Wat Phu in southern Laos

Wat Phu is a ruined Hindu temple complex located 30km away from Pakse city in the south of Laos.
It is an impressive Khmer Architect outside of Cambodia.
History suggested that it was built from the late 10th to early 11th centuries and if that's true then it's older than Angkor Watt in Siem Reap.
This ancient monument is one of the three UNESCO protected properties in Laos, the other two are Luang Prabang World Heritage Town and the Plain of Jar in in Xieng Kwang Province.
Wat Phu is the main attraction in Champasak Province, if you come to Pakse this is one of the many thing you should visit. And the best way to get there is by motorbike.

Hi folks, NatNomad here. An ex-Buddhist monk from Laos with a big dream of seeing the world. Throughout my time for over 10 years being a monk I kept asking myself one question "What life is like out there beyond the monastery?" and because of this question alone made me take a big step in 2014 when I finally say goodbye to my wonderful monastic life.
And now I'm doing what I've always wanted to do. Though I am not quite sure if I can say that I'm living my dream but you know what I'm loving my new adventure.

Yes, Lao, thailand, cambodia was once part of the khmer empire. Most of us still have the khmer blood in us.

The architectural characteristic and structural materials that they used to build this monument ,as well as the dimension of this temple itself, are just so similar to Preah Vihear temple which is located not far away from here. This is fascinating! Do you know any other Khmer temple in Laos that you can show us?

There are many Lao people who speak Khmer perfectly, especially those who live near the border with Cambodia.

Did you have to walk several miles to reach the temple buildings after you parked your motor bike? You sped up the video of that portion so I suspect you were walking. The Wat Phu site is supposedly also connected to one of the first kings of Champa or Linyi, Badravarman I to reigned in the 5th century. The present stone struictures there are much younger by over seven centuries. I am a Champa researcher, having completed my geography M.A. thesis in 1972 the recnstructed the economy of ancient Champa. Remnants of the long past connection with Champa would be buried if they exist.

The walking part was only 15 minutes, you can hire shuttle taxi, and cost 20,000 Kip or $2 where they drop you off and take you back to the car park. Well, looks like I've learned something from you regarding to Champa kingdom. I used to study at high school way back then.

I suspect the oldest features are on the upper levels. I see more Hindu features there. The water collected in the cave would have been conducted into that stone enclosure and perhaps used to annoint a linga nearby. I have some French archaeology articles about Wat Phu. Thank you for trudging up those long stone stairs. I am nearly 81 and just walking that long path on the level ground from where you parked your motorbide would be difficult for me. Even if it killed me I would be appropriate to spend my last moments in such a peaceful and meaingful place--except for the mosquitos.

It's one of my favorite places in Laos, very peaceful and just looking down to the temple and the surrounding area from the upper level is very fascinating, and I'm amazed how similar the site itself compared to the Angkor Watt in Siem Reap, you know that large pond right in front of the temple complex.
