I finally found my eclectic water tank on the side of the road yesterday and I can't wait to start on my heater tomorrow.

I built a waste oil heater in 1980-81 that I believe is better that the ones I am finding on you tube. I got the idea from Mother Earth News. I also used a electric water heater tank for the body. The burner assembly was made from two 8 inch diameter iron skillets one inverted over the other separated by standoffs . the top skillet had multiple holes drilled through it with broken pieces of fire brick under it in the other skillet. The oil feed dropped from the top and fell through a six inch pipe that had the exit about 1 1/2 inches over the top skillet. It was rated at about 120,000 BTU. worked great. no liquid was burned. Only gas as it vaporized falling down the center tunnel.

I use oil drip and wood in my garage.Works awesome. I have 2 valves one on/off and one to adjust flow
@paulmackilligin1754
@paulmackilligin1754 5 жыл бұрын
If you have two valves in line, you can leave your adjustment valve - your needle valve or whatever - set to whatever setting was working last time, and turn the whole flow on and off with the other valve. That way you don't have to go through that adjustment palava each time. Just turn it on and go. If you do need a 'slow rate' and a 'fast rate' you can also set that up with two needle valves and two shut-off valves, but my guess is you don't even need that.

I made a oil burner with a smaller water heater,the only thing I did different, was to add a quart of kerosene to a five gallon bucket, it thins out the oil, and it’s light it easier.

8:28 Yep..! That's the exact reason why I run needle valves only for all of my burner projects. Heard a lot of people say a 1/4" ball valve will do...NOPE..not going to happen. On my burner for my forge, I can run all kind of fuel, gas or liquid. If it can flow, it can burn. BUT there is one thing to keep in mind..you got to filter your oil and/or install a filter before the needle valve. If you fail to do so, you'll have nothing but trouble with that damned thing.

My plan also. The boiler will be in the shed, piped hot water to a large 800-1000 gallon tank in the basement for house heat (we have radiant baseboard heaters) and pre-heat for the electric water heater. I expect the water heater to never come on...and will install a water temperature mixer to bring it down to 120f.

I'd wrp that tank with thin sheet metal and use a squirrel cage fan blowing into it making a forced air system so you can blow the hot air where you need it. Maybe into ductwork and heat a house with it.

How does the blower get any air all encapsulated in the insulation ? Seems like it will get hot and burn the motor out.
@BYprospector
@BYprospector 8 жыл бұрын
Ivan Bentley Claymore I make sure there is plenty of room for air flow and there is a piece of cardboard between the insulation and the blower that keeps the insulation from getting sucked in.

Why not put 2 valves on it? A valve that you can adjust permanently and the second closest to the heater you can use to for shutting heater off? When you want to start it you can just open on and off valve so that waste oil drip stays the same mostly. Also can a second door be added above clean out door that has a glass to watch the fire giving it the illusion of a fire place? Also would it be feasible to use a solar powered fan for the forced air? And if you put a 55 gal drum on a stand just out side of the building on an elevated rack and pipe in oil to a, say 2 or 3 gal container, ( to catch trash and etc. before draining into main container), that could be connected to another 5 gal container slightly below it that actually feeds the fire and it would all work on gravity and to maintain a cleaner area around stove. Your could then fill drum as you received the oil. if you were able to get a lot of waste oil you could then connect more drums where you kept in good supply in case of power outages. Please some one let me know if these things could work because I am collecting materials to build a waste oil heater and would like to make as many mistakes as possible to prevent unnecessary damage to my wallet !!! It couldn't take much!!! Thank You !!!!

moe roy I had a gas furnace that worked at night and when I wasn't in the shop. I only run my waste oil heater when I'm able to keep an eye on it. But it kept the shop quite nice. It would get hotter then my inferred gun could measure 600 plus F I think. Glowed red on the side at times.

@BYprospector
@BYprospector 9 жыл бұрын
If you don't want a blower you'll need to build one of "Mother Earth News" waste oil heaters. In order for the oil to burn clean it require a large amount of combustion air.
