I used to object to pink, but then I realized if it’s greyed down it works as a neutral, and I started seeing it in oriental rugs, paintings, chair upholstery on vintage pieces...So I think a hit of it works, especially with forest green and tan and browns.

I don’t know how you can entirely dislike a color, since there are so many shades and hues within each color family. I don’t really like yellow usually, but when paired with certain other colors, or if it’s an ochre/mustard color, it can look great. In the same way, pink and purple may not be a person’s favorite on their own, but they can always look good when properly contextualized. Also, purple can be anything from deep eggplants, to rich royal purples, to light lavenders and muted mauves. And pink can be loud fuchsias and bubblegum pinks, but it can also be a lot more subtle and muted, and go well with greens and teals. A nice teal with a light pink looks great. I think combining colors you wouldn’t normally like with ones you do in interesting ways can completely change the feel of the color and how it is perceived. I don’t love pink either, but I found home decor I love with pink in it, and it made me willing to incorporate it into my space. Having a touch of a color I wouldn’t normally choose with the colors I already love adds some nice variety and makes the space feel a lot more fun and less one-note.

Also I feel like a desk, even a very table-esque desk, is losing room for your legs and chair to move under it when you sit there, so when they have diagonal legs it just doesn’t make sense to me. Diagonal legs look right on some wooden stools, end tables, and maybe under a TV stand (sounds very retro) as Paige said. But a desk can still look very light, airy, and mid century with tapered legs that are straight up and down, and I prefer that style in a lot of instances.
@ohffsreally
@ohffsreally Жыл бұрын
I think that's exactly it. It has just been done too many times on "cheap" stuff. Also, most diagonal legs are not a straight shape... they are usually more like an oval, growing thinner towards the bottom and/or top. I personally like sharp edges/corners more, so that could also be a factor
@emilyhitz7182

Exactly. From about 2005-2015 midcentury was THE style trend, diagonal legs reigned and it felt fresh and cool. Like any trend, it become overdone, mass produced, and now feels cheap.

Pink’s another warm color option. Some shades are actually a very light brown, and they look good with dark browns (e.g. chocolate) as a result. Depending on your wood tone, then, you may want one of those pinks to stay in the same color family but go light. You can go with aqua or teal if you want to contrast, pink if you want to blend. Really all depends on what effect you want to produce.

My personal feelings regarding diagonal legs: For my 18th birthday, my dad and I drove to Denmark to find a nice desk since I was about to move to my very first own place (I live near the Danish border). I ended up getting a sleek, midcentury-looking desk with diagonal legs (!), which imo give the the entire furniture piece a really interesting silhouette. Also the legs are rather thin and having them at and angle actually makes the desk feel very stable, I can't really explain it properly.

Pink is a spring color - like lemon yellow and sky blue. Spring colors can be uplifting /hopeful. Some don’t like pink because it’s also associated w/“ traditional” feminine attributes like nurturing, vulnerability, innocence (or naivety) and softness (which some see as weakness).

The honesty you expressed at 12:12 -13:09 has been on my mind for a while. Your channel is a favorite of mine because it's realistic and attainable. Your condo looks very similar to mine, and you managed to create a truly striking place that looks and feels like home. Even those who consider themselves "successful" don't have money or time that's shown on other KZbin channels, and on Instagram. I support those channels because I want to continue supporting individuals whose growth I've been privileged to witness. Then again, if I had the time and money, I would do exactly the same. Those are rattan chairs from the 60s or so. Pretzel design, and worth a small fortune if restored. I have a similar pair that I pulled out of the barn after a decade just last month. I cleaned well and saturated with linseed oil, then had cushions made out of black velvet. Looks very classic with the natural rattan. Even the upholsterer was surprised how beautiful they look. That keeps them from being coastal and they fit right in my style mixed den. Such comfy chairs to sink down in with the proper sized cushions. Quality is very high for these chairs to have been abused over the decades by me and still not be rickety at all! They will be a forever favorite. 🤩

@whiteserpent6753
@whiteserpent6753 Жыл бұрын
Well… rugs are dirt cheap when we’re trading with Iran. When we aren’t, rugs are less available and pretty expensive. But it also depends what you’re looking for. You have to want the riot of color that a Persian rug will bring you- if you do, you actually can still buy some of them pretty cheap (read large, wool, costs less than new artificial fibers)- something from the ‘60s or earlier, really bright color, not super high knot count, might have some heavy wear. Odd sizes run less than common ones, on average, because there are fewer houses that can accommodate them. A modern rug with high knot count out of a city- that’ll be hard with current trade restrictions, and you’ll pay for it. If you want plainer (e.g. moroccan)- plainer is trendy, so it costs more, and you’re buying from places that tend to have lower rug production. You can probably find vintage Karastan (and some of these are nice) on offer up or craigslist or whatnot. Chinese, Indian, and Pakistani rugs essentially have no value on resale- don’t let anyone charge you as if they do. You can sometimes find really nice ones in thrift stores.

Here are some arguments for pink and angle legs… let’s go. I have started to like pink as an act of rebellion against a society that taught me to hate all things “girly”. So while pink and purple will never be my favs, I can now appreciate them in new ways. Plus pink can complement so many shades that I tend to like. For the legs, they’re sturdier when at an angle. Also, so much of (modern) homes have 90 degree angles, that this tilt can be something different.

why I like pink/rose and you should too: adds a balanced warmth to a space without being too much like a red might be. can be quite neutral between warm and cool tones. plus there are so many 'pink' shades ranging from pale 'red' to magenta.

I have a total aversion to USM Haller furniture. I went to high school in Switzerland and all my friends' parents (if they were what one would call something like upper middle class) had this very similar style in their homes that all ended up looking very similar. All very white box type houses, white walls on both the inside and outside of the house, and very specific mixture of furniture. And all of them, without exception featured at least one USM piece because it's simple, practical and customizable *but* also because it's a choice that shows that you're well off. It's a Swiss manufacturer so it's like a code among Swiss people indicating some sort of no-nonsense "good" taste.

*color and style* . Red is a color I would typically give a hard pass on. However, I was struggling a bit on my fall re-fresh palette. I found three lumbar pillows with a paisley print for $3. I pulled items with similar colors for a complete Autumn look and nothing is kitsch. I have been on the hunt for an authentic oil landscape art piece for years. I scored on today at the thrift store for $13. She's not huge, but she's damn pretty and I admire her. It definitely takes time to curate a space. For me, I value my thrifted treasures and staple items because the tell my story and reflect my vibe. I also don’t like diagonal legs. Somehow makes it look cheap and dated to me, but I really don’t know why. Pink on the other hand is a great color! I think it goes with so many other colors that it can act almost as a neutral, depending on the shade.

The first lounge chairs would look lovely in a burnt orange to contrast with the teal walls (assuming they already own the chairs, the photo was taken in their own home, and were only asking for upholstery advice). The colourful mirror frames with the bubble design is so cute! Agree on the mushroom lamps. The one your friend bought is definitely on my wishlist. Congrats on the 100K! 🎉

So I like diagonal legs, but only if they’re authentic vintage. Diagonal legs are very common on 1960s ercol furniture (a british furniture company), it’s almost one of their trademarks. Pink I can like in the right spaces, mixed with green sometimes I think it looks nice. Have you seen Farrow and Balls colour setting plaster? 🤔

That first chair is cool, but it deadass looks like a pretzel.... xD I'd lean into it and pick a beige linen fabric and draw little irregular white dots on it to represent the salt. Then they would be some cool ass pretzel chairs.

Oh my god I jumped when I saw the USM haller in your thumbnail. Swiss quality at its finest, extremely heavy and completely customisable. I bought a new one in March and I have pictures of it saved on my phone so I can look at it every now and then. Haha! Best purchase ever made and an architect’s favourite

Hey Paige! Love your videos 😊 would you share with us your story, how you started in prep styling and design and maybe general tips on how to start in this field? Also I resently saw an article in AD about what the job as designer actually looks like on a daily. Maybe you could give a little view of your day-to-day job reality. This would be very interesting 😊 have a great day!

I have that little green ikea lamp since my teenage years… it has a little crack and collects dust a little to quick for my cleaning habits… but for some reason I just truly love it… However I can’t believe that they’re going for that price nowadays..

Love this series! Also agree, I don’t like pink either. Never been my fave. A few years ago I fell into the trend of painting my room that trendy pink (pretty much the exact color you showed lol), and I hated it. Ended up painting it a greige color and I sleep much better at night haha

I love your videos Paige! Have to give an anecdotal about rugs though after hearing your advice here. I bought a vintage, or second hand rug from Marketplace once, looked so great, so clean, I brought it home and rented a full size carpet cleaning machine, it was the blackest blackest black water x3 passes over this thing and then some. Carpet fibers hold onto everythinngggg and you never know if people wore shoes in their home, had pets, etc, etc so I highly recommend buying only new rugs. Used patterned rugs are hard to gauge if they're clean or dirty as the pattern just gets uniformly darker. Perigold and Pottery Barn, Floyd, West Elm etc. Were my best luck for rugs.

Dirt is a fact of life, and if everything bought everything new we would have even more waste in our landfills than we already do. I buy used rugs, get them washed yearly, and enjoy the authentic vintage beauty. (If you have severe allergies it might be a bit different.)

The red sofa reminded me of something. I used to have an ikea couch that had plain canvas slipcovers. Winter was coming, so my husband and I decided to buy red corduroy covers, just to warm up the place. As soon as I put them on I was appalled. I can't tell you how much I hated them. I almost started crying. Part of it was my regret over buying the slipcovers. I immediately took the red covers off and hid them. Later we gave the sofa to my sister-in-law, along w both sets of covers...so maybe she got some use out of them.

Pink. Well, pink walls are kind to the complexion. I'd avoid Pepto Bismol pink but once I did have our bedroom painted a calm pink and it worked; at the time, it was fashionable too. But pink textiles, etc.: too Barbie!

I like the bamboo chairs I don’t like the folding chairs. I don’t like the exposed piping sink. I don’t mind the red sofa, but it needs the right room to live in. I don’t care for the butcher block table, but I don’t hate it. I don’t like the leather sofa. It looks like it’s really uncomfortable. I like the color though. I like the “black” walls/white trim better than the white walls/black trim. I like the clownfish lamps, but I would change the lampshades. I like the rush seat chairs, but they don’t seem comfortable. I don’t mind the IKEA acrylic chairs but they’re not a wow. I like the Danish table. I like pink, but I don’t like weak pinks. I think pink really needs to be paired with other colors to work. It has to be the right pink, and it has to go with other colors that make the pink feel more special. A vibrant cerise-magenta with olive green, mustard yellow, ochre, and an indigo-teal? Chef’s kiss. All-pink just isn’t it. I don’t like the Haller storage. I like the Home Depot William Morris wallpaper. Don’t like the wicker mirror. I like the other mirror in the mustard color. I like the drawing table, and I would use it as a drawing table. I like the Danish dining chairs. I don’t like the blue rug at all. I’m not crazy about the Flowerpot lamp. I’m okay with the IKEA table set, but it seems impractical. I don’t like the Spokane desk with the diagonal legs, but not because of the legs. I like the vintage IKEA lamps, and I like the intense color I don’t like the low coffee table. I don’t like the tissue box holder, but it’s such a small commitment, I say go for it. I like the olive green cabinets.
