Hello, the little clear glass object you picked up (about 8:30) is a bird feeder that fits into the side of a metal bird cage. :)
@Jane_Dow Жыл бұрын
Jos. Thats a glass bird feeder for your parakeet's cage. You have it laying on its back. The hole goes to the top ( to match the hole in the cage ), an that foot part twist between the bars to hold it in place.

Just learned this trick when looking for milk glass. Hold it up to the light. If it becomes translucent, leave it. The more opaic, the better and usually older. For seasonal tablescapes, lay an appropriate color runner. Place an assortment of milk glass, high and low. Fill each with a single type of flower, ornaments, cones, greens, etc. The deconstructed arrangement brings importance to the individuals used. The Whiting and Davis bag is from the 70s. The company also made a few pieces of mesh clothes during this time.

Yes! I love filling my milk glass bowls with vintage Christmas ornaments. It looks so festive.
@davidwhitten2097 Жыл бұрын
danielclaeys7598 Sorry but that isn't quite true. It depends on the maker, pattern, minor variations in the glass formula that day, and there is no hard and fast rule that can be followed. Such as, the more recent white milk glass from Hazel Atlas, Indiana Glass and Anchor Hocking, yes much of it can be more translucent (especially a lot of the cheaper mass-produced florist ware) BUT also quite a lot of the older milk glass can be also. I have a creamer with a hand-applied handle, circa late 1870s, that is translucent. Same with some Atterbury & Co milk glass from the 1880s-90s. And yes some older glass is "dead white", so you can't see a thing when holding up to the light. But so is some quite new glass.
@danielclaeys7598 Жыл бұрын
@@davidwhitten2097 You sound like you know a lot about milk glass, a rabbit hole that I don't know much about. I want to ask you a question about it as I have some and I have trouble moving it. Just because a piece is old, does that make it valuable? I can see the difference between a Westmoreland and a Jeanette, but is it still apples to apples in value or does age play into it?
@davidwhitten2097 Жыл бұрын
@@danielclaeys7598 Well to be honest, I probably know enough just to be dangerous!!! But the field of milk glass is VERY wide and covers a lot of ground, dozens of glassmakers over the past 150+ years made it. There are no hard and fast rules, it is a complicated field that even longtime glass collectors and dealers have trouble with. No one person can know it all. Older milk glass pieces can be worth more if the pattern has a known name, and the pattern is illustrated and can be identified in reference books. And there are lots of glass reference books out there, but no one has the time and money to get and read them all. Westmoreland, Fenton, Imperial, Fostoria, and others are known for "better" milk glass from the 20th century. Older firms (late 1800s) were Atterbury & Co; Challinor Taylor & Co, Consolidated Glass & Lamp Co, and several others. I think the problem right now is that a lot of the more recent milk glass is so plentiful and there aren't as many collectors competing for it now, as, say, 20 or 30 years ago, so it might not sell as fast in the current market. The bay is saturated with some of the more common patterns. The best advice I've heard is Collect what you really love! Then it won't matter as much if you try to resell it.

That particular Hutschenreuther mark [who chain roy tear (like in tear apart)] with the name Lorenz above it was only used from 1968-1970. Lorenz was the eldest son of the founder of the original Hutschenreuther company in Hohenberg (founded in 1814). In 1857, after a dispute, Lorenz founded his own company in Selb (all places located in Franconia in Northern Bavaria where the natural resources for making porcelain were available). The two Hutschenreuther companies finally merged in 1969. They went out of business in 1998. The trademark Hutschenreuter was sold to Rosenthal [rose an tall].

Hi. The Buffalo Pottery plates you looked at at 16:20 are from the DELDARE line, made c.1908 and are collectible. Deldare ware is the most famous pottery made by Buffalo. They can sell quite well.
@marciawerner6891 Жыл бұрын
Yes! My relatives worked there and we had a cabinet filled with it. Later on Buffalo Pottery became Buffalo China and specialized in restaurant ware. Deldare pieces tend to look almost like new because they were mainly for display. Larkin co. used them as premiums for soap purchases.
