Jerry Cantrell is so talented ❤️. He said this album ""Black Gives Way to Blue was his way of finally dealing with the loss of his friend Layne. ELTON JOHN actually plays piano on Black Gives Way to Blue song to honor Layne too.❤️

Beautiful song. ❤️. I love AIC. Iconic songs like Man in the Box, Rooster, Would. "" Black gives Way To Blue" is their first album since Jerrys dear friend singer Layne Staley died. .RIP Layne ❤️

I always thought it was about Layne honestly. The video to me showed a lot of "temptation". Everyone's partying, having a good time, getting into sinful things, lured by the women, as Layne and the band were to drugs and the rock and roll lifestyle. The band in the background watching everything unfold while looking so somber was very haunting, resembling how the rest of the band got off of the drugs, but Layne didn't, and they had to just sit and watch his inevitable end. Then at the end he is bound and branded, a slave to addiction and just another numbered statistic with a brief description. Male, lean, blonde, musician, also describing Layne. Everyone knew Layne wasn't going to stop heroin, Layne himself said he couldn't, and that it would kill him, he was very aware of it. Hence, "It might seem an afterthought, yes it hurts to know you're bought, it's your decision." As for the people downstairs eating the human organs, I assume it's a metaphor to how the drugs you were so tempted by literally consume you piece by piece until there is nothing left, while the demons that brought you there simply laugh at your expense and stupidity. Another day, another victim. That was my interpretation.

"Hurts to know you're bought" might also be referring to Mike Starr. At the time Starr was in the TV show Celebrity Rehab talking about AIC and Layne. Although the band was supportive of Starr trying to get better, they criticized the show.

It's about Layne and Mike

Layne once made the observation that he never intended (or planned?) to get addicted to heroin. This song I think is Jerry's rejoinder to that, in that "no one plans to take the path that brings you lower."

Bitter sweet sounds so good love Jerry Cantrell, but miss Layne Staley. This was after he died. Every time I heard this song, I was reminded of that. Amazing guitar solo, (wasn't expecting that) It's Jerry Cantrell. DUH RIP Layne your music lives on.

The songs referring to the loss of the original vocalist, Layne Staley. When the band formed Layne was the front man of the band during the period which out the band at the top of the music industry and Jerry Cantrell was the lead guitar. After Layne died, jerry took over the lead role...so many artists have written songs directly to Layne during his addiction, check out A Perfect Circle - The Outsider, its Maynard James Keanans plead to Layne during that time

They were actually co-leads, and Jerry was the lead on "Heaven Beside You" and "Over Now" on their last full album.

Jerry Cantrell is a great singer; you’re right in that he does have a haunting tone. That’s what the band was trying to do. This song is a tribute to the former lead singer Layne Staley who passed away from drug overdose. You should check out their early hits with Layne Staley like Man In the Box, Them Bones, Again, Would?, Down in a Hole, Bleed the Freak, Sea of Sorrow, Rooster.

At 0:49 the card says "YOUR DECISION" 1023 Corinthians Drive. This is referring to scripture: 1st Corinthians 10:23 "All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify." (NKJV).

Remember back in the 80's, we had the Tom Petty "Don't Come Around Here No More" video with all the crazy images of an Alice in Wonderland party, and they're cutting Alice up like a cake. This video just ripped the mask off the degeneracy of the obscenely wealthy, completely. Shame the video overshadows the song, which is one of their best. Good reaction. You know, I saw a video, might have even been TMZ, and they were asking the bassist of the Scorpions what's the craziest party he'd ever been to, and he said something about a snuff party. The interviewer was just left saying, "What!?!?" Speaking of mental health, do "Check My Brain, " off the same lp.
