TypicaL 40k watt waste oil burners use about 4 liters of waste per
hour I have built units that use up to 2 gallons per hour or about
145,000 watts I use oil burners for many things mostly for burning
tree stumps out of the ground, waste oil burners work great for
forges or smelting metal. Ive built many types of waste oil burners
from syphon nozzle waste oil burners to drip feed to vaporizer
coil waste oil burners . these also can be used to build a furnace
and heat very large areas . the most efficiant waste oil burner
i have biult is a siphon nozzle
atomizer and it uses about 4 liters of waste oil per hour .
do not burn transmission oil it is toxic .Oil Burner Designs
Drip Style
Low Tech. No atomization.
Natural Draft possible (no electricity)
Mother Earth News’ design is widely used. Designed in 1970’s.
Today’s motor oil has additives that resist degradation and allow engines to run
at higher temperatures. In effect, waste oils are now much harder to burn cleanly
and likely require preheating and atomization.
Conventional fuel oil burners
Modest efficiency improvements over time - although overall burner design hasn’t
changed much
As homeowners upgrade to modern heat pumps, these old style burners are
ubiquitous in scrapyards and can be purchased for very little cost.
Most can be operated without modification with up to 20% biodiesel. (B20)
Predictable issues with higher ratios of biofuels - ‘gelling’ and damage to rubber
seals. Commercial biofuel safe pumps and preheaters available.
Very convenient, tight design.
Siphon Nozzle
Requires high capacity air compressors
LP can be used in lieu of air
Fuel pumps not required
Preheating for reliable viscosity
“Constant level device” to maintain consistent fuel flow
Simple DIY nozzles can be made from off the shelf hardware
Manufactured nozzles available for retrofitting gun style burners for Waste Oils
Babington Style
Fuel flows OVER nozzle, rather than through nozzle
Imagine fine mist from a whale’s blowhole
Filtration matches your pump - not your nozzle
Requires sump and pump
Same preheating issues with alternative fuels DISCLAIMER: In this video description contains affiliate links, which means

Well Nobox 7 I am a believer, it work Just completed mine with water luckily as you suggested and Got a nice bath in the process because as I tuned the fuel line I left it unsoldered at the back where the fuel should enter,so the air blew it out and back fed into the water bottle. Once that was fixed that was it. Just as you said the optimal place for the fuel line is flush with the face of the cap.

I have been working on using oil to heat my shop for a few years now , and I can say with an reasonable amount of certainty that you would have to have one hell of an heater to need that much oil at any time . All of my designs use tiny amounts of oil although I have thought about using air several times but then there is the added cost of running the air compressor

Hello, after trying to burn the oil as if it were wood , I had little luck as the wood stove could be run at low temps/oil consumption but if I tried to turn t up much , then there would be an runaway extremely fast. It seemed that with all of the designs that I found for this style of furnace on you tube, they were just interested in burning the oil not using it as an fuel source. I finally found that if I ran it with zero fire box pressure but still with plenty of draft then the thing would run just fine. I'm sure that auto trans fluid would burn the same as cooking oil as they are both about the same viscosity . I'm running my furnace with about two drops an second fuel flow but my shop is real small. I have no fans on the fire box or and injector pressure on my inlet line gravity feed . also, I am using charcoal to aid in starting my burner as it will get up to temp pretty fast and then the oil will take over from there I hope this can help you

Gosh you are down to earth just like so many of us. Many of us are just trying to make things happen with the stuff that we have, I happen to have the ability to get waste oil from a used car lot. That is my way of coming up with waste oil. So the waste oil is free but how do I get this up to burn efficiently, is what I'm thinking. Being able to watch your content is absolutely priceless, I assume you will be selling this particular item on eBay of which I have seen many of your other items on eBay for sale, thank you for selling. Sometimes it's just easier to buy it than spending the time to make it myself

I've done all these types of atomization tests some years ago cooperating with other experimenters on Yahoo groups wastewatts, Babington burners, and siphon nozzels. Now days you don't have to fabricate your own nozzles as you can buy a siphon nozzle for around $40 that is designed for waste oil burners! We never went to 75lbs pressure, usually 14lbs on heated oil or just siphon and maybe 20lbs on preheated air. Burns real clean!

It is an airbrush system. It will only be good if you adjust the intake, either of oil, or air. I think you can use a paint gun, along with an air compressor, obviously. Perhaps, a refrigerator compressor would do. Thanks for the idea.

NOBOX7 yup! That was my job when working on huge oil refinery furnaces! If you could get it to spin your efficiency would sky rocket! I would adjust the nozzels and get that perfect spin. The engineers freaked out because they had never seen such good performance when I was adjusting they came out to check their instruments to see if they were working right. It has to be perfect though. Adjustable jets are needed.😉 But hey you did a fine job brother!

It's the pieto or pietol effect that draws fuel through via a stream of passing gas creating a low pressure zone to cause the draw. The venturi effect is where a narrowing of an opening causes pressure to be converted into velocity. Yes I see from your drawing that your jet is a combination of the two effects.

You have obviously put a lot into this. The question I have is, how much electricity (or how little) does this require when operating? I would need something that puts out much less heat, and I see that you can turn down the oil feed, but how low can the air pressure go? Electricity is expensive and air compressors use lots of it.

He makes a mini version of that snail shaped burner, and I'm getting one-pretty sure you can run it off a commercial HD air pump like they use in hydroponics, I'm going to test it. Those only use 30-60 Watts depending on size, see the *Boysal Burner* on YT for an example, that's the best design I've seen that doesn't require an air compressor.

@easymac79

I built one of these nozzles tonight and was able to substantially simplify the build. Parts list written verbatim as it appears on my receipt: 1/4" FIP brass cap 1/4" MIP x 2" Nipple Brass 1/4" x 1/4" x 1/4" FIP Tee Brass Two 1/8" barb x 1/4" MIP Adapter Brass [might want to use a larger size for the oil, depending on viscosity and output requirements.] 1/4OD x .170 ID vinyl tube [the 1/4" OD tubing fits tightly on the 1/8" barb. you can test your chosen diameters at the home improvement store with the displays] On hand 1/4" Copper Tubing x ~4" The assembly is pretty much as you outline, except that you solder the copper tube to the 1/8" barb fitting, omit the elbow, and use another 1/8" barb on the bottom side of the tee. The copper tube replaces the specialty brass tube and omits the need for the reducer fitting. The assembly is highly adjustable from three connection points to get the orifice just right. The oversized copper tube caused no issues during testing, it draws a venturi just fine. It is aided with gravity, but it will eventually prime even above the reservoir. I used no teflon tape and soldered no joints (aside from the copper tube). It worked just fine testing with water; no leaks. I plan to add jam nuts to the connections to keep adjustability depending on what oil I'm using at the time. I was absolutely BLOWN away by how well this came together with my limited machining skills. I didn't even have the right size drill bit and was wallering out the hole in the cap until the tube fit through. The atomization was INCREDIBLE! I pulled the cord off my bench AC compressor and don't remember how it was wired, I couldn't get it to start, so I used a regular air compressor for testing, began at 90 PSI and it was about 60 when my bucket fell off the stool I stopped the test. There was no noticable drop in atomization. A little sputtering though, I think that was liquid delivery issue. Higher head or a larger hose should resolve this.
@NOBOX7
@NOBOX7 2 жыл бұрын
The sputtering was caused by your lack of Teflon tape
@easymac79

@@NOBOX7 Interesting. The connections seemed to be air tight, but I did a water dunk test and found leaks everywhere. I wrapped all connections in teflon tape and proceeded. I found your video on AC compressor wiring - got that running! Many thanks for that vid. Sputtering was still a problem, but this time it was clearly an airflow problem. I wanted to see what this burner could do so I hooked up my air compressor and set the hose at 60PSI. If there was sputtering, it's not apparent! I just published a test video. watch?v=wDVTvXDllks I will be ordering those craft metal tubes as this is honestly WAY too much power and fuel. I'd need a bigger compressor to make much use out of it.

O melhor video sobre queimadores de óleo, autor demonstra do inicio ao fim a construção do queimador e no final mostra o funcionamento, assim deveriam ser os videos do you tube, didaticos servindo p´ra alguma coisa.

Get a oil nozzle ( Boiler)G P H no 6 or heaver... angle of spray at 100 psi.. waist oil will need filtering and pre heating..i would think.

Awesome concept for waste oil or diesel or kerosene atomization. Curious though why you (later video) used it with a relatively inefficient 90 degree air horn. Curious if this design could be used with something more like a propane Venturi burner (like the steel forging guys use) but using this nozzle in the place of the straight propane nozzle... also of note, common propane is only pressurized around 8psi, yet that is enough to draw in sufficient oxygen in a propane Venturi burner, curious how low of compressor psi your siphon design can function on. Also I’m very curious how large of a compressor is needed to supply the flow requirements of this design. I’ll likely build my own to mirror your siphon setup, but I will try using a propane style Venturi burner to house it in and see what I can get. I just purchased the 2mm brass tubing for the oil (I will start off with a 50/50 mix of waste motor oil and diesel) and see if this can generate enough heat (inside of a forge) to reach forge welding of steel temperature. Worst case I might need to make 2 burners, just hoping my little 5hp compressor (and 80 gallons of tank capacity) can keep up

If you examine the chronology of it all you will see that it was development process , nothing better at the time was on youtube , i had to roll up my sleeves and do it myself , it took months of tinkering . this is all old news , i dont use this design any more

@@NOBOX7 yeah I just stumbled into this video haha, gonna take me a few days to watch all of them. Just watched the 8 minute iron melt, that burner design looks pretty darn efficient with the air preheat chamber that is kinda coffin shaped... maybe I’ll replicate that setup. Thanks for the reply, I’ll be watching a bunch more of your burner stuff for sure!

Ace Hardware usually has a K&S stand for the small copper/brass tubing, shouldn't be that difficult to find anymore.

The burner I saw operating had a copper coil in the flame, then dripped the heated oil onto a red-hot plate, where the flame was held. Gravity feed of the oil.

@@Joe-by8jh Not for waste oil. Maybe for diesel or kerosene. It would possibly work for waste oil if it was preheated over 180f.

Thanks for the video man, it was informative. I accept that you aren't a professional videographer, and am not going to make snide comments about it being shakey. (sorry seeing that repeatedly in the comments annoys me for you). I have a question, and did not see it asked, in this configuration, roughly how much oil does this consume per hour? I'm looking at a home foundry, and doing research on the delivery methods, and this looks amazingly promising, but I'm also seeing guys melting iron at a gallon per hour flow rate, and even atomized I'm guessing you are running much more than that. This looks like it would open a gateway to the nine hells when it gets burning.

I'm not very familiar with this since I'm in southern California but most automotive engine crankshaft and cam bearings contain cobalt, chrome, lead, and manganese so if we were to atomize and burn the waste oil from those engines wouldn't we be potentially putting lead hexavalent chrome and cobalt vapors and particulates into the space we're trying to heat?
