heard that the Zoom nib makes a great base for a reverse architect grind and other interesting grinds.

Oh, I really badly wanted the 1911L in the Fresca blue. The color just appeals to me a lot. But I couldn’t find it anywhere I looked (except eBay which I steer clear of). I still want it, though. I have the zoom nib in one of my six Sailor PGs. It is not a daily writer for me either. But gosh, the nib is a really versatile and sweet writer. I have many different Sailor nibs, including some of the pricey special nibs. I also like Sailor’s Music nib. I prefer the Zoom a little more. The zoom nib is especially suited to a custom grind of choice.

I wouldn't use the Zoom nib for regular writing. It's more a fun nib for me.

I know these colors can be tricky on digital screens, but I would categorize this as a robin’s egg blue. Very nice! 😄

It's darker than a robin's egg blue, but that is a very similar color!

I love Sailors. And the Fresca is really lovely. The 1911S is just smaller than I like. I much prefer the 1911L because of its somewhat larger all round size dimensions. And I like Sailor’s 21k nibs more than the 14k, though both are just great. I own many of Sailor’s specialty ‘exotic’ gold nibs. I own many Sailor pens, mainly but not solely due to the superb nibs. Just the one 1911S though, a beautiful yellow one with black ends. Sailor just slays! 👌

Sailors are well made pens, just not enough to make me interested in getting more. I use enough vintage pens that the smaller 1911S doen't bother me. And I really appreciate how Sailor experiments with nibs in a way most companies just aren't doing.

Interesting nib as you say. I bought a zoom nib from Osprey. Two pen companies I haven’t bought pens from yet are Sailor and Pelikan. I think I lean more towards Pelikan being a birdwatcher in my childhood. The Pelikan logo and cap clip design appeals to me more than Sailor.

Pelikan makes some beautiful pens. And I like the clip a lot! Sailor is a brand you buy for the nibs.

1. On the used market you can get older Sailor pens with STEEL zoom nibs for well under $100. I'm happy with mine. 2. The only other zoom I am aware of is the Good Blue L130, a totally different pen which I use more than my Sailor. 3. It's okay with me if you don't care for Sailors. I like them because they feel the most precise to me.

1. That's good to know. I'm not doing much buying right now, but I'll keep my eye open. 2. I had never heard of that pen. Interesting, and apparently designed with artists in mind? 3. Of the modern penmakers, I think I like Pilot the best. But they're like my Toyota Camry: quality pens, but not particuarly exciting.

It really is fun. If I were an artist, I think it would be my tool of choice!

I understand not liking certain things. A cheaper comparison is the LAMY Safari. There's those who swear by them, but I know several people who have had about the fail rate of the early Jinhao 992s in the nibs, around 20 percent had needed work from new. And then I dislike the basic design. Not just because of the triangular section. You just like what you like. Part of my "thing" about vintage Esterbrook pens is the writing experience so many options can provide. I really understand not using this regularly. Like the few flexible nibs I have, just occasionally fun to write with.

I'm not much a fan of the Safari either. I've had decent luck with them, and I respect what they're doing, but they're not for me. It is fun to try the different nibs on the Esterbrooks, though some are starting to get expensive.

@WaskiSquirrel Why you watch the pens. They tend to be the cheapest way to get nibs for an old Esterbrook, though you have to sort through hundreds of 1xxx and 2888s.😁
