Wasted Money? New Starter Installed. Bad Battery Maybe?

The car has been a little hard to start the last few races, well not really hard to start but slower turning over. So we picked up a new starter, Powermaster Ultra High Speed. Let's do a back to back test and see how it works out! The new one seems to be spinning a little faster, and for sure pulls less power but I was hoping it would turn over super fast. Am I dealing with a bad battery? Let me know what ya'll think.

Make sure your wire going to the starter is rated for the high amps!!!! Wire size is critical especially cranking for extended periods.

Meziere , has a great video on this subject…. I was having the same issue. I bought a starter cable kit from bickle race cars, which was a number 4 gauge never even gave it a second thought . After adding a 16 V battery, it did not speed the starter up much at all. After watching the video and doing the test explained I was dropping around 4 V so I up the wire size as they recommend to. 0/1 ott wire, HUGE difference in cranking speed much better now….

Definitely do a voltage drop test on it all. And wire gauge makes a huge difference.

Sounds the exact same through video, I only use welding lead for starter and grounds. The size of the wire inside the cable is important. If it has fewer but larger diameter strands then it is NOT going to be as good as more plentiful smaller strands. Electrical current rides on the outside of each individual wire strand NOT through the wire. The price you pay is definitely reflective of the quality you get. Cable should be easy to bend and very soft/flexible. If the cable is stiff then its probably not very good quality. Material and strand count is the only thing that matters. Use the largest cable you can. Not sure that a 16v Battery should drop that much? Even down to 12 seems a little much but I could be wrong on that part.

It's not unusual for the voltage to drop around 8 or 9 during the first cranks...but those extra two volts with the new one will make a big difference to your ignition system. I'd call that an upgrade.

I had this issue on my car with a trunk mounted battery. Ran a grounding cable directly from my battery to a starter bolt and the thing sounded like a brushless rc car. Redid my grounds away from chassis and the thing starts first rotation hot or cold in the staging lanes every time. Worth noting Datsuns are notorious poor chassis grounds so most of my electronics already had a direct path or cable path to battery. My engine straps were through the chassis however.

If your battery is lithium. The colder the Temps the less amperage it will produce. To check, take the battery in side for 24 hrs. Then check voltage on crank also cranking rpm. This is what I was told by the mfg. I run 2/0 welding leads for both hot and ground. I also use no-oxide on all terminations.

If you really think there's an issue you need to do voltage drop testing on the power and grounds at every connection point that is starter related. *Do this while the starter is spinning* Don't forget to voltage drop test the kill switch with the starter spinning. Some have been known to be horrible. I am nobody from nowhere. Hope you have a great next racing season 👍

We use a Tilton 40000 Series Super Starter with an XS Power 16V racing battery. It spins over our sled pulling engine like its nothing. Voltage usually only drops from 18v-16v fresh off the charger. The engine is a 485 BBC with enough compression to run diesel fuel 😁, and has both a 4stg dry sump pump, a separate vacuum pump, and the ignition timing is locked out at full advance without Start Ret. Although they are pricey, they are well worth it. We have tried many others and nothing compares to the Tiltons.

Lithium battery should not drop that low in voltage, there’s a bad cell in it. It should run 14.8 after the surface charge is gone, and if you ever see 12.8 that’s the end of the line before its about to not charge again. They don’t follow ohms law in this case like a lead acid battery that sacrifices voltage for current. Lithium batteries hold their voltage and amperage increases on demand. Math comes from standard cells at 4.2vdc, 3.7vdc running, 3.4 shutoff. Your battery should have 16 cells in it, 4 groups of 4 in parallel, in series. For reference, take an 18v drill battery and run it down til it’s dead and won’t power the tool anymore and put a meter on it, it’ll still read 18v
